anyone that needs a good love story
This is a good book to read in July. It creates a humidity and a longing in the reader that lingers awhile after putting the text down. I finished this book in a hurry because I had to return it to the library in a matter minutes, and so the last few pages (which were Oliver's words to his beloved) I rushed through with probably a similar breathless excitement that Constance may have had as she read his letter.
I have to say that I like this book even better than I did when I was 15. The...more

Eh, I'm not quite sure what to think of this book really. Its like a cross between Desperate Housewives, Real Housewives of Orange County or one of those Harlequin Romance novels you get from the supermarket with Fabio on the front. Reading the background to it I can understand why Lawrence was so obsessed with sex (Tuberculosis and his wife's very public affair made him crazy) but I think the sex scenes in the book were gratuitous (sp?) and unnecessary. (but this aside how many times have you...more

Lawrence's Lady Chatterley's Lover is with no doubt his most controversial work hence I really anticipated reading this novel. Before reading I had no great knowledge of the novel, only that it was banned because it had explicit sex scenes too racy for the time. Unfortunately, the novel just did not hit the mark for me. After reading it, I didn't know what Lawrence was trying to do - tell a romantic love story (with a dash of vulgarity) or an examination of relationships or sex itself. Although ...more

Lawrence has in recent times fallen out of fashion in the literary world, which is a shame because despite his reputation (often well-deserved) as a misogynist, the themes he explores in this novel go well beyond its sexual reputation. This is a novel about living versus existing. The conversations between the upper class friends proves witty, but ultimately dry, lifeless, as is shown by Tommy Dukes' reasoning as to why he is asexual. Moreso, the novel is about class restrictions, about a dying ...more

I felt this book left a lot to be desired in terms of plot. It was a good storyline; it just could have been more intense/suspenseful. I didn't realize what I was getting myself into when I read the back cover and it revealed the book was originally banned because Britain and the US considered it a form of pornography. I would have to say, those two countries were quite correct. While it is tamer than what we are used to today, I was still very uncomfortable reading it on the subway; worried...more

I can see why this book is the "classic" of English literature that it is. The writing itself is frank and lush at times, but it is the story about a woman struggling to break free from her social class and gendered shackles that makes the book. Whether becoming the love object of another man really gives her freedom, I'm not so sure.

I read this book in high school for a research porject and I is amazing. It was banned in most countries for years. It is romantic and very erotic and you feel guilty reading it but you can't but the book down.

Not the edition I read, but I have to say I don't see how this book became such a classic. Yes, I understand it may have been a bit racy in its time, but it drags and is an overall painful read.

Totally a must read. Re: the birth pangs of industrialization and the sad sorry fix the human race got itself into thusly. O, what I'd give to find a real man.

I have always heard about this book and saw it on sale a couple of weeks ago. I am having trouble getting into it. Seems rather boring so far.

What I thought as I read the book and what I thought after reading the preface and D.H's remarks really challenged me to be a better reader.

More than the novel, read 'A Propos of Lady Chatterly's Lover', Lawrence's defense of his novel against censors ...
