A cute backwards counting book that entails a moose, a squirrel, a fox and all sorts of other animals. Along to the tune of "Ten on the Bed", the animals find themselves going on a thrilling sled ride and one by one they all fall off until..... (well, you'll just have to read the book)

What made me smile:

I'll start by mentioning the illustrations. They are adorable! Each animal has it's own personality as they fall off the sled. The story itself, with all of the rhymes is really neat. It goes ver...more

If there is one children's picture book you buy this year, this should be it! I picked this up last week while working at my son's school's Scholastic Book Fair and it's been a hit ever since! This story has been read numerous times since coming home. It's funny, it's engaging, and it can be read to the tune of "There Were 10 In The Bed". In fact, I usually sing the story to my kids to that tune.

This story is not only highly entertaining, as hysterical laughing ensues, but it's bright illustrat...more

The big draw here is that most of the text can be sung (with a little practice) to the tune of "There Were Ten in a Bed." The story's pretty basic with ten animals on one toboggan sledding down the hill and falling off the sled one by one. Wackiness ensues. Each animal has some sort of winter gear be it earmuffs, a sweater or even a helmet, but moose takes the cake with goggles and rainbow colored leg warmers. Liza Woodruff's get the plot across competently while adding fun details like the snow...more

I'm diggin' the fox wearing a crash helmet. Safety first, especially near the North Pole, I guess.

There were ten on the sled, and the caribou said, "Slip over! Slide over!"
So they all slid over, and Seal spilled out.

Before long, all the Arctic animals have toppled out, from walrus and wolf to moose and squirrel(not the Rocky and Bullwinkle type moose and squirrel, although that would've been great).

Kids will recognize the meter of this book quickly and will like the comical illustrations, as w...more

With rhyming text and great word choice, this one begs to be read aloud! (Or even sung aloud to the tune of Ten in the Bed as many others here have suggested.) It also uses fun alliteration (hare hopped out, squirrel squeezed out, moose muddled out) and counts backwards from ten as each animal falls off the sled on its way down the hill. Kids will enjoy keeping track of all the animals as they continue down the hill in a giant snowball after they've fallen off the sled. This is perfect for a win...more

This is a great book that shows off rhyming word pairs, repeats words, counting and uses a lot of descriptive words. Students will love to hear this story and it can be incorporated into lessons for all of these. The story is about a sled full of animal friends sledding down a hill and one by one they hop, slide and whirl out off the sled!!

Students will be able to sequence and identify one more and one less than a number. Teachers could give a sled bingo game using nine numbers, students put a number between one and ten in each box(wherever they prefer). As the book is read, students will put a transparent chip over the number. This will help early learners identify numbers.

This was my backup book and we didn't end of reading it so I didn't get to see the reaction from the kids. Still, it is a very fun winter-themed book that introduces kids to a variety of animal types, counting backwards, friendship themes, a wider vocabulary with alliteration, and some great illustrations.

In this cute story, ten different animals all want to go sledding, but as they speed up down the hill all the animals fall, bounce or bail out one by one until only Caribou is left! It's just a fun little story that helps reinforce numbers via basic subtraction with some short rhymes and funny adjectives.

Fun interpretation of "Ten in the Bed" with colorful illustrations. Picked it up because we've been singing "Five in the Bed" with Xavier for several months, starting when he was learning to "roll over".
Perfect for winter as the setting is Alaska, with many wildlife creatures we are familiar with.
Samantha
This book is beautifully illustrated in colored pencil. It is about ten adventurous animals that go sledding. TThey all pile on the sled and as they fly down the slopes the animals fall off one by one. So they count down from 10 to 1. In the end they all jump back on the sled and try again.
Jen
The animals are having a grand time sledding down the hill, but as they get further down the hill, each one of the animals fall off, leaving just Caribou on the sled and he doesn't want to sled by himself. Good book to work on counting backwards as the start with 10 and get down to 1.

This adaption of the traditional rhyme "ten in the bed" introduces ten arctic animals all sharing a sleigh ride. As each one inevitably falls off, illiteration is used, so the "wolf wipes out" and the "sheep shot out." This is a fun read-aloud, perfect for a winter storytime.
Sarah
Just like Ten in the Bed, Ten in the Sled is a count down book, where each animal falls off the sled until there is only one left. It is a fun, if not original, romp through a winter landscape with various animals. Would be fun for a Winter Storytime.

The catchy alliterations and musical rhythm (Ten on the Bed) have my 6-year-old laughing again and again. She now reads it herself, but still brings the last page for me to "read fast" to her. The illustrations are colorful and adorable as well.

Thoughts: Fun story about 10 animals who slide off the sled one by one (and some that fell out turn into a big snowball). All creatures in Alaska (land of the midnight sun). Neat illustrations. :)

Shelves: 2010, childrens, math, rhyming
Fun, rhyming narrative that follows a meter that reminds me of Karma Wilson's Bear stories (like Bear Snores On.) The backwards counting is fun and the illustrations are hilarious. We enjoyed reading this book aloud.

Ten uproariously funny animals on a sled heading down the steep hill. One by one, they fall off. How many are left? A nice mix of funny, great drawings, and arithmetic.
Lana Krumwiede
This would be a really fun read-aloud (or sing aloud). The bouncy rhythm is super fun and the illustrations do a great job of filling in the story. Love this one!
Tricia
Cute winter option using numbers for concept...option to sing to tune of "Roll Over". Illustrations are comical and add to audience's enjoyment of the experience.

Appropriate book for me since we just had our second snow of December a couple of days ago. Cute book for its winteriness. I liked the animals too.
Sarah
Take-off of the song, "Ten in a bed". This will be a good storytime book and kids will love the wacky outfits that the animals are wearing.

A winter purchase from school. The boys love this variation on "10 in the Bed." Mom loves the alliteration of animals and actions.

A fun backward counting book about a group of friends sledding down the hill. One by one, the animals leap, whirl, and wipe out!
