My dear sister Clara,

London society is so much more complicated than I could ever have known! Every night is a different ball or assembly, and a different swirl of glittering jewels and rustling gowns. Though I fear I am making social blunders left and right I am having some measure of success in my (or rather, Mother's) objective. Mother is beside herself with glee at t

I would have liked this much more, had the writer not exalted the American spirit so much and presented the British peers as savages, who don't have an ounce of compassion for their servants, family or friends. Really, if they're so bad, I wonder why she bothered with an English hero at all. Americans on the other hand are interesting, unique, caring, loving, clever, kind and are here to save the British ton not only financially, but emotionally too. Excuse me, but not being an American...more

Maddi olarak sıkıntı içinde ola...more

Amerikan varislerinin hikayesine yer verilen serinin ilk kitabı zevkle okundu ve bitti.

Another book that has been on my TBR pile for quite a while. I heard good things about Julianne MacLean but when I received the books there were others I wanted to read and that’s how they were almost forgotten for a while.

Roman 19 yy sonlarında 1881 yılında geçmekte..O dönemde Amerikalı...more

Sanırım Amerikalı olması bunun temel ned...more

Ama Sophie'yi gördüğünde ona duyduğu çekimi gözardı edemiyor birde kızın beşyüz...more

I don't know what it is about Julianne MacLean's writing. It's not terribly good, but it's far from awful. Her plots keep me intrigued, mostly because her characters are frustrating and I want to figure them out. I enjoyed this one more than a few of MacLean's others. If you're not into stories where the conflict is internally driven, steer clear of this one. But if you enjoy a little character study with your romance, it should keep you at least mildly entertained for a while.

Recommends it for: Victorian Age fans
I probably would have done 3 1/2 but not an option! This was ok... I wasn't blown away... It was her first of this series. I am going to keep going... maybe she needed to warm up to her subject... Americans marrying English nobility. It is an interesting subject.

I really enjoyed this novel. I've always been a fan of historical romance and this one definitely did it for me. I guess part of it could be the way I could relate to Sophia, or wish I could anyway. I've always wanted to fall in love with an English man and the extravagance of Sophia being an heiress just made my falling in love with this book that much easier. I really liked the chemistry between the hero and heroine. I liked that at first they didn't want to have anything to do with each other...more

This story is about a wealthy & cautious American heiress who agrees to go to London with her mother to look for a husband with a title but with the condition that she chooses who it is since she wants to marry for love. She is instantly struck by attractive but brooding duke Hero who returns her attraction but fears being ruled by his passions due to negative paternal history of violence & traumatic childhood experiences with emotions. Although Hero has resisted marriage all these years...more

Kitabın başlarında –ilk kitap olmasından kaynaklanıyor diye düşünüyoru...more

No one loves a tortured duke more than me. Add in a spunky " fish out of water" heroine from America and I was fully prepared to love this book. Unfortunately, that didn't happen. The duke, James, seemed pretty wishy- washy in his introspections. "I will marry her. I won't marry her. I can control my passion. I cannot control my passion.". On and on. Sophia, the American heiress, fell in love with the duke a little too quickly for someone who was very determined to take her time choosing a husba...more

An enjoyable read that is a few years old and apparently the author's debut. I really enjoyed the plot though it "jumped the shark" rather predictably towards the end. I appreciated the author's writing style, straight forward and descriptive without getting bogged down in ridiculous details. My only complaint was the last sex scene--it was absolutely ridiculous. It felt tacked on and unnecessary. The sex scenes in general were tasteful (well tasteful for a romance novel) but were numerous and t...more

This was interesting from a historical perspective, to see what the experience of American heiresses who married into the British aristocracy might be like. But Sophia and James never clicked for me. I did not find James' struggle with his emotions compelling. A lot of intimate scenes emphasized their strong sexual attraction with a total denial of any emotional connection on James' part and a strong emotional attachment on Sophia's part. I didn't like that at all, and found myself skimming past...more

A happier and lighter version of Edith Wharton's "The Buccaneers." As a side note, PBS made a series out of the Buccaneers and has really great costuming.

I liked this book, although somewhat predictable, it kept me entertained. I thoroughly enjoyed watching the relationship develop between the main characters, which is something I feel is missing from a lot of romance novels these days. There is a nice balance of angst, romance, and mystery in the relationship to keep it moving and interesting. Overall, this is a great, fast read for those in search of something between heavier or darker material.

It's stupid, but the first book in this series that I read was 'Love According To Lily' and I absolutely loved it, so it was a huge surprise that the same didn't happen with the actual first.

But it just didn't work for me. I didn't connect that well with the characters, I didn't feel sympathy and I didn't really feel something more.

I'll definitely give the other books in the series a try, though, for Lily and Whitby's sakes.

This was fine and overall there were definitely things that I liked about it, but there were also a lot of things that I wanted to make just a little bit better or more consistent.

Now I need to track down Lily/Whitby's story as I am very much into the idea of that, but my only library options at the moment involve being able to read Spanish or Polish. That presents a bit of a problem. For obvious reasons.

I really liked this a lot. The whole Americans going title hunting thing has always been something I'm interested in and there aren't enough books about it. I wish there had been a teensy bit more of the Duke falling for Sophia, but I liked what she brought to him and his family. Definitely will read the rest of them in the series unless something goes horribly wrong.

At first it was so boring, i almost give up with this book, but then it all gets. not amazing, but interesting. I think all this kind of books are somewhat predictable. But beyond that, because I know I am a hopeless romantic, I liked it. Nothing more.

The similarities between this book (2003) and the novella The Wedding of the Century (2011) by Mary Jo Putney are too many for comfort. What's up with that? Furthermore, they are both bland and hard to finish. At least putney's was short?

3 1/2 stars. Good and worth reading but somewhat predictable and not exceptional. I found myself skimming through part of it because it felt a lot like other books I've read.

Starts out slowly but becomes more interesting as you read....Predictable ending. Looking forward to reading the rest of the series to see if author improves.

that was so-so. I went through the motion of this story. I read the book because I realized after reading the forth instalment of the series.
Huong
Enjoyable for the most part. Sophia was a great heroine with a mind of her own. James was an OK hero.
