Very cute and often funny--I enjoyed this latest offering in the New York Blades series. Although I had a few problems with it, they weren't enough to ruin the overall enjoyment I got from reading the book.
This is the story of two egotistical but often vulnerable and unsure people--New York Blades hockey star Eric Mitchell, and soap opera star Monica Geary. They meet on the set of Monica's soap, called "The Wild and the Free", where Eric is filming a cameo. He tries to pick Monica up, with a rea...more

Let me just start off by admitting that I’ve never watched a hockey game (I’m a southern girl, born and bred), and I’m also not a big fan of the ‘sports’ genre of romance. Power Play was a great addition to Martin's New York Blades series. The hero and heroine were not always the easiest characters to feel empathy for, but considering that they were a professional hockey player and a popular daytime soap opera star, their sometimes egotistical behavior is understandable. Regardless of their occasional self centered behavior, I ended up liking both of these characters quite a lot. Deep down, they were truly caring individuals. The hero had to learn how to love some...more

Halfway into the book I actually started to enjoy it. During the first half, I was mostly reading in the hopes that it would get better. Not too long ago I read and really enjoyed Chasing Stanley, which is #6 in the Blades series, which is about the pro hockey team the New York Blades, and centers around player Jason Mitchell and his love interest Delilah Gould.

(I hate the cover. Eric is supposed to be blonde, his twin Jason is brunette.)
Okay, okay...I know you're tired of my raving about the hockey books. This is my last one, I promise! It's just that I really liked it. Of all Ms. Martin's NY Blades books I've read, this one and the first one, Body Check, are my favorites.

Monica is a hot soap opera actress and Eric is a hotshot professional hockey player. Both could use some good PR to boost their professional careers. What happens when they hatch a plan to pretend they are dating? Will true love follow?
I really love romances where the characters are on a mission together (pretending that they are dating for their own selfish reasons, trying to solve a mystery, stuck on a desert island, etc.) and then love develops over the course of the book. However, the key is...more

all of Deirdre Martin's books this one and the first one (Body Check) I love the most.
I laughed out loud many times. the story's interesting.
and I love the guy main character, Eric Mitchell. he's so funny, smart, and confident.
I love the way he showed his love to monica.
i love monica as well. she's so beautiful.
and of course, Ty Gallagher. My fave hockey player, though he's retire and being a couch in blade.

One of my favorite books in this series. I loved meeting Eric in earlier books (specifically Chasing Stanley) and was excited to read his story here.
Monica is a great character and doesn't want to love Eric, but can't help it. I love how torn she is trying to decide which is the "real Eric" and which is the "fake Eric". Is he really that good of an actor or does he really have feelings for her? Even when he tells her his feelings are real she can't believe him.

No, I don't normally read romance novels, but I've seen this book come through the library a few times, and finally my curiosity got the better of me. C'mon! It's a romance novel with a freakin' hockey player on the cover. Of course I was going to read it eventually!
So it turns out I've misjudged romance novels. This was pretty much just chick lit (which I quite enjoy) with exactly two sex scenes thrown in. And the sex scenes were nothing like I've always assumed. Nary a throbbing bosom nor glis...more

The writing style in this book is OK and the storyline is OK, but the characters are so unlikable that I never could get into it. Why bother rooting for a HEA between a "nice" (read: whimpy, unselfconfident doormat) soap actress and a cocky, smug hockey player? They come together originally as a publicity stunt, decide they really do like each other but can't tell "which" persona they actually like. The hero in this case is such a jerk and is so clueless that the "dumb jock" stereotype would hav...more
This book was definetly my favourite so far. I loved both the leads and finally, finally there was significant sexual tension built up before they did the deed. I have noticed with this author, that she throws the leads into bed very early in the book and it effects the emotional depth for me because we know so little about either of them. sometimes I find it hard to match the depth of emotion they are supposed to be feeling with the actions in the book when this happens. This was not hte case h...more
This one was ok, but not that great....the author really did a great job of making Eric a complete man-whore that you just wanted to punch in the face in the last book, so his obnoxious behavior and egotistical personality were expected. I don't know...this one just didn't do much for me. I felt bad for both of them - they both clearly have issues - Eric is a jerk because he's not comfortable being himself and Monica is just a product of a crappy environment so she feels inferior....it was kind...more

It had the spark! Well, it only lasted about for about five minutes! I feel frustrated and angry! It just fizzled! WTH!
The book was so promising. You have a gorgeous, charming athlete, and a beautiful, icon of daytime drama…it had potential. From their initial reluctance to “work” together, to the scheming of their mutual plan, and to the real feelings, was really good. But I hate to say it, but the execution of it fell short.
I have just one more word to say about this book: Argh!

Television soap opera star Monica Geary is a very good actress, but needs alittle push in her career. Enter Eric Mitchell, one of the hottest bachelors, who is an NHL hockey player traded to the New York Blades, who has had his eye on Monica for a long time and is a big soap opera fan. Monica and Eric are told to pretend that they are a couple in public, but as much as Monica wants to think there is nothing real about them being a couple, the sparks start flying faster than hockey pucks and the...more
Much better than the last couple of Deirdre Martin books I read! I went into this with fairly low expectations so I was pleased to find that the plot was actually kind of interesting and the characters had some personality. It is still very much your typical romance novel but I felt as though there were moments where I cared about the characters and the outcome. Three stars.

What can I say....another fun hockey romance novel. This time Martin pairs a successful soap opera star with a hockey player traded to the New York Blades to save the team. Drama and hockey. Who would have ever thought...but for some reason it really worked and was mostly believable. And whatever was far fetched was enjoyable. I can't wait for Martin's next book.

I enjoyed this latest edition to the new york blades series. I was looking forward to reading it as it features eric mitchell, jasons twin brother from chasing stanley which i also enjoyed.
Although there were some bad points the rest of the book outshined them.

Eric was such a ass in his brothers book that you wondered if you'd like him as a hero. As the book went out you got to know more about him and enjoyed what you found out. Monica and him seemed to make each other better people together.
This is one of the better hockey romances I've read! I think it helped that it wasn't just a hockey romance, but a soap opera one too. And that stuff was dead on perfect, so well done.
