This was a pretty cool book. I don't really know much about Russian myth and legend so i probably did not appreciate all the aspects half as much as i should have, but i intend to learn more about Russian history, myth and legend after reading this book. i liked how the illustrations depicted real people as they really looked. the was something that i think gave me more insight into the culture. The pictures were beautiful and the story was well written and easy to understand even with all the R...more
The retelling of the story? Meh (although it's a good tale). But the illustrations? ZOWIE! Gennady Spirin is a master of fine detail, and the landscapes in this book are absolutely gorgeous. His renderings of people here creep me out slightly, but I honestly gasped when I turned the page and was surprised by the first full spread of the sea king's kingdom. Perfect for fish-lovers everywhere.
The writing isn't particularly inspired, but Gennady Spririn is quickly becoming one of my favorite fairy-tale illustrators, behind K.Y. Craft. I also liked the ending--it's unexpected, particularly when compared to a traditional princess story.

love the illustrator. I like the idea of a emotional bond with a city being priority over getting sucked into an arranged marriage. I see how the tale has been able to give artists imagery for many years.
(Picture Book) I really enjoyed this Russian tale about a great musician who is taken to the Sea King's underwater court to play music for him, and is offered a bride in return.
