This is a highly fictionalized (and sexualized) retelling of the life of Bess of Hardwick, as seen by author Virginia Henley. Most of it focuses on her snagging the Earl of Shrewsbury, but also covers a lot of her life and three earlier marriages. While it is entertaining, it's certainly not history, and for that I recommend Mary S. Lovell's nonfiction work. Still, as a romance novel, it's alright if you can handle the occansional use of very crude language.

the heroine was sadly faulty...
to be frank, i found elizabeth a woman in heat (for lack of anything more polite to say). and greedy, too. sure, she may be justified to like this because of what happened to her home but it isnt really a laudable trait, as u may well know. she enjoys leading men on. she flirts outrageously it verges on the offensive.
george is simply a blind fool. handsome as the devil, sure. but i really dont see how he can fall in love with a woman who on More...

20 years ago, a friend of mine recommended me to read one of Henley's books. So, I came across this book from the library and thought what the heck.. try it.
It turned out I liked it.
It's fun to Google names on the web to find the actural historical events, buildings, locations and names that occured back mid 1500's in England.

Henley masterfully brings the emotion to life that is missing from history books. She makes it possible to understand why Kings and Queens did such ridiculous things because she makes them human and thus we are able to relate to them.

Historical romance set back in the "Elizabethan Times" 1553-1608
An excellent story about a real woman named Elizabeth Hardwick who was a friend of Queen Elizabeth's.
5.0 on a 5.0 scale

Without a doubt, my favorite Henley novel! he captures the turmoil of the Tudor reign beautifully.

i enjoyed this story because of how strong the female protagonist is. i appreciate her love and passion for life. honestly, this is one of the few books i remember to this day as stricking a cord in me with certain chapters (or what i think of as scenes in my head) because they would make me feel a certain way, and i would put the book down and just feel. most books do not make me feel that way. im a romance novel lover, so this one is a winner to me.

My favorite historical romance. Well researched, based on a woman's real life. Detailed and a good and ingrosing read.
