I just finished "Underground". This is Kat Richardson's third novel of her 'Greywalker' series and I love it! Her heroine reminds me a bit of Laurell K. Hamilton's Anita Blake...without the sexcapades...or the guilt...or the constant killing. Ok, maybe not Anita Blake. Richardson's heroine is a strong character who wrestles with her choices while always trying to do the right thing...even when it's not the most comfortable thing.

Harper died...for about two minutes. When she came 'back', she came...more

Okay, this series continues to entertain me much more than I initially expected it to. I was so pleased to get a copy of Underground for my birthday and I immediately dived right in. It picks up shortly after the events of Poltergeist and Harper is still dealing both physically and emotionally with the fallout from her ghost busting stint. Things with tall, blond, and lanky Will are less than stellar and distraction comes in the form of Harper's mysterious friend Quinton who shows up on her doo...more

Third in the series. The mystery/plot seems to move along a little faster in this and we finally get to learn more of Quinton, but there's still that blandness holding it back.

There's a rich patina of history and in the unlikely event I find myself in Seattle I'd love to take that ghost tour underground. The concept of raising the street level was fascinating to me, and having the hidden level below. Meeting the 'undergrounders' aka tramps held huge potential for characterisation.

My Take:
By far the best of the series – the character interactions were smooth
and relatable. There weren’t any gaps in the story line, no unexplained jumps, resulting in a loss of the reader. I liked getting to know more about Quentin and his history, and enjoyed the progression of their relationship. I think that the author is now fully comfortable with her characters and their abilities, as well as her own to weave a cohesive story.

This story line was especially interesting – she mentions tha...more

I would gladly have paid around $5 a piece to procure each of Ms Richardson's Greywalker series on my Kindle. Unfortunately, her publisher has made an eBook-unfriendly pricing decision that has lost her these sales. Instead, I found a copy of "Underground" at a local library.

While I would have preferred to start the series at the beginning, "Underground", which is #3, stood very well on its own. The detail of the setting, including the paranormal "Grey" which the Seattle-based PI heroine, Harpe...more

Third in the Greywalker urban fantasy series about a private investigator, Harper Blaine, who can enter a fold of the universe that infringes between the normal and the paranormal.

My Take
An interesting exploration of homeless and Northwest Indian cultures combined with a tour of the old underground of Seattle. Richardson does state that she took liberties with Seattle's sunken city but if only one quarter of it is accurate...wow! Be sure to take the tour if you ever get out to Seattle. It soun...more

This is the third book in the Greywalker series by Kat Richardson. The 4th book, Vanished, had already been released and the 5th book, Labyrinth, is due out August 2010. There are six books under contract for this series last that I heard. I enjoyed this book and thought it was a good addition to the series. I listened to this on audio book. The audio book was fairly well done, sometimes the narrator has trouble distinguishing the different male voices, but other than that it was easy to listen...more

Kat Richardson’s Greywalker series features a private investigator heroine called Harper Blaine who lives in Seattle and thrives on a type of grey that lies far below the clouds. Harper’s grey is the haunt of magic and ghosts, of history repeating itself, memories of Seattle’s fire, and tunnels underground. The tunnels are real, though maybe not so accessible or so inhabited as in the novel Underground. They were left when builders raised the level of streets and buildings to avoid the floods.

My bad! I'm usually so anal about reading a series in order that it is very rare for me to read books out of order. Since they weren't numbered, I read this, the third book, second. But I don't regret it one little bit. One of the things I love about these books is their sense of feel for Seattle, its history and the effects of the Native American culture there. This story is centered on the Underground and, while the "real world" Underground is only available for a few guided tours, the author...more

I got this book from a friend who was purging her paperback bookshelf. It's not something I would have picked up on my own. The premise of the series is fairly original, as urban fantasy goes: Harper Blaine, a private eye in Seattle (how come so many of these series are set in the Pacific Northwest? Aren't people there afraid to walk the streets by now?), has a near-death experience and, once recovered, finds that she can see ghosts and other critters who live in our world. In this book, she run...more

This is the third book in the Greywalker series which follows the experiences of Harper Blaine, a private investigator, who after being clinically dead and resuscitated has acquired the ability to see and interact with the "grey," that nebulous area between worlds filled with the paranormal. In Underground, she is approached by a male friend who is aware of her dubious gift and asked to look into the disappearances, mutilations and murders of some of Seattle's homeless population. Parts of peopl...more

This is definitely the best of the series for me. After Poltergeist, I wasn't sure if I wanted to continue the series but decided to anyways.

This time Harper is hired by Quinton to solve who is killing the homeless people who sleep in the underground of Seattle.

There was a lot of good things in this book that made me extremely happy.

The first thing is that Will is finally gone. *happy dance* I didn't like him ever since he appeared in the first book.

With Will gone, Quinton sneaks in. \(^0^)/ I...more

OK, you will see now that my rating has jumped to a 5. This was now a book I couldn't put down. In fact, as I read, I kept looking to see how many pages were left, something I seem to do when I worry that the book will be over too fast. I also noticed I was stalling as I read, getting up for this or that, I think so I could take the time and relish the fun! The romance picks up, maybe that was what I was missing, but I now am "getting" the Grey. The writer's style of romance is not the deep soul...more

So I've been trying to figure out why the Greywalker novels have such low reviews ... I think I've finally figured it out. Greywalker novels don't have anywhere near as much action as say the Dresden files, though I must also say that Kat Richardson doesn't have the humor the Bob the skull brings to Dresden either. Greywalker novels though are much more about the mystery than Dresden and as such have only a few action scenes.

However, this is the best Greywalker novel yet. I really enjoyed Underg...more

Harper Blaine was your average small-time P.I. until she died—for two minutes. Now Harper is a Greywalker—walking the thin line between the living world and the paranormal realm.

And she’s discovering that her new abilities are landing her all sorts of "strange" cases. Pioneer Square’s homeless are turning up dead and mutilated, and zombies have been seen roaming the underground—the city buried beneath modern Seattle.

When Harper’s friend Quinton believes he may be implicated in the deaths, he p...more

On the whole not a bad book, but it didn't strike a chord with me. The story was lacklustre and the writing, while at times good, was also pretty bland. That's Underground's major problem: I couldn't bring myself to love it, nor could I let myself hate it. It's mediocre.

Harper Blaine, the female once-nearly-dead PI with a touch of magic, is a fairly likable character. She doesn't get on my nerves the way some "hard-boiled" PIs can, swooping in and out of the scene like they're always in charge;...more

Underground was another great addition to Kat Richardson's Greywalker series. The story begins with several homeless people getting killed or going missing. Harper gets involved because of her friendship with Quinton and it turns into an even bigger problem than either imagined. In this book, Harper finds herself having to deal with her relationship with Will and learning more about her good friend Quinton. This book continues to build upon the development of Richardson's world and character dev...more

The very first Greywalker book didn't grab me- it was a typical 'set up the world' urban fantasy. However, that it was set in Seattle gave me a big soft spot for it, and that the main character was more than a little feisty made me pick up the second even though the first book didn't blow me away. Now, I'm glad I gave it a chance. Two was alright.

Three? Loved it. Richardson blended Seattle's underground history with the plight of the homeless, and blended in Native American lore. It was rich an...more

This is one of those series that I enjoy - but, even among the brain candy I typically read, this is particularly cotton candy. I have a lot of trouble remembering details from previous books - it's only as the author refers back to specific things that I get a case of deja vu.

Am I reading too many similar things? Maybe. I don't have trouble with Kim Harrison, Kelley Armstrong, etc, though. There's about 4 series that my brain seems to insist is one series, all with the same protagonist.

This book kicked the "paranormal investigation" part of the series into high gear, as we watch Harper grow into her new skills and the new type of business it brings. I loved the way Seattle's history, both the architectural side and the racial portions, was entangled and embellished in the novel. Also, the SPOILER with SPOILER was MOSTLY satisfying after the way the last book ended and this one began. ;-)

Highly recommended to anyone who likes similar paranormal investigation type book...more

Another solid installment in the Greywalker series. The best part about this book is that much of it takes place in Seattle’s underground, the tunnels and old sidewalks below the modern city. I greatly enjoyed learning about the underground’s sordid history, and I can’t think of a better setting for a creepy tale about ghosts, murder, and monsters. I also liked the character development, the heart-pounding action sequences, and the nuggets of romance. Overall, Underground is a good mystery, on p...more

This third installment in the Greywalker series was an absolute delight to read. Harper has grown so much since Greywalker and has more stability and self confidence in the Grey. The flow of the book was excellent and an absolute page turner. The use of Seattle's history mixed with the author's imagination was amazingly well done.
That being said, I have one issue. Harper's relationships. To me it seems like her relationship with Will was an afterthought pasted in. For Harper being the personalit...more

Harper Blaine died and was brought back. Since then, she is able to see creatures that walk in the grey space between life and death. In fact, she can walk in the grey.
Something is living in the underground parts of the Seattle waterfront and it is draining the homeless of blood and then gnawing off parts of their bodies. Harper and Quinton get drawn into hunting the monster. The homeless who have seen it describe a monster that sounds the Salish legend of Sisuitl, a sea serpent.

This is a really exciting book. Kat Richardson has an amazing imagination and this book is action packed. The story builds around Harper and Quinton as they try to discover what is mutilating the homeless population of their fair city. I found it unique in that he homeless play a huge part in the tale and it is interesting to see and learn about the subculture. They run into zombies, ghosts, and ancient mythological creatures from Indian folklore while discovering details about the mysterious Qui...more

In the third book of the series we find Harper way more comfortable in working in the grey. It is winter in Seattle and the homeless are looking to stay warm and dry and are turning to the underground to do so. The problem is that something is stalking them down there and they are turning up dead or even zombiefide. Quinton, Harper's friend turns to her for help and so they go underground to find out what or who is doing the killing.

This was an enjoyable read combining urban fantasy, mystery an...more

This was my favorite of the 3 books in the series that I have read so far, which is a good trajectory: it's nice to have the series keep improving. I still feel pretty lukewarm about the series overall though. I'll probably read the rest of the series, but I am not chomping at the bit.

Good things about the book: more Quinton. He's sort of been in the background of all the books, and he's an interesting character. I'm glad to have seen more of him. Also good, lots of action in the Grey. The endin...more
