The Mountain Between Us is one of those cheesy, sticky-sweet, and formulaic novels. Dr. Ben Payne and Ashley Knox, two strangers, crash in the wilderness. She is a soon-to-be-married writer and Ben is a married, orthopedic surgeon, who is mountain climber and an Eagle Scout.

The chapters are divaded beween flashbacks about Ben's marriage with Rachel and the adventure side of story where Ben and Ashley have to survive in the snowy mountains of Utah. For me, the flashbacks to Ben's family life were

I guess i don't get it. I could not finish reading this book so i skimmed it. Survival stories are one of my favorites but this was just too much to be believed. Everything goes too well for a male doctor and a female writer, both nearly at death's door after a small airplane crash into a mountain. How incredible that they have many of their survival tools at hand. Thank goodness we have a doctor as well. Isn't it great that this duo is dialoguing their wit to beat the band and throwing snowball ...more

In what may be the longest synopsis in the history of the universe, nearly the entire storyline for The Mountain Between Us is presented so I’ll spare you all the excessive details. Basically, the tale here is of Ashley and Ben, strangers who meet at the airport while trying to get to their respective homes. When an epic snowstorm shuts things down, the two hop a puddle jumper in hopes of beating the weather and continuing on to their

The Mountain Between Us came across my feed a couple weeks ago (Thanks, Lisa!). I was quite intrigued, as this is a plane-crash-survival story AND it is going to be a movie (coming out in October per imbd)...I was sold!! I absolutely love survival stories...and books that are turned into movies!

I really enjoyed this book and even though there were times I had to suspended disbelief (which is common with fictional survival stories) I was hooked and couldn't read fast enough to reach the ending.

I loved this book. It had many of the things I love. First of all it is a plane crash survival story. I eat that stuff up. Then it had humor and pathos, a strong heroine and a very strong and morally upright hero. The writing was well done. I could feel the cold and ice an snow along with the characters. The author avoided using deus ex machine to get his characters out of their very tight spot. The story was told in the first person from the hero's POV interspersed with diary entries which he w ...more

Three and a half stars.
Adventure/ survival stories don’t usually impinge on my radar but I after having read another Charles Martin book and enjoying it and recommendations from others about this one, I decided to give it a go. The story concerns surgeon Ben Payne and Ashley Knox, a young magazine writer, who is flying back home to get married. When the plane crashes they are plunged into an unenviable situation, trying to keep themselves alive in mountainous snow covered terrain. To add to the

Schmaltzy romance, a Lifetime movie can't be far behind. Dr Ben Payne and journalist Ashley Kno are thrown together after their small chartered plane crashes in the mountains in the High Uintas Wilderness,in Utah, killing their pilot. The setting is described as one of the most remote places in the US. Ashley has a broken leg, Ben just some broken ribs, so it's up to him to get them out of there. Fortunately, both are athletes in superb condition. In addition, Ben's hobby is mountain climbing an ...more

I went into this book with some doubts. I got wind that this was "Christian fiction" before I started it and I prepared myself for very heavy-handed God this, God that. Oh, how WRONG I was! This was completely unlike any Christian fiction that I have read before it. You weren't pounded over the head with the Bible every other line. This was so subtle and pure. Despite the harsh environment Ben and Ashley were trying to survive in, this was a soft and gentle story about love and loss, hope and de ...more

The Mountain Between Us is an adventure story, a story of survivial, but above all a love story. It's the story of two strangers who charter a plane because the regular flights have been cancelled due to oncoming snowstorms. Ashley needs to make it home to her wedding and Ben is a surgeon with a lot of work ahead of him. The plane goes down in the middle of a snowy wilderness, in the High Uintas in Utah. It's a grueling journey out of the danger, cold and isolation of their predicament but we le ...more

Darn the stars...Yes, I really liked this book but the stars always give me problems. I just want to tell you why I liked the book and not have to rate it. One day I feel one way and the next, perhaps, differently.

I have been racking my brain this week, trying to remember how Charles Martin first showed up on my radar. I know that I purchased a few of his books for our library based on reviews. They sounded like pleasant reads that might appeal to our members who like inspirational or gentle rea

After reading my second novel from Charles Martin, I think he is my new favorite author! He is able to 'teach' you real things about life in the context of an intriguing story. This one is about love. Not the hot, sweaty, I'm-in-love-because-he's-a-vampire type love (though don't get me wrong, there is a place for that type of entertainment), but it's the type of love that perseveres hardship, trials, and roots itself in selflessness. It would be really boring to just say that - but you BETTER l ...more

Halfway through the book I literally stopped reading and thought to myself: "This book was only published because Charles Martin had a previous book that did really well and the publishers knew people would buy it just from that." I don't even think his publisher read this book- either that or people's standards are way too low.

This story has been told before, the writing style was HORRIBLE, the dialogue was painful, the characters were undeveloped, and the ending was predictable.

I always try to

THE MOUNTAIN BETWEEN US is a beautiful survival story by Charles Martin. In response to the question of where he got the idea for this story, Charles Martin responds:

“A friend and I were climbing the Woody Ridge Trail in the eastern U.S. It gains 3400 vertical feet in 2.2 miles. The conditions were horrible. My friend—who’d made some poor clothing choices—dehydrated a few hundred feet from the top. Started having decision-making trouble and losing fine motor skills. The temp dropped to about ze

The writing style of this author is really poetic and he certainly has a gift for writing. This time, though, it felt as if I had read parts of it before. It really had many of the same elements as When Crickets Cry. In fact, the main characters from both books were so similar there were times it felt like reading the same story. If I had read this one first, however, it would have gotten 4 stars.

As far as the story itself, even though they were supposedly in this dire survival situation, it ne

“Once a heart breaks…it doesn’t just grow back. It’s not a lizard’s tail. It’s more like a huge stained glass that shattered into a million pieces, and it’s not going back together. Least not the way it was. You can mush it all into one piece, but that doesn’t make it a window. That makes it a pile of broken colored glass. Shattered hearts don’t mend and they don’t heal. They just don’t work that way.” 48 likes
