[These notes were made in 1981:]. A slim vol. of an amateur poet, published in Glasgow in 1858. Most interesting for the range of styles he manages to imitate, rather than the verse itself, which is competent but forgettable. The title piece is in Spenserian stanza (with a few archaisms and a reference to a Fairy Queen, in case we don't get the point). Would have guessed it was a Scots author anyway, from the frequent reference to Burns, and the Scottish themes of some poems -- Bruce, the ...more
