This book is about a little girl, Gabi Greenberg, and her family celebrating Hanukkah. Gabi and her family do all the Hanukkah traditions: lighting the menorah, making latkes and hearing the story of the brave Maccabees who fought against King Antiochus for religious freedom. After Gabi and her family talk about the Maccabees story, her parents give her a bike that she names Hanukkah. Gabi goes out to ride her bike and has trouble pedaling. 2 1/2 stars. This is one of those straight-forward stories that isn't bad but isn't really great. For a kid who doesn't know about Hanukkah, this gives some introduction. I did enjoy the brief introduction to the Macabees. And I enjoyed that the little girl used what she had learned about the Macabees to help her deal with life.
