"A rhyming story that is full of laughs. 'The alarm can ring. The birds can peep....Today's the day I'm going to sleep,' says a lazy boy one morning, and despite a pail of icy water, television coverage, and the arrival of the Marines, he vows to stay in bed--and he does! The repetition of concepts and words will keep children turning the pages, as will the energetic drawi...more

I love Dr. Seuss and this is one of my all time favorites! I think it is very fun and light-hearted. Ever since I was a little kid I would read this book and laugh. It is a story about a young boy who refuses to get out of bed in the morning even through all the crazy events that happen! From tickling his feet to a huge marching band he stays in bed through it all. This book is a great read aloud and the fun rhyming will really engage young children. I would suggest this book to anybody who want...more

I love Dr. Seuss books, and this book is one I have never read. This book is about a boy who is refusing to wake up. throughout the book the whole town tries different things to wake him up but none of them work. The have marching bands, they try to tickle him, they scream but it does not matter what anyone does, he has already made up his mind that he is going to just sleep all day.

This book would be great to use in the classroom around Dr. Seuss's birthday. You could not only use this book but...more

I like this book, not because it has a fun rhyme scheme or because entertaining things happen, but because I totally get where this kid is coming from. Yes, the things he suggests as things that will not make him get up are funny and I enjoy the creativity that went into the writing of this story. But, more than anything, I can relate to the sentiment of simply not wanting to get up and just being allowed to sleep for the whole day. Interestingly, I think this is something that more adults can r...more

This is a hilarious story told by the classic author Dr. Suess about a little boy who refuses to get out of bed. The book goes on to tell the reasons why the boy would rather stay in bed then get up and eat his breakfast and go to school. It doesn't bother him that the children across the country are getting up and going to school--he's just not getting up for anything! This would be a great read when things in the school year are getting dreary and students are sleepy. After reading this book,...more

This gets 5 stars on general principal. My mother got it for me as a present because the main character of this story and I have so much in common.

I was especially happy with the ending as (view spoiler)[the boy never does get up. I was worried that he'd spend the whole book explaining how he wasn't getting up for anything, just to rise at the end. Nope! He means it! And that is exactly how a book like this should end. (hide spoiler)]

Fantastic book for kids! So imaginative and creative. Easy read that children will find delightful!

Dr. Seuss is always brilliant! His stories and rhymes are fun and entertaining! Some of my all time favorites!! Such a great way to entertain children and get them interested in reading!

Such a cute book! Would have students write about what they love about their bed or staying at home using descriptive language. I think this would be a good activity because many of us don't want to come to school some days!
Repetition
Rhyming and word patterns
Onomatopoeia

Dr Seuss - what happened, man? Compared to Cat in the Hat and Green Eggs/ Ham this is second-rate to put it politely. No story, weak concept, bad lazy message for the kids, lack of creativity. Probably paid you too big an advance. Capable of much better, mate!

Nothing...not roosters, police, cold water, or even The United States Marines are going to make our peaceful sleeper get up. I Am Not Going to Get Up Today! is full of humorous rhymes and silly situations.

Used for Dr. Seuss Party at BPL: March, 2011

My children and I LOVED this book when they were little. No matter how many times I read it, they still laughed at the little kid who wouldn't get out of bed. Sometimes we would play the same game which always ended with giggles and tickles. Fond memories.

This book was OK. Not one of the best Dr. Seuss books but it was ok. Talks about a boy who... you guessed it... doesn't want to get out of bed. Really my kids don't have a problem with this. They have a problem staying in bed until it is time to wake up.
Samantha
A little boy decides to sleep all day and nobody and nothing can change his mind.

Full color illustrations are full of all kinds of zany wake up temptations etc but the young boy keeps his promise and sleeps the day away.
Philip
The Dr. Seuss books that were not illustrated by him just don't have the same eccentric whimsy that books he both wrote and illustrated do. Even so, this one is still rather amusing, and the illustrations aren't bad.
Teresa
Seuss is the ultimate whimsical children's writer, his talent in playing with words is astonishing and amuses almost everyone no matter how old they are. People of every age will love and cherish this book for ages.

Love it so much! I played it on last night when I couldn't sleep, and this version really made me giggle to myself several times- with the reading and the background music/sounds!

Susan
E loves this one. I think it is easily one of his favorites. He takes issue with the author playing fast and loose with the time zones, but otherwise, he could read it over and over.
Cornelius
For kindergarten children, I would use this book in the classroom to help children identify and recognize rhyming words while reading about a boy who vows nothing will get him out of bed.
Jennifer
This isn't one of my favorite Dr. Seuss books. The story line is all right, but not amazing like his other books. I also wasn't engaged by the pencil lined drawings.
Anna
I love the Dr. Seuss books. I read this was a kid and loved it then, as well. Boy doesnt want to get out of bed and a bunch of people try and convince him otherwise.
Jennifer
This book has a lot of great rhyming words in that students can recognize. It also has a funny theme that students would enjoy about not getting out of bed.
Megan
PB 21: I could relate to this book. All I wish to do is sleep in on the weekends. It is a great beginner book and contains rhyming which helps with that.
Kendra
This is how I feel most mornings! I don't know if this is the best book to read to a kid who struggles to get out of bed, but it sure made me smile. :)
Samantha Penrose
I was hoping that this might inspire my kids to spend a day lazing around in bed... Not likely.
I would have given this four stars, but the ending was weak.
Patti
Another Seuss favorite. I especially loved the U.S. Marines since the pictures helped me understand (at that age) what it was like for my dad to be a Marine.
Amy Shore
This one always brings a smile because all the way through, every time I read it, Lili gets very upset that the little boy wishes not to leave his bed.
Beth
This is perfect for a Friday story time or bedtime story. It makes it comical to see that no matter what happens the character continues to sleep.
Wastell Mcneil
Many people try different things to get the boy out of bed but he won't get out of bed. This is another good Dr. Seuss books like all of his others.
Wendy
My VERY VERY VERY first Dr. Seuss book.
I could hear this story a million times with out getting bored, the pictures are so good!
Bonnie Pohlig
All about a boy who refuses to get out of bed, and says all the things people can do to try, but none of it will work.
