With less sex, less violence and more politics the second Cassandra Kresnov novel is a continuation of where the last novel left off. This time the repercussions of the previous action of the FIA result in the planet of Callay considering its withdrawal from the Federation through the proposal of Article 42 (a nod to the meaning of life?). The further character development wasn’t up to much, the new characters introduced were somewhat one-dimensional cut-outs from the dictionary of cyber-punk, a

Breakaway, the second Cassandra Kresnov novel by Australian SF and fantasy author Joel Shepherd, picks up soon after the ending of series opener Crossover. Sandy, a highly advanced artificial human with military training, is now attached to a squad of SWAT agents, while also helping the government of Callay review its network security. Despite the sensitive nature of this work, and her ongoing integration into Callay society, many political and religious factions still take issue with her presen

What I like most about the book is sandy's character development. but the one thing I don't really agree with is why I gave it 3 stars. the relationship between sandy and vanessa. vanessa being bi and having a thing for sandy but sandy doesn't feel that way about vanessa. sheperd's reasoning behind this is that sandy would never have sexual feelings for vanessa because she wasn't built that way...but she's a robot that was built with sex as a tool she's basically a sex godess who can kick ass an

The library, in its infinite wisdom, decided not to acquire the first book of this sci-fi series, so I had to start with the second in the series. It wasn't too hard, but it did mean that some of the political stuff was a bit lost on me.
Sandy, a military GI (or android), has escaped the League (the organisation that created her, and whom she fought for) for the world of Callay, where she is a member of the security forces, and a highly controversial political issue. Callay is decid More...

In last year’s CROSSOVER, Joel Shepherd introduced synthetic humanoid killing machine Cassandra Kresnov, who not only was able to kill dozens of people in a relatively short timeframe, but also contemplate her existence and the meaning therein.
Now Pyr brings us BREAKAWAY, the second in a trilogy of books that have been available for years Down Under, but woefully ignored by lesser publishers.

The second book in the Cassandra Kresnov series does not disappoint. Everything that I liked about the first book, the people, the action, and the intrigue get better and the story somehow explores the human condition more deeply than the first book.
If you like action/intrigue science fiction, this is one of the better series of books out there.

Interesting series set in the 23rd or 24th century. Humanity has expanded outward, and is in two main political groups. The series is set during a cessation of hostilities between them, when an artificial person is seeking refuge with the side she had fought against.
Interesting take on the future and what it means to be human.

Second book continues the series. Read from the first. It will read better. While not as riveting as the first book it is still a very good read.

Kinda trashy with a lot of tech backdrop, almost more tech than story-line, but as pulp fiction it is successful.

To be honest, I ended up skimming most of this one. I love Cassandra and think she's a fascinating character but this book was too heavy on the action/politics and not enough on her personally to hold my interest.

3.5*
Not as good as Crossover, the first Kresnov novel, mainly because the plot was all over the place. The characterisation and worldbuilding are still top notch.

Less action in the second of this series... but still a fun read. Sandy is more human than most of her fleshy counterparts and you can really relate to her. A lot of amatuer political intrigue, those parts could use some cleaning up. I need to feel a little more invested in the ideals of the civilisation for me to care what happens to it, I much rather care about how it affects Sandy et al.

A fast paced, very smart take on the moral questioning of when AI becomes 'human'. I found myself very much liking the historical recollections of twenty first century politics. It's very easy to see how our actions today blend into a very alien future not that different from our present.

I had a hard time finishing this book. Well written, just bogged down to many times with "feelings" for me. Usually that isn't a problem, but I try to stay away from characters that are depressed. Cassandra seems to have more problems than most and she tends to brood about them.
