This was not quite as good or as deep as The Heroine's Bookshelf, although I did enjoy the longer excerpts from the novels. She also left out the heroines from YA and juvenile literature who were the precursors to these more modern heroines. I was, however, glad to see Roxanne Coss from Bel Canto on the list, some from a 21st century book.
To this list I would add: May Dodd, from 1000 White Women; Snow Flower and Lily, from Snow flower and the Secret Fan; Kwan, from the Hundred Secret Senses, Sar...more

Won copy through First Reads. This is basically Cliffs Notes for great female characters in literature, with a few pages dedicated to each book/woman. My first reaction was, "why would I read this? I'd rather just read the actual books." But really? It was addicting. I enjoyed revisiting favorite characters from well-loved books, found several new books I want to read, and decided to re-read My Antonia. Would make a fun gift book.
I don't love collections of excerpts but this one wasn't bad. I found a couple books that I would like to read (Little Dorritt by Charles Dickens and Middlemarch by George Eliot). I had also read the entire books of some that she excerpted and thought that the particular excerpts the editor chose were not very representative of the book as a whole or even highlighted the woman very well. It was a diverting read anyway.
