I'm a fan of the Artemis Foul books. I've listened to them all. Quite entertaining. If for no other reason than they're read by an Irishman. So, I figured I'd take a listen at another one of Colfer's books. Half-Moon Investigations is a solid book that spoke (no pun intended) to me personally.

As with the Artemis books, you've got a pre-teen boy that tries his very best to be as independent as possible, has a higher than average IQ, is witty, clever, and finds trouble around every bend. ...more

Half-Moon investigations

From School Library Journal Grade 4-7-Diminutive Fletcher Moon may not be the most popular 12-year-old in his Irish town but he's proud-maybe a little too proud-of the badge that he constantly flashes to let everyone know that he's an online graduate of a private detective academy in Washington, DC. The other kids admit that Fletcher, aka Half Moon, has solved several tough cases at Saint Jerome's Elementary and Middle School, so they come to him when they have a pr...more

My parents and I listened to this book on CD while we made the hellacious drive from central Virginia to Long Island, New York, on a FRIDAY AFTERNOON!! Yes, that meant we had to go through Friday afternoon traffic in Washington, D.C. and then Friday evening traffic in the New York metro area. It sucked. (I *told* them leaving Friday at 1PM was suicide, but no one ever listens to me...)

Young Fletcher Moon was the only thing that made the trip bearable for me. The narrator perfectly understands...more

From a blog post I wrote in 2006:

I really like Eoin Colfer's books. His Artemis Fowl series about an adolescent master thief is very entertaining, and though written for kids, gives the reading audience credit for being intelligent.

Since his books are classified as "Juvenile", they're in the kids' section at our library. To get to them, I had to cross the bridge across a moat and enter the "castle" which is where all of the kid selections are kept.

I felt like a do...more

I have noticed that Colfer has the knack of starting as book very abruplty by not giving an introduction just explaining everything in the main storyline. I think that may be the reason i consider hima genius as usually authors start by explaining te story and what is it about and it's characters. But not for Colfer he is a step ahead.I loved the Artemis Fowl series truly gripping and sensational to the last moment. This book is great but i am missing the technology facts which were there in Arte...more

This is a fun book from the author of the Artemis Fowl series, which I devoured. It's an engaging variation on the boy-genius theme. Except this time, instead of 12yr old Artemis plotting to overtake the Fairy Underworld, it's 12yr old Fletcher Moon, who lies about his age to earn a legitimate Detective's license from the Internet. He then carries his badge everywhere, solving small crimes around the school yard, until he gets coerced into investigating a large "Mafia" family in town. ...more

I knew when smoky jazz filled the car that I was in for trouble, and I was right. I had to leave ten minutes early for everything because I just had to finish the chapter. The combination of Eoin Colfer's dime-store humor and Sean Patrick Reilly's melodramatic brogue makes me believe I have entered the world of a P.I.

The characters are just wonderful, falling into mystery novel stereotypes while still managing to surprise you at every turn. The plot is engaging, the dialogue is entertaining...more

Fletcher Moon is a twelve-year-old detective who has been set up. He has a hunch who is the real criminal but this turns out to be more than just the case of a missing lunch box. He ends up teaming up with Red Sharkey, one of the local known hoodlums who has also been set up. They uncover a conspiracy to take over the world by the fifth grade girls' pink gang 'Les Jeunes Etudiantes' where boys are the anathema. Exciting as this is, it is not enough to clear their names and after some more in...more

Eoin Colfer’s Half-Moon Investigations, yet another delightful Independent Reader/Young Adult from the talent that brought us the numerous Artemis Fowl books. Fletcher Moon is an elementary school youth who passed an e-mail certification and once he turns 21 will be a licensed detective in the State of Florida; presently, however, he is practicing his “professional” in the 6th grade of his local school and neighborhood. Multiple thiefs, an assault, an attempt of arson and a visit to the lo...more

We listened to this book on cd on a recent trip out of state and the whole family really enjoyed it. Fletcher Moon is a 12-year old private eye who breaks the first rule of the book ("never get involved in your case") and finds himself in the middle of something that may be more than he can handle.

I was pretty excited about this trip - we rented a car and it had satellite radio, and I must say, I didn't get to even listen to it because we were too busy following Half Moon's adve...more

This is a great book to listen to! The narrator gives it the ambience it needs with his Irish brogue and his "just the facts, ma'm" narration. Fletcher Moon is a unique character, aware of his own flaws and willing to accept the fact that he is an outsider in his school. But his no-nonsense descriptions of his fellow classmates (especially the girls in PINK) are really funny. It was suspenseful with the right amount of danger to make it interesting for 9 - 13 year olds. Recommende...more

I really enjoyed this book. It is about a 12 year old boy who is obsessed with being a detective. He even has passed an online decective certification course and proudly tells his fellow students about his badge. The other students hire him sometimes to solve little mysteries but he gets tangled up in a large mystery involving the police, criminals, in which he himself is implicated. The mystery was a little bit predictible but still interesting with some unexpected twists.

I absolutaly loved this book, i thought it was better than artemis fowl!

in this book, fletcher (half moon) gets in trouble for bieng an official detective, and its not like CSI where you get data evidence and crime solved, both he, and his unexpecting counterpart get framed! it's up to them, and them alone to solve it within 24 hours!

youll find twists and turns, and stay up an extra hour just to get to the next chapter, you'll always want more!

sarcastic kids can only be loved in a book... ^__~

i kind of like this book after reading artemis fowl 3&4 which aren't as rich as the first two. colfer could be very sarcastic in his choosing of words, and i like it very much. the story was standard young adult detective story, with a little twist around the end which i personally think very interesting. the ending is very unexpected. i give 2 thumbs up for the ending of the story.

I was pleasantly surprised by this book. I have never read any of the Artemis Fowl series (probably Colfer's most famous books), but have seen many of my students reading them. This book seemed very current, was wonderfully sarcastic at times, and had a great sense of humor. The main character is hilarious and I loved the relationship he develops with another student who was supposed to be his polar opposite. Great read.

Fletcher Moon treasures the badge that he earned in an online private detective course. April Devereux hires him to find an item stolen by one of the Sharkeys (who are all criminals) and things soon turn out to not be what they seemed. His badge is stolen and he's arrested for arson after April's playhouse burns down. Fletcher finds himself in a heap of trouble and the only person willing to help him is Red Sharkey.

This was a really fun book! Great main character, very amusing turns-of-phrase, a little suspense and action. Plus some fine detective work to boot. Okay, it's about a twelve-year-old, so probably not suspenseful or complicated enough for you mystery-lovers out there. But for a fan of juvenile fiction like myself, this is a winner. I might actually go back and try to read the Artemis Fowl series now...

I love the Artemis Fowl books. I thought I'd try this one and see if I like Fletcher Moon as well... I loved it! Eoin Colfer is just a great writer. I loved the plot and to think that Fletcher actually solved the case and made a new friend! I loved that the girls were so determined and they actually devised a way to get what they wanted, even though it was kind of mean and illegal. A great book.

Fans of the Artemis Fowl series may enjoy entering the world of Fletcher Moon, a 12 year private investigator with an authentic badge. Written in Colfer's humorous and quirky style, an entertaining read. I'm more partial to the Artemis Fowl series and eagerly anticipate the next installment. Meanwhile, this character has promise of becoming another series.

I thought this was hilarious. I did listen to the Sean Patrick Reilly-read book on CD. I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have liked it as much with out his accent adding to the story. I laughed so hard at the Elvis impersonation. Half Moon is clever because it makes little kids stuff seem so serious, but shows that they really are quite clever.
