This novel was really very entertaining, as well as educational. I learned a whole lot about life in the Navy, life on board a submarine, all coupled with a neat techno-thriller with a clever story. I will confess it took the author awhile to get to the main adventure, but even the path to the adventure was entertaining and informative.

The US submarine Memphis should have been mothballed decades ago. Instead, she is charged with one last, secret mission: to locate leaking containers of Russian nuclear fuel on the floor of the Arctic Ocean. Lead by the Bligh-like commander Lowell Hardy, the Memphis' crew deals with flaring tempers, faulty machinery, raging Arctic Seas, and their newest crewmate, Jerry Mitchell. Mitchell was a naval pilot whose career ended with an unfortunate accident. Politics got him assigned to the Memphis...more
A Naval Thriller this one has lots of action and suspense. Jerry Mitchell was a Navy Aviator about to graduate from flight school when a blown tire caused a crash. He survived, but damage to his wrist washed him out as a pilot. Wanting to stay in the Navy he applied to submarine school and with persistence and some help from a congressman uncle he got in. His first assignment was aboard an older sub that was about to be decommissioned when it was given a new assignment which did not go over well...more
I've read books by Larry Bond before, I think. This was a bit of a surprise in that I didn't remember how apparently thorough he is. This was very enjoyable and moved at a good pace. A submarine story with the crew going into Russian waters to document dumping grounds of nuclear waste. In the process, the crew finds warheads that shouldn't be there or even exist. There are some needless points but, then again, there always has to be tension in the crew. The main character's conflict with his nex...more
Okay - I need to say this, right off the bat. Larry Bond is an awful writer. His characterisation has all the subtlety of being bashed in the face with a brick, his female characters are the most one-dimensional stereotypes imaginable, his protagonist is a cardboard cut out and his plot is more signposted than an L.A. freeway.
But - and here's the thing - the man knows his submarines. By God he does. Every last pipe, valve, tube and gasket. He also knows his submarine warfare tactics, and he clea...more

I had some trouble getting into this book at first, not because it wasn't well written but because the character development was very spot on and some of the personalities on the boat mirrored what I deal with at work on a daily basis and that is part of what I'm trying to get away from when I'm reading.
The author did a great job describing the different people on the boat but it was a little difficult getting through the first half which had more to with character developement than action.

Enjoyed it tremendously and enjoyed every single bit of the book. although there were many navy jargons, but once familiarized with it, everything's fine. I could visualize almost everything and during the fight against russia's boats, couldn't put the book down and can't wait to finish the book. appreciated the author's effort in understanding from the people in the navy but i think he should expand the ending a little, i think there's a hint of romance between jerry and emily. liked the charac...more
Let's see. Hero is transferred from aviation branch thanks to influence by relative. Suffers abuse on board sub because of it. Mean but in the end kind captain. Hero overcomes hardships. Makes friends with girl on board (scientist checking out new prototype.) Helps evade attacking Russians. Lots of nifty technical detail. Mix all these standard plot elements together and you have a decent if many-times-done-before-story.
The techno-thriller goes green. Now that the great Soviet threat is over, I'm sure the techno-thriller writers are searching for new avenues to put their heroes in harm's way. In "Dangerous Ground," Larry Brown blends the old Soviet (now Russian threat) with the threat of pollution by having the crew of the USS Memphis search Russian waters for evidence of radiation pollution caused by the dumping of nuclear waste. Instead they find a cache of nuclear warheads that have been dumped in those wate...more
The operational details are truly amazing - he's done a great job capturing what its like on a nuke boat. The captains are assholes and pretty much everyone is scared to breathe in a way not to their captain's liking.
I avoided reading the synopsis on the back jacket and just plunged in (afterall, there's a submarine on the cover -- that's all I needed to know) and I was a bit disappointed at the mission aspect of the book. It seems like a very expensive environmental mission, and that's coming f...more

My first sub book, and first in this type of techno-military, action fiction. I normally give up on them but decided to keep going with this one. Easy read and interesting. I found it to be a good book (especially since I have rarely read about subs). The one strange thing was that it was descriptive narrative for 2/3 of the book and then non-stop, heart-pounding suspense for the last 1/3. Interesting combination.
I haven't read this type of book in a long time. Was slowed down a bit trying to keep up with the technical side as I'm not well-versed in military stuff and kept forgetting the acronyms (that the author did clarify). But found the book really tapping into my emotions. And I was too nervous toward the end to even consider putting it down! Recommend this one!
