This is probably my favorite of all the McCammon books. How can you go wrong with a werewolf master spy fighting against the Nazis? You can't.
Its just pure pulp fun. Some may consider it trash but they're just not enlightened.

The fact that this book even exists is so great, I can barely even contain myself. My friend M. Sweeney Lawless passed it on to me when I was working on a screenplay based on my werewolf blog, and I fell in love, mainly with the huge balls it took the author to write this book.

This is still to date one of my all time favorite novels. McCammon has written some great tales but this is one I can (and have) read over and over and over again. 007 meet the Wolf man; actually no... 007 IS the Wolf man. McCammon takes you back and forth between WWII espionage, personal vendetta, 007 spy action and werewolf Russian heritage. I'll be reviewing more of Robert McCammon's books, but this is one of my favorites. Of course I can't get my wife to read it since she still judges the book by its cover and says, "I don't want to read a book with a werewolf on the cover howling at the moon." *sigh*

That being said, they really should change the cover art for this book, because it is NOT a cheezy werewolf novel at all. It's a fantastic journey thru the life of a man who indeed gets bitten by a wolf and then is taken into the pack...more

You know how sometimes you read a book and you can just tell that it's being written to a specific genre even if you don't know what genre conventions it's actually answering? Well, this book is clearly a Manly Adventure Story of a sort which is unfamiliar to me. Since the first time I read this I've tried to get into several of the author's other novels and just sort of rebounded off the genre.

The Good

Michael Gallatin is a werewolf who works for the allies during World War II. The top brass asks him to head deep behind enemy lines to make contact with a double agent so that he can retrieve information that will reveal Hitler's Super Secret Plan to overcome the grim economic consequences of running a military state and actually win the Second World War. Why does it all fall to this dapper, lycanthropic individual? Because he's the man for the job, dammit!

I listened to Swan Song earlier this year (my first McCammon book) and really enjoyed it (despite the fact that post-apocalyptic stories are not my favorite). When I found out about The Wolf's Hour, I knew I would enjoy it. And I did. There's something astounding about McCammon's writing in that he manages to capture your attention - and hold it - despite his books being *enormous*. I never get bored.

When I found out about The Wolf's Hour, I knew I would enjoy it. And I did. There's something astounding about McCammon's writing in that he manages to capture your attention - and hold it - despite his books being *enormous*. I never get bored.

The whole idea of a werewolf fighting Nazis - awesome fun. I like werewolves, and WWII stories are always interesting to me anyway, so I knew this would be a winner. It was.

However, I do have a couple of issues with the book - one was that I wonder what happened to Michael's son Peter. I kept thinking that the child would make an appearance later on, but after the scene with the soldiers storming the house where Michael and the other werewolves lived, he was never heard from again. It would be great if the author wrote Peter's story sometime.

Another issue I had was with the way a couple/few scenes were written: the scene in the opera house where the dead body was hanging onto Michael and he was unable to extricate himself ... well, I found that a bit of a stretch. I realize the author might have thought the situation would provide more tension/drama, but I kept wondering when Michael would transform his arm into a claw and remove the dead body that way. There were a couple of other scenes where I think he could have used a claw (or at least unleashed it far sooner than he did) and it would have been okay because those characters needed to die anyway (i.e., there was no need to keep his abilities a secret in those situations). One was the scene in the train with the hunter (Michael eventually did use a claw, but he could have done it far sooner). The other was when Michael and Boots were fighting it out at the end. There was really no need for the fight to have carried on so long. Just transform the hand and slice the baddie to bits. I mean, come on! You've got these awesome powers, Michael - use them at every available opportunity! :-D

Also, it seemed that at least one physical relationship was portrayed for gratuitous purposes only. The affair with the French woman was unnecessary to explore in such detail. I'm no prude, but the amount of explicit sex in this book did come as a bit of a surprise, given the fact that such scenes were pretty much non-existent in Swan Song. Perhaps Swan Song was the exception to McCammon's rule ... I dunno, maybe such scenes are part of his usual formula. LOL.

Anyway, none of my issues with the book were enough to diminish my enjoyment - but they were the reason I rated the novel down one star. I think the near-perfection of Swan Song made me expect the exact same level of excellence with Wolf's Hour.(less)

Subterranean Press recently released a limited reprint of this book, which was originally published in 1989 by Grafton (Harper Collins). In honour of this, it deserves a re-read and a review as I am sure that there are a few people out there completely unaware of this gem.

It is a werewolf story completely unlike any other I have ever read and even 20 years after it was released is still a good read. It is a werewolf story completely unlike any other I have ever read and even 20 years after it was released is still a good read. Forget Underworld, forget The Howling, and definitely forget Twilight... this Lycanthrope is more ‘James Bond’ than ‘Lucian’.

The prologue offers us two tales – one of a wolf and one of a man - and introduces us to the two aspects of Michael Gallatin. Born Mikhail Gallatinov to an aristocratic family in Csarist Russia, Michael now works as a British spy and is sent on an important mission into Nazi occupied France.

The book works almost like two novels in one, flitting between the two halves of Michael’s life and at times, is in danger of spoiling the pace of the story. The first story is an account of espionage and adventure, set in 1944 Paris. Employed as a British spy, Michael is given a mission that requires his special abilities. He is dropped behind enemy lines to recover vital intelligence from a resistance agent that is under constant surveillance from the Gestapo. His discoveries lead him onto Berlin to learn more about a Third Reich plan known as “Iron Fist”.

The second story is about and how Mikhail Gallatinov acquired his lycanthropy whilst a young boy in early 1918. Less than a year after Csar Nicholas II abdicated, his mother, father and sister were all shot by revolutionaries while on a family picnic. Mikhail escapes the gunmen only to stumble upon a pack of werewolves. When he wakes, he discovers he has been bitten by a werewolf, or lycanthrope as they call themselves. After surviving the initial transformation of the virus, he is adopted and raised by the pack.

The character of Michael/Mikhail is an A grade alpha male. The women he meets find him irresistible, even though he does little more than look good, and have broody green eyes. He reveals nothing about his inner feelings, and while the reader gets to learn about his past, and therefore his motivations – his conquests don’t. I struggle with understanding what drives these women to fall for someone they know absolutely nothing about. He isn’t even that great a spy – seemingly getting himself captured on a regular basis and often to the detriment of his colleagues. I was able to work out what he was searching for, knowing the same information he did, several hundreds of pages before him. Fans of Ian Fleming’s work will however, love this character.

Praise must be accorded to the author as the book seems extremely well researched. A lot of historical detail regarding the Russian and WWII portions of the book is evident. It is clear that the author has also done extensive research into the mannerisms of wolves, and an obvious affection for the animal comes through.

Personally speaking, the fantasy portion of the book and Mikhail’s life amongst the pack was far more entertaining for me. The family dynamics between Mikhail and the other pack members are well written and engrossing.

One of a couple of things that disappointed me was the two halves of the book don’t really ever seem to meet, even though I kept hoping they would. There are some lose ends from the early years of his life that just seem to be swept under the carpet and never mentioned again. There is a big gap in Michael’s timeline when we leap forward from his feral time as a child in the forest to working for the British Government. I can only presume that the author intended on doing a sequel to fill in this plot oversight. Apparently the Subterranean Press reprint includes a recently written novella about Michael Gallatin, and so I if you are lucky enough to get hold of one of these special editions, these issues may well be addressed.

The other thing I found a little grating was the use of euphemisms when recounting the unnecessarily drawn out sex scenes, seems now quite dated. I am not saying I was expecting pornographic levels of detail, but it seems inconsistent with the glorious techni-colour of detail used to describe the guts and gore.

That being said, it is a good story, and the action at times is quick paced with complicated plot lines yet easy to read. Michael goes on a journey of self discovery in the book and even with the slightly misogynistic overtones, he is a character of nobility and dignified savagery as he comes to terms with his two sides. Despite the cheesy concept of werewolf-turned-spy, it is a novel well worth sticking with and one I would heartily recommend.

It takes a pretty good writer to pull this off:
Write an espionage tale about a British spy who is in a race against time to determine what secret the Germans have in mind to thwart the Allied Invasion of Europe. Now throw in the fact that he's a werewolf without making the whole thing sound stupid.

Yeah, it sounds really stupid, and the front cover of my paperback does nothing to dispel that.

Ok, so it's a book about Michael Gallatin, a Russian werewolf super spy going after the Nazis just before D-Day. And do the ladies love his musky smell, and the way he eats his meat almost raw? Yes they do.

Been re-reading some of the over the top Robert McCammon novels I loved in the 80's. I'm having a blast doing it.

Evil Nazis versus secret werewolf spy and his comrades. Lotsa blood and guts, some torture and cannibalism, and of course the obvious who's the monster idea. Some of us wear the fur and claws on the inside. Really intense action, narrow escapes and distinctive characters. This author has quite the imagination! It had a little something for everyone: mythology, sex, adventure, action, history. Kind of a cross between Wolverine, James Bond and Inglorious Bastards. I will preface this by saying that I love Robert McCammon; I think he's a fantastic storyteller! I was trying to find another book of his to read and came across The Wolf's Hour b/c there was a Kindle edition. At first I thought the premise - a werewolf helps the Allies during WWII - was a bit cheesy, so I was hesitant to read it. I'm not really into writing reviews for the sake of other people. But I'm going to write them for myself, as im pretty sure that a few years from now I'll have difficulty remembering my thoughts on every book ever read. Just getting it out of the way.

When I was in high school I wanted to write a story with a werewolf and my friend suggested I read this book. I had never heard of Robert McCammon before so I wasn’t sure what to expect. As the title suggests Gallatin is no ordinary individual, he is in fact a werewolf! This makes the novel interesting and original, what could have been a standard ‘boys own’ war story is given a dark supernatural twist with a hero who uses his powers to assist him with his dangerous mission.

As the story unfolds it is clear that Gallatin will need all of his wits and years of experience to draw on as well as his abilities. There are also some colourful side-kicks to help him along the way as well as plenty of mysterious and alluring women.

The villains he finds himself up against are particularly nasty and include a sadistic game hunter, a high ranking officer and a scientist all sympathetic to the Nazi cause. With D-Day imminent and everything riding on the Allied invasion being a success Gallatin and his friends must foil the Nazi’s sinister plans known only as ‘Iron Fist.’

This novel kept me hooked throughout and it works on both levels as a wartime thriller and horror story. McCammon has the same prose style as James Bond creator Ian Fleming so everything is given a vivid immediacy. It so easily could have entered the realms of farce but McCammon’s execution and literary skill ensures that this is a first rate thriller with a nicely handled twist. I highly recommend adding this original thrill-fest to your Kindle collection or book shelf.

I could go even to [9/10] for the sheer amount of entertainment I got out the Michael Gallatin adventures and the skilled control of McCammon over the plot and the pacing of the narrative.
There are a lot of things done good in this high octane thriller and few to criticize. In true Indiana Jones style the hero goes from one rollercoater ride to another, from the sand dunes of El Alamein to the rooftop of the Paris Opera and from the rushing train on the Berlin outskirts to a desolate rocky islan...more

I love this book. It is full of action and the characters are great and it has werewolves and Nazis; what more could you want. This is the third time I have read it and it was just as good as the first.

I know some people do not like flashbacks, but this book had flashback sections which are put beautifully in line with the main story in the era of the D-Day landings. Hence we are given plenty of action and plenty of history as well so Michael (the lead character) has much greater depth.

What fun! A werewolf who becomes a British master spy and takes on the Nazis almost singlehandedly! It sounds like pure pulp, but I've always admired McCammon a lot more than the literary establishment seems to, and I find this a case where an author set out to do a very specific thing and did it extremely well. The book is gripping and it provides an interesting take on the life of the good old werewolf, staple of horror that he is.

this is a great one. McCammon knows how to end a chapter. a true master of his craft. I love this book and its a long time favorite. demands to be reread again and agian. not your typical werewolf story at all. Nazis take it hard. set in world war two. wait til you meet Boots... ha

I really enjoyed this unique take on a spy thriller. Michael Gallantin is not only a more than competent British spy, he's also a werewolf. The story of his life is intertwined with that of perhaps his most important mission and both parts complement each other perfectly.

The premise is so comic book it's a step away from juvenile,... while England is battling the WW2 menace of an imminent Nazi invasion, they send a covert secret agent to uncover the plot that could turn the entire war to Germany's favor,... & that agent also happens to be,... yes,... a werewolf. awesomatik hat ein Herz für Trash. Und Werwolf-Content hatte ich hier auch lange nicht mehr. Grund genug mir eine vergilbte Originalausgabe von The Wolf's hour (Jahrgang 1989) zu besorgen. Stellt euch diesen 600 Seiten Epos wie eine Mischung aus inglorious Basterds, The Wolfman und Indiana Jones vor. Was kann man daran nicht mögen?
Klar, die Handlung klingt trashiger als jedes Asylum-Movie. Aber Richard McCammon, weiß wie man eine gute Geschichte erzählt. Und so erinnert The Wolf's hour an die großen Abenteuerfilme der 80er Jahre.
Parallel zur zweiten Weltkriegshandlung, erfährt man nach und nach wie Michael Gallatin als Kind zum Werwolf wurde. Wie er die Ermordung seiner Eltern im russischen Wald miterleben musste und von einem Wolfsrudel angefallen wird. Das Rudel nimmt ihn auf und weist ihn in die Geheimnisse der Lycanthropie ein. Doch bald schlagen Arbeiter ihr Lager in der Nähe der Wolfsunterkunft auf und fangen an die Bäume zu fällen...So nimmt das Schicksal seinen Lauf.

Dem grausamen Nazioffizier Jerek von Blok (erinnert stark an Hans Landa) mit seinem hünenhaften Schützling Boots, der seine Opfer am liebsten zu Tode trampelt, dem sadistischen Großwildjäger Harry Sandler, der sich gerne in Begleitung seines aggressiven Greifvogel Blondi (!) zeigt oder den wahnsinnigen Wissenschaftler Dr. Hildebrandt, der Giftgasexperimente an Kriegsgefangenen betreibt.
Aber auch die "Guten" geben interessante Figuren ab z. B. Deutschlands Golden Girl und Propaganda Filmstar Chesna Van Dorne, die eigentlich als britische Spionin arbeitet oder der raubeinige Russe Lazaris, der gemeinsam mit Michael aus dem KZ Falkenhausen ausbricht. Bevor unser haarige Held mit den grünen Augen allerdings siegreich hervorgehen kann (oops Spoiler?), muss er einige Strapazen über sich ergehen lassen (u.a. Folter, Schlägereien und diverse Schusswunden). Über allem steht die Frage: wer sind hier die wahrhaftigen Monster? Die Wölfe oder vielleicht doch die Menschen?

Fazit
Die Backstory um das Leben im Wolfsrudel (inkl. explizitem Werwolfsex), hätte aus meiner Sicht etwas kürzer ausfallen können. Die beiden Handlungsstränge kommen am Ende nicht zusammen und sind teilweise nicht abgeschlossen (Was ist mit Michaels Sohn passiert??). Der Rest ist feinste Unterhaltung auf B-Movie Niveau. Besonders gelungen fand ich die Episoden in der Naziburg am Wannsee und das Todesspiel im Zug von Harry Sandler. Wer hier den Literaturnobelpreis erwartet, wird unter Umständen enttäuscht. Alle anderen bekommen einen unterhaltsamen Abenteuerroman mit Hollywood Nazis und Werwölfen. Bissiger und blutiger Genrespaß. Aaaaouuuuuuu!

Shelves: horror, werewolf

This is a great story about a man who is a spy for the government and happens to be a werewolf. Sounds sort of corny, but it's not. It's fantastic! You will love these characters. Very enjoyable!

My 8th McCammon book. Very good, very hairy Bond fighting the Nazis.
This guy knows his way around a war and tells it beautifully.

In my humble opinion, Robert R. McCammon is on par with Clive Barker and the BRILLIANT Stephen King. His stories have great imagination and pace and his use of description of the terrors lurking in his novels, are guaranteed to have you sleeping with the lights on; if you are in fact able to sleep. I have enjoyed thoroughly the 5 - 6 novels of his that I have read including this one. My suggestions for those who are new to Mr McCammon are as follows.
