Gorgeous book! Everyone should read it.

Christmas is the largest celebrated holiday around the world each year, yet very few know the real reason for the season. Even Christians (who should know better than anyone else) have been brainwashed and have forgotten that it is not about Santa or his elves or eggnog and Christmas trees. It's about the birth of Jesus and ultimately the sacrifice he made for all of us!

Rick Warren not only elaborates on the reason for the season, he does so with such a pas
As I was skimming this boring, purposeless, unoriginal book, I kept thinking to myself that Rick Warren must have written it simply to make a little cash from the hapless folks looking to purchase something for their religious or sentimental relative during the Christmas season. This thought was confirmed by the plentiful filler inspirational photographs and the advertisement on the last page for the "Purpose of Christmas" Christmas music CD. Warren added nothing to the discussion about the sign ...more
Great, easy, simple, yet prophetic read about the true meaning of Christmas and God's gift to all of us. This was the 1st year, in almost 39 years that I really started to understand the meaning of Christmas and Rick hits it dead on about the TRUE GOOD NEWS for ALL THE PEOPLE, it's not about religion, it's not about rules, its not about earning it, it's about GRACE & LOVE and it's amazing. Well done, thanks for all the ideas for our family celebrations and may you continue to bless our world ...more
Rick Warren, founder of the Saddleback Church and author of the bestseller “The Purpose Driven Life” has written a short holiday book to inspire readers to discover (or rediscover) the purpose of Christmas. Warren states that there are three purposes to the holiday, to celebrate God’s love, to seek salvation through Jesus Christ, and to strive for reconciliation. The book is for those struggling with life during the holiday season and could be a comforting read for someone in that situation. Par ...more
I'm festive.

Update - I liked that this book reminded me of Jesus during Christmas time, however I have issues with things being preachy and I hate books that are like "stop doing that. it's dumb." Really? If I could stop being worried and just trust that God is going to come and save my day, I would. I guess I'm not ready to depend souly on my savior? Who knows. I just felt like this book was trying to boost up Christianity, when what I was looking for was talking about the Spirit of Christmas,

Each year Christmas is celebrated earlier and earlier through commercialized chaos. It saddens me to see us become increasingly distant from the true reason behind our celebrations: the birth of Jesus Christ. This book helps the reader restore the focus back on Him and explores the reasons why this amazing gift was given to us in the first place.

I will probably bring this book out at the onset of every Christmas season and read it. I enjoyed reading it and discussing many of the points with my
While there is nothing radically new in this book, it is well worth the read. It isn't very long or difficult, but it does help remind you of what Christmas is really about. While the world constantly bombards us with the commercialism of Christmas, anything that helps you to keep your focus on our Lord is worth the time. I found myself being overwhelmed by all the activity surrounding Christmas and this book helped me pause and regain my focus.
The purpose of Christmas was a great book. I am going to re-read it every Christmas. The whole Serenity Prayer on page 106 was great to read. I am going to try to memorize the other 2/3. The salvation prayer on page 121 is worth multiple repeatings. I am going to definitely having a birthday party for Jesus every year now. Christ is the reason for the season.
Rick Warren is a pastor and also wrote the best seller "The Purpose Driven Life". This book reminds us what Christmas is really about. Christmas is a time for celebrating the birth of Jesus. Salvation and reconciliation are also covered in this book. We so often forget that Christmas is all about Jesus' birth and we should rejoice and celebrate his life. Rick Warren writes like he is talking to you. He reminds us that the greatest love of all is the love God has for us. This author reminds us th ...more

I "borrowed" this from the lounge at's very simple but I'm enjoying it...helps put a little more meaning in Christmas.
It'll be in the meeting room at work if anyone else wants to "borrow" it!
I absolutely loved this book!!!! Not at all what I was expecting but so much more! I am definitely going to his other book A Purpose Driven Life and can't wait to do so! LOVE LOVE LOVE IT!
My rating would depend on who you are. If you're a Christian looking to learn something new, this book is not really written for you. It's probably about three stars. It's a wonderful reminder of things you probably have learned already, from "The Purpose-Driven Life" or maybe "Peace with God" (Billy Graham). It's a great collection of "wow" scriptures in different translations you may not have seen before, unless you're a fan of "The Message" (which I am not really).

If you're not a Christian
Rick Warren’s book, The Purpose of Christmas, describes with simplicity and clarity the true message of Christmas. What does Christmas mean to you? Is it the shopping? Is it spending time with family? Is it giving to others? The true meaning and purpose of Christmas can be found in the story of Christ’s birth. Christmas is a time to celebrate the birth of the Savior of the world.

The hurried activities during the holiday season can cause us to take our eyes off the manger. The manger was God’s wa
I would like to give this book 4 or 5 stars due to the sacred subject, but it just didn't measure up for me. I enjoyed a lot of it simply because I agree with much of what he says. But he just keeps saying it over and over. Along with the heavy dose of repetition, he seems to be pushing his Purpose Driven Life program. And I really did not like most of the different Bible translations that he uses. I'm a bit of a purist when it comes to scripture and I prefer the beauty of the King James transla ...more

In his powerful yet compassionate voice, Pastor Rick Warren sounds the clarion call to "remember the reason for the season," taking readers back in time to the most wonderful story of all -- the birth of the baby Jesus. The Purpose of Christmas, is the most clear definition of Christianity – of what it means to follow Jesus, what it means to be saved – of anything I’ve ever written,” Warren says.

Using Christmas, the book explains why Jesus Christ came to earth – which Warren says can be summed

In this time of worry and concern over political correctness when wishing people "Happy Holidays" or "Merry Christmas," when bumper stickers remind us to "Keep Christ in Christmas," and when the media kicks up a frenzy over the White House's calling the national Christmas tree a "Holiday Tree," there's a little gem of a book by Saddleback Church pastor Rick Warren (The Purpose Driven Life) which puts the story of the birth of Jesus Christ back into perspective.

We seem to have lost our way. The
A great book about the purpose of Christmas, namely why Jesus Christ is celebrated every year during December. Christmas has been obstructed to mean many different things instead of celebrating Jesus' birth, but this book reminds us why is Christmas so important. This would be a great gift book to non-Christians that explains the gospel effectively and simply. Christians should also read this book as a reminder of why Christmas is so important and how we can celebrate Jesus' birth more personall ...more

I read this book as a nod to Rick Warren's influence. By all accounts I've read, he's done an incredible job of growing his California-based ministry, but his upcoming gig at Obama's inauguration as caused some controversy. This is the first of Warren's books that I read.

It was a pretty quick read, which was nice. I picked it up yesterday afternoon and finished it before bed (after going out for a holiday dinner and celebration).

I was looking for a book that would put me more into the "spirit" o

This is a wonderful book. It speaks of the plan to salvation, the true reason for the season, and yet it also will help you become grounded and re-centered if you have already received salvation. So many things I needed reminded of about faith, trust, love, forgiveness, and just simply living this life we have been given are in this book. I feel this book was brought to me by God's hands when it was placed into my Mother in law's hands to give me as a gift for Christmas this year. I have been ha ...more
I really really liked the message of this book!
So dont get me wrong on this because I gave just 3 stars.

Its just that for more stars I wished to learn more about christ and have more of an "wow" effect at the end of the book.

There are other religious books out there that just touched me more.
Like The Shack: Where Tragedy Confronts Eternity.

But I loved, really LOVED the message of the book, how nowadays we forget what christmas is all about, its about the birth of Jesus Christ!
Its a Birthday part
I absolutely love this book, and I have read it several times. It is truly a favorite. The Purpose of Christmas plainly and simply unfolds the treasures of Christmas. Pastor Warren explains with thoughtful candor and honesty why Christmas is so important and that it is the season that will change your life forever. I will continue to return to this wonderful book and renew the valuable message for my heart. This is a book everyone must read.
At first, I questioned myself why I had to read this book again. I found in one of my storage bins last night and it didn't left me since. I can now say that I'm glad I got myself to reading it, even if Christmas ended four days ago.

It took me back to how I was the first time I read it. It also reminded me how important Christmas is and must be treated and reflected as such in our lives. I have been one of those who felt stressed out this Christmas season, and I know I shouldn't be. Thankfully,
My older brother brought me this book for Christmas because he is a very religious person and he wants me to learn the true meaning of celebrating Christmas as well as for me to become closer with God. I ended up loving this book because it taught me a lot. The book starts off by telling the readers how many people forget the main reason for celebrating Christmas. A lot of people say they celebrate Christmas because they made it through another year, they get to be with their families, or becaus ...more
I have listened to Rick Warren's sermons (which are great) and picked up the book because of his reputation. Although the book is spiritually sound, I had difficulty with the writing style. I felt like it was a book of lists and maybe I should be taking notes. Although he writes around a framework of three purposes of Christmas, there were sublists and I felt that it was confusing at times. I also just finished reading "The Shack," which may have colored my interpretation of this book. Of course ...more
A great message not so much about Christmas rather the love and grace of Christ and the hope we have in Him. Well written, short and easy to read. Very encouraging and uplifting. Would make a great gift for someone down and out over the holidays.
A good short read. It is written toward the unsaved or new Christian as an introduction to who Jesus is and how God can guide your spiritual life down the right path.

I would recommend this to any young Christian anytime throughout the year, not just Christmas.

Rick Warren gives a simple message about what is Christmas and what is the proper response of those who understand the message of Christmas. The book is broken down into four parts:
* The Purpose of Christmas
* A Time of Celebration
* A Time of Salvation
* A Time of Reconciliation
The message of Christmas is that God came to earth as a baby who became a man, bringing salvation through the cross which brought reconciliation between God and us. Christmas is the celebration of this baby's coming. That i
This book is so amazing. I am glad I have found and read it. It remained me about the true meaning of Christmas. Highly recommend :)

This book contains a crystal clear description of the real meaning of Christmas. Our activities around Christmas can come with huge risks. Often, we spend far too much-in effect placing bets that the gifts we give will be received with the same delight that they're given. When that is not the case, it is easy to be disappointed and remorseful. The greatest gifts come without price tags and the story of Christmas is the narration of the greatest gift of all. I really enjoyed this little book. I am doing The Purpose of Christmas 3 week Bible Study and this is the perfect companion book to go with it. It is a great stand alone book also.
