My Rating: 2.5/5.0

Two words to describe Scarlet Nights: what happened? Why don't I enjoy reading Jude Deveraux's books that much anymore? The first time I read her novel in the Edilean series, I loved it so much that I put out all the holds that I could on my library card just to read her books, but now, as I read the earlier books in the Edilean series, I can't help but be very disappointed.

The plot was intriguing. Sara discovers that the man she's one-hundred percent absolutely crazy about an...more

I could accept the characters' individual...quirkiness. I even almost made excuses for them actually: Mike can be an asshole because he doesn't have much experience being genuine with people. But you know, with that kind of background, I think it would be even better if he was really a bastard, at least he could earn his redemption in the end, and not just suddenly turn into this likeable person who really just charms his way around because it's part of being undercover.

Sarah, on the other hand...more

This was an author that I collected and read when I was young, but reading her books now is a serious disappointment. Her characters are the same irrational, inconsistent characters as 10 years ago -- for example, if this person is supposed to be some hot-shot detective, who hardly opens up and whose coworkers know nothing about -- how is this person supposed to all of a sudden be some Mr. Perfect who cooks like a 5-star chef and who suddenly opens to everyone around him? I don't buy that for a...more

This was, quite possibly, the worst book I have ever read. The main woman, Sara, is a weak woman who lets her fiance tell her what to do and then he disappears, she is still insanely loyal and thinks there's a good reason he up and left in the middle of the night not telling her where he's going. By the end of the book she is some super smart catch a criminal genius. Give me a break.
Main guy, Mike, Comes through a tunnel into his sisters appt. and scares Sara who is staying there...Really a tunn...more

Yeah! My run of bad luck with Jude Deveraux is over! Actually, the first book in this series was one of those I didn't care for, and I unknowingly skipped the second, but I'm glad I picked this one up.

The setup is fun (one of those that you willingly suspend disbelief for because hey, it's a fantasy): Mike, and undercover cop, is sent to Edilean to track down a con artist whose son is marrying a local. They don't know why the family has hit on this woman as a target, so Mike's mission, if he ch...more

More like a 3 1/2
I do believe that listening to this book helped - I was held captive by the mere fact that I was driving my car and could not skip pages. At times the book was slow, and the dialogue stale. At other times it was fast-paced and intriguing. I enjoyed the changes in the characters as they got to know one another, and let their true nature out. I believe Sarah had hidden her true self for too long - and preferred the character that emerged. As usual, I had a hard time with the speed...more

Muitos autores querm conjugar romance com suspense e mistério tud...more

After Days of Gold Edilean 2, I wasn't certain if I wanted to return to Jude Deveraux's little town in Virginia or not. That book disappointed me greatly in its return to the style of writing Deveraux uses in her colonial America novels.

Thankfully, Scarlet Nights had more in common with Deveraux's recent titles and was a good, fun read. This book could be read as a sequel to the first book in the Edliean series, Lavender Morning Edilean 1, but prior knowledge of the first book isn't all that nec...more

I found this story charming, though a bit too goody-two-shoes for my liking. Deveraux lives in a world that is so much more innocent and small-town interfering than I can even contemplate. I think I would have run away screaming at all that nosey Parker behaviour by Mike and Sara's family and friends. And their version of Scottish re-enactment is so modern and set-like it is funny. Kind of like all the fake stuff they have at the castle in Edinburgh. But, I guess since this type of re-enactment...more

I love Jude's writing. Love the subtle descriptions that tends to add flavor to her books. I believe only seasoned authors have this knack. Why 4 stars? Well it's not the writing or dialog those were nicely done. It was the story. While this was mostly a romance it was told around a mystery that was also nicely done. But it was dull. I mean seriously dull. My question is why do all romance writers always start writing mysteries? How many authors out there do we go nuts over and then this wonderf...more

Edilean is a very small town in which everyone knows everyone else. If they aren't related to one another, then they have known each other since birth. They are not opposed to "outsiders" but are very protective of one another as well as the town's history. So, when Sara Shaw gets engaged with Greg Anders, a man that no one in the town likes, Sara sees a conspiracy from the town to rid her of Greg. This doesn't bode well for Mike who has to use Sara and seduce her away from Greg to catch the mot...more

My review:

Scarlet Nights by Jude Deveraux was one of the books I won from another book blogger’s giveaway. I didn’t know what to expect, only the information I saw on the back side of the book and it caught my eye. I read it during my July vacation and enjoyed it incredibly.

Scarlet Nights is a part of Edilean series, it is book 3, but it is standalone book, so I did not even get the feelings that there was some information missing. I read this book in one sitting almost; I just had to get coupl...more

This is not the sort of book that I would normally read - it caught my eye on the new book stand at the library and sounded promising so I thought that I'd give it a try.

The book centre's around the character of Sara Shaw whose fiance gets a phone call in the middle of the night and then disappears and she cannot get hold of him and he is not returning her calls. The steps in the typical hero, who just happens to be a policeman investigating her fiance, called Mike.

It is a great story and tells...more

Sarah Shaw is happily planning her wedding to Greg Anders. The wedding is in a few weeks, but Greg had to leave town suddenly and she hasn't been able to contact him since. Then one night while she is temporarily sleeping in her friends' apartment while her plumbing is being fixed, a trapdoor opens in the floor of her bedroom and a (very handsome) man emerges. Mike Newland is an undercover FBI agent who is investigating a family of criminals and has traced them to the small town of Edilean. Afte...more

Hmmmm.... I find that I disagree with some reviewers comments on the unbelievability of the characters. I reckon that Jude explains the change in Sara's personality when she delves briefly into the relationships between herself, her mother and her sisters. She shows that Sara has hidden the stronger part of her personality. So it makes sense that these events have drawn her out and displayed more of the real Sara. I also think that Mike is not true to his alter ego when he is faced with a case t...more

This is the third book in the Edilean series, and I read it out of sequence. This is also the first Jude Deveraux novel I read.

Blurb:
Mike Newland is a witty Floridian cop who travels to Edilean, VA to search for two wanted criminals who are said to be hiding in the small town. The mother and son team (Mitzi & Stefan/Greg) are fugitives and Mike agrees to go undercover to catch the felons. Sara Shaw a seamstress is a quiet, old fashioned girl who recently became engaged to Stefan/Greg. It is...more

This will be a short and sweet review as I did not finish this one. The premise of a undercover cop sent to protect a woman who was unknowing marrying a con artist intent on getting something from her she didn’t even know she had was a great one. It intrigued me. I eagerly got to this one because I had never read a Jude Deveraux book. After the first few chapters I had a hunch this one wasn’t for me. It dragged entirely way too much. Sara was supposed to be this innocent, home grown woman..and s...more

Author Jude Deveraux is the NEW YORK TIMES bestselling author of thirty-eight books. There are more than sixty million of her books in print worldwide. Other titles include: Days of Gold, Lavender Morning, Return to Summerhouse, and Secrets. She resides in North Carolina with her family.

This book is part of the EDILEAN SERIES, though can be read as a stand alone novel.

In the quaint little town of Edilean, Virginia, Sara Shaw is making wedding plans, much to the distress of her family and frien...more

I love the way Jude Deveraux writes. She always uses witty, compassion, intrigue and wonderful characters. I continue to come back to her books and want to to hear the stories of the supporting characters. This book returns us to the very small and meddling Edilean, Virginia. The loner Mike comes to the town he has avoided on a case. Without realizing it the entire town is conspiring to attach to the troubled Sara Shaw. Sara is fighting everyone because they hate her fiance. She is frustrated an...more

I have a hard time reading contemporary romantic thrillers sometimes because the characters sometimes annoy me.

The main female character was pretty boring/uninteresting, so you didn't really care if she lives. (I actually liked her local 'nemesis' way more - who she derides as masculine for being able to drive a car well). We're supposed to believe she was a shy virginal girl who loved her mousy English boyfriend (she gave up a job for him), then fell for a sleazy, abusive co...more

This is the third in the Edilean series, and initially I read it out of order. Taken out of context, the book was difficult to follow. The characters are slowly developed in each book, so reading the series in order is rather important.

This book focusing on Sara and Mike read rather well. The characters slowly developed and the relationship seemed semi-realistic. The emphasis on Sara and her old fashion, such as the clothing she wore, seemed out of place. It provided some visualization but her c...more

My biggest complaint about this book is the ridiculous title. Scarlet Nights? I just can't beleive this is the best they could have come up with. It deserves better.
The story follows Mike, and undercover supercop who gets assigned to protect a very pretty victim/best friend of his sister. It sounds pretty standard but there are a couple things I really enjoyed. First, the hero of the story might be a little too perfect in a lot of ways but he's not 6'2" with a full head of lush hair. Its so ref...more

Scarlet Nights is the third book in the Edilean Series, but it can be read as a stand alone novel. I did not know this before I received the book, and if I did I probably would have never buy it, but I didn’t feel a lot of information from the previous books was missed. It was easy to get into the story, and the characters were interesting enough to grab a hold of me. Mike Newland is an undercover cop sent to a little town in Virginia called Edilean to track down a con artist named Stefan Vandlo...more

I really liked this book although the ending was a bit rushed. The story was great, I thought the concept was interesting, but it was too centered on the love affair/commitment between Mike and Sara. I know this is a romance novel, so this is expected; nevertheless, the plot would be more intriguing with more details about Greg/Stefano and his mother and their life. I had the feeling that this plot (why Sara was in danger) was a bit pushed to the side.
As already mentioned, the ending happened so...more

I am a Jude Deveraux fan through and through, and I don't think that I've ever read one of her books that I didn't like, and this one is no different.
I love that she always tells a great story as well as gives us romance novel lovers the other stuff that we like so much too!

Small Town Edilean girl, Sara Shaw is wrapped up in a criminal family and has no idea what she is in for. Good looking, courageous, and sexy Mike gets sent in by the FBI and police department to figure out what's going on an...more

Once again, Jude delivered; I have to confess I prefer her historical romances but te more she writes contemporary, the more I like it!

In this third installment of Edilean, we go back to the present and the romance is great! Mike is totally alpha male and Sara is just too cute for words (but don't mess with her, she has a very very conniving side!)
I love the people of Edilean, not one of them minds his or her own business and if they don't like someone, they'll do everything to get him out which...more

The premise for this story on the front flap looked so odd if it wasn't for an author I knew I liked, I probably would have skipped it. Heroine's fiance runs off two weeks before the wedding and her best friend's brother appears in her room through a trap door in the middle of the floor in the middle of the night and says he's moving in. However, if you stick with it, the author weaves a wonderful mystery into her suspenseful romance.

Side note on Edilean series. Start with book #2, Days of Gold...more

Há...more
