Shades of Night by R.G. Porter is a refreshing tale of old school vampires. In Krystoff and Alexandra’s world, vampires can shape shift, fly and even turn into mist when necessary. They are sexy and strong and know how to handle a sword. The Fae are magical, mystical beings who hold knowledge that must be kept secret at all costs. That means aligning themselves with certain vampires if necessary.
When I first began Shades of Night, I was instantly hooked. The story was exciting and the characters strong and powerful. I was sure that I was reading a five star book. As the book continued, I found that I was not able to hold that thought. There was a lull in the book when the dialogue seemed to become circular and the characters kept beating their heads against the same walls. In an effort to make Alexandra a strong, independent and powerful character, R. G. Porter sometimes made her seem unapproachable and even pigheaded when it came to Krystoff. His love and attraction took him over almost from the first moment, but there never seemed to be a strong connection between him and Alexandra. She never seemed to have the depth of emotion that he did. I never really felt that they were destined to be.
The ending of the book clinched my need to give the book a lower rating. The final climax was a bit anticlimactic. The characters seemed to be in little more peril than they had been in other confrontations. I read this expecting there to be more to it and then suddenly, I was on the last page without a clear picture of what exactly was accomplished and where the characters are left in regards to the dangers around them.
I believe that Shades of Night is a good start to what I hope is a series. The writing is gripping and for the most part flows naturally. The plot is designed to make a sequel a distinct possibility. I would be curious to read the next book to see if some of these issues are dealt with in a more concise way. I thank the author for a review copy and I give the book three and a half stars.

Shades of Night by R.G. Porter was an entertaining read, with an epic battle of good and evil brewing and the romance between Alexandra and Krystoff budding. While I enjoyed the story in the end, the initial framework of the world in which the story is set was not properly developed. Sometimes the first story of a series is so full of back story and explanation that you wish the characters would meet and fall in love already. This book was the exact opposite. We are thrust into the world of the novel without explanation as to where or when we are. For example, from the beginning it is clear that there are two types of vampires, but the differences between the two, are never explained. There is a Council that is never defined. Someone unfamiliar with the features of fae and vampires would have a difficult time understanding fundamental aspects of the characters.

The beginning of the story was disjointed and choppy. Not only because the mythology of the characters was not defined, but also because the point of view switches from the two main characters Krystoff and Alexandra without warning.

That being said, as the book progressed, the characters found their feet, so to speak. The dialog became easier to follow. Krystoff and Alexandra began to move in familiar patters of wooing and forging a relationship between each other, but their love story wasn't stale or forced and contrived. The love scenes between Alexandra and Krystoff were well written, but short. They did an excellent job of finding time to be alone in the midst of the rest of their problems, but did not take advantage of their aloneness. I, for one, would have liked more action between them.

Despite the difficulties in the beginning of the story, I was rooting for them to succeed in their quest and their relationship at the end of the book. It is clear that this is the first book in the series, and I am interested in seeing how the series develops. I want to see the good guys win the war.

The vampires are aware of her power as well as the secrets she's tried so very hard to protect - secrets that may prove be her complete undoing.

Her main goal is to protect herself in hopes of completing the mission set before her. Running from the enemy, she winds up in the arms of the one person she never expected to meet - a vampire named Krystoff. He's no ordinary vampire, though. He's an enforcer for his clan who must make sure that none of their laws are broken. Her chance meeting with him leaves her ruffled to the very core. Krystoff promises to protect her, no matter the cost, even if it means he must give up his life in order to do so.

Alexandra finds herself falling for Krystoff, something she knows should not be possible. He's a vampire and she's a Fae - a crossing of the species is technically taboo. Unable to refuse the stirrings of her heart, she gives in to what she feels and places her complete trust in Krystoff's hands. As opposing forces continue to circle in, it's up to them to thwart the enemies plans. Only then can they find happiness in the face of such adversity.

The premise of the book was a very unique one - one that can certainly be expanded upon much more in-depth. I liked the idea of a vampire and Fae being together very much. I do think the lore behind the vampires and it's council needed to be made a little clearer as well as that of of the Fae's true purpose.

The small insight in regards to the Exiled was also intriguing, but I confess since things weren't properly explained about who they were and how they actually got there, I kinda had 'Huh?' moment. The series has promise, though. Hopefully, the second book in the series will tie up those loose ends. All in all, I liked the book and will be reading the next book once it becomes available.(less)

Shades of Night by R.G. Porter is a dark and thrilling paranormal read. I especially loved the opening of this book. "It was feeding time and humans were the only thing on the menu." I was hooked with the first line. Overall I enjoyed Porter's writing, I just wish the relationship between Kristoff and Alexadra would've pulled me in more. At times I didn't feel like their connection was as hot as it could've been. I also felt that the writing could've been a little smoother, but I did enjoy the o...more

I have to say I enjoyed this book, the story of Kristoff and Alexadra is enchanting. The writing flowed well and I enjoyed getting to know the characters. Combining the magic of the fae and characters returning from the dead, albeit briefly, provided a twist that offered the reader a glimpse into the characters more softer sides.
