Based on a famous Spanish folk tale, this romping novella recounts the tribulations of a lecherous local magistrate as he attempts to have his way with the millers beautiful but devoted wife, with unforeseen and hilarious consequences. A unique blend of slapstick and comedy of manners, this sharp satire on the corruption of rural officials and the politics of lust and sedu...more

This story probably deserves four stars.
I do not understand enough Spanish yet to have grasped enough of the novel for me to rate it there... yet. I liked it enough that I do plan to read it again, and am happy to have taken it up as a way to further my studies of the Spanish language.

The story itself receives many comparisons to Othello, and indeed, has several similarites to the Shakespeare play. The author even points this out within the text, so I will leave it at that.

I sure there are SOME good spanish novellas for children. Unfortunetly this was not one of them.

Really, a wonderful story. I felt like I was reading a play and I was loving it. It feels like one of Shakespeare's comedies or a Cyranoesque fable. Fantastic, clever, funny. If you like stories, you'll love this.

It's one of those classic farces. Funny in simple, sincere ways. One of the best parts was that it was written in Spain's Spanish (uh, like Castellian), and has a glossary in English.
