A friend and I were visiting the Nelson-Atkins in KC and as I was walking my eyes gazed at a Rothko and was immediately transfixed. Whatever I was experiencing was beyond language, thought or emotion. I have been a huge fan of Rothko ever since.

When people ask me about "getting" Modern Art, I always explain to them that there is nothing to get. Either you like/feel/enjoy it or you don't. There is no right answer. You will know when you "get" it. No one else will be able to tell you.

The images in this book are the most accurate reproductions of Rothko's work that I have seen in bound form. The essays were not anything enlightening, but the interviews were great.
Michael
Wonderful art but I would have preferred more biographical data integrated with the prints. I suppose I should just read a Rothko biography!

Amazing collection of images

Probably the coolest thing about this book is that it covers Rothko's work chronologically, and goes back quite early, so you see how he developed over time. The page size and print quality is decent, but I would like to find a bigger and more vibrantly printed volume of Rothko's work, even if it isn't as complete.

As I was watching a quasi-documentary about Rothko, I said to the documentary (because I often speak to my t.v.), "Okay, I'm not a fan of Abstract Expressionism. Show me why I should care about Rothko."

And it did.

So now I think I like Rothko.

no art book could contain the largeness of Rothko's work. Jumps off the page, and you just wish it was even bigger.

Nothing like seeing a real Rothko, but still impressive.

Catalog to an amazing exhibit. This is about as good as you can get with a Rothko book considering the difficulty of trying to reproduce the color and scale of his work.
R.Friend
Superbly designed catalog by Margaret Bauer of the National Gallery of Art, offering a brilliant representation of Rothko's works from a landmark exhibition.

Of all my books, this is the gem of my entire library.
I couldn't like it more. Fabulous
