The Persian poet Rumi, who wrote in the 13th Century, has become increasingly popular today. This selection comes from his monumental work, The Mathnawi—perhaps the longest mystical poem ever written, containing 24,000 verses in rhyming couplets. Thanks to E.H. Whinfield’s translation and commentary, these tales—filled with Sufi wisdom, insight, and humor—are wonderfully a ...more

The problem with rating truly great classics of literature, especially Sufi literature, is that these 'polished mirrors' reflect you. What you rate is not the material itself, but your own understanding of the material, your own state of mind and heart, your own degree of spiritual insight.

It has been said with regard to the Russian Chekhov that a writer is a man 'bound by his conscience to tell the whole truth, with the objectivity and the indifference to bad smells of a chemist'. Of course, h

Bagaimanapun, catatan hujung editornya, A Fuat

Rumi: child prodigy born in Afganistan in 1207, moved to Turkey while young, founded the order of the Dervishes (Whirling Dervishes), based on the belief that dancing released the soul from the prison of the body and allowed it to join in union with the divine source.

The Mathnawi functions as a bible for the Sufis. Values include turning away from the sins of lust and pride.

It's okay-ish, not up to my expecations though. Perhaps that's because it's meant to be for young readers - obviously, I'm not one :D

Jalal ad-Din Muhammad Rumi- Mevlana Celaleddin Rumi is his full name but Mevlana is his popular name known in his homeland, Konya-Turkey. In the English-speaking world, however, he is popularly known as Rumi. He lived in the 13th century, 1207 – 1273.

The day he died is known by all in the Sufi world as Sheb-iArus, the wedding night, the night he met his Beloved. It is a well-known legend that he said these words:

“Do not cry after me.
Tonight it is my wedding night.
I am going to the Beloved.”

the cool things about rumi literature is each individual will read the same story but with different reflect upon their live.

I'm not sure whether the fault lies in the editing or translating, but this volume was quite uninspiring. It was difficult to tell how much of Rumi's original style remained in this bowdlerized version. However, the end-of-story "lessons" don't match the poetic flare that I'm familiar with from Rumi. Instead, they were often pedantic and did not lend to any comprehension of the simple tales. I suppose I will need to go elsewhere for a better understanding of the Mathnawi.

If not because of the lesson learned after each story, some of the stories may seem to be purposely left hanging.
