Unfortunately, I read this for a masters degree course and I found nothing for secondary education teachers to do to adapt this program to a non-elementary level classroom. For the most part, the entire book details how to manage your classroom to start this program, then everything else just magically falls into place. I can see why this program is popular with elementary teachers because it does set clear expectations with younger students to become more independent and gives the teacher(s) in...more

Great Book! This is a very quick read that is well-written and practical. This book offers a clear framework for implementing meaningful independent work while teachers work with guided reading or other small groups. I plan to use this book when I return to the classroom this fall. No crazy centers to maintain, just good techniques to train students how to read independently, with partners, and write independently. I'm looking forward to reading the companion book about assessment, The Cafe...more

There are quite a few ideas in this book that I'd like to incorporate into my literacy teaching for the upcoming school year. Unfortunately, I'm also left with quite a few questions. I would have liked the sections to be a bit more in depth in terms of implementation after the initial introduction of each of the daily 5 elements. Specifically, I'd like more information about setting up and maintaing individual book boxes, and the use of journals or other devices, particulary for the word work...more

I love this text! It is a great professional resource for teachers of all grades. Two sisters developed the concept of Daily Five. There classrooms are designed to foster literacy skills as well as independence. The Daily Five concept revolves around the concept of I- charts and independent student learning. This is an excellent text that helps teachers to develop student led classrooms and student led learning.

This is exactly what I needed at the exact right time. My students are already very independent and I want to continue to push them in the right direction. This book provided a structure in which to teach literacy with in the context of a workshop model - it give you room to work one-on-one or in small groups! (I know... Crazy!)

Easy read, simple instructions, provides ideas as well as launch plans. There is also a great section of Q&A troubleshooting.

I recommend this for any K-5 elementary teacher. Fast and fun read with lots of fun anectdotes. It is written by sisters that have 40 years of teaching experience between them - and they have done this daily 5 program in their classrooms. They are doing this in my district and I find its similar to traditional Reading Centers or work stations but smarter. The kids will be more independent, will be reading more, and will be working on focused strategies throughout the literacy time. Step by step...more

I have heard from teaching girlfriends in Title I schools in Beaverton that this is the best thing to hit literacy programs in a long time. I am determined to read it and be prepared for the fall!!
Update: I just finished reading this book and all I can say is that I LOVE IT! I totally coincide with the philosophy and really appreciate the step-by-step structural lessons and then day by day lay out of when to use which, in what order, with page numbers to be able to refer back to their d...more

It has been awhile since I have read professional literature and been so excited about it! The Daily 5 was an energizing read, the text was engaging and flowed nicely and the message was just what I needed! My team at school is planning on "piloting" this management system next year and we are looking forward to giving it a try. I am hopeful that my students will become more independent, self-directed learners upon implementation of these ideas, and most of all that they will spend mor...more

This book is easy to read and has a lot of great suggestions as to how to make children better readers who love to read. My only problem with this book is the huge amount of time that this book requires in order to truly implement the Daily Five. Unfortunately for me, I don't have the option to use this much time for a reading block. I have 90 minutes and 90 minutes only. I will definitely implement some of these ideas in my classroom, but I wish I could do more of the book than I can. I think I...more

phonomenal book! the sisters guide you through every aspect of using the daily 5 in your classroom. true that they have a 2 hour literacy block, however please realize that they include writing in their literacy block. i know i had a writing station, but this seems to include more writing than i incorporated. regardless, this book is easy to read and is a great asset to teachers trying to make their reading block really work!

I have read this book with several teachers at my school and it has transformed my classroom this year. All teachers have reading groups and literacy in their schedules, however this format really drives our students to improve on their reading skills. I have seen tremendous growth in my own classroom due to the practices I have used from the book.

I read this for a course I am taking, and I highly recommend it to any teacher, grades K-6, that needs a jumpstart to their Language Arts block. This system is full proof, and it assures that ALL students (even the wandering bathroom- goer), gets the time and attention they need on reading, writing and word skills.

I thought this book was an easy read, and is very applicable to the real world classroom. I am looking forward to implementing as much of the "Daily 5" as I can in my classroom this year. I can't wait to see how independent my students can be and I hope to encourage a love for reading and writing!

This book presents a great concept for organizing a classroom to develop literacy. Although there was more student independence involved than I am accustomed to, there were some good ideas I can incorporate into my classroom. This structure is also more suited to primary than it is to intermediate.

This is a great program I'd love to offer in my classroom. Unfortunately, like anything else, this books talks as if you have nothing else to teach all day. I hope to do as we teachers do with every program we like, take what I can from it and merge it in.

This is a fantastic inspirational book that provides ideas on how to transform the reading classroom into an independent, thoughtful setting where teachers are free to work with children in a very individual manner.

Great Book ! I learned that I am doing too much for workshop and not really giving my students what they really need which is time to READ. To be a better READER YOU NEED TO READ....wow...now there's a thought.
