I hate spoilers, so don't worry.
The first book in this series, The Conqueror's Shadow, was fantastic. I picked it up on a whim and am so glad I did.
I found out about the sequel accidentally, seeing it for the first time on the shelf at Barnes & Noble. I got it immediately, and am so glad I did.
The Warlord's Legacy is a fine book, though perhaps weaker in some ways than the first in the series. There's a bit of a time shift from the first book that was off-putting at first. But once I got int...more

Every fantasy fan should give Ari Marmell's books a try. He has something in his writing and story telling that is very unique and relatively unusual in the Fantasy Genre, witty sarcasm and a strong sense of humor that runs through every bit of the book. That being said, his books are far from being a comedy or a parody of the genre, it's just obvious that Ari loves Fantasy and in his own work he wants to create something different. This book stands alone so you don't have to have read the Conqu...more
I was very excited to dive into this second book of Marmell's series featuring Corvis Rebaine. I really enjoyed the first book in the series - great dialogue, interesting characters and excellent action scenes.
But at the end of The Warlord's Legacy I was disappointed. The entire tone of the book seemed off somehow and detracted from my enjoyment of it. Gone was the cast of bad guy misfits. The main characters seemed equally droll and witty but without much substance. There were some excellent co...more

I’m off the bus with this one. “The Warlord’s Legacy” (Spectra, $26, 364 pages) is the second in a series set on a typical fantasy world: pre-industrial, magic, demons and so forth. Corvis Rebaine is the anti-hero’s anti-hero, who agonizes about the evil he’s done as a conquering general, but then casually kills servants and slaves to help disguise himself. These deaths are meaningless to him, and supposedly are to be meaningless to readers as well, and yet we’re still expected to appreciate his...more
My thoughts:
This book takes places 6 years after the events in Conqueror's Shadow, and sure you can read it as a stand alone novel. But if you really want to get to the bottom of things then you should read CS first.
I do like Corvis, why? Well I do not know because I honestly should not. Over 20 years ago he brought death and destruction and killed..and then killed some more. He was one crazy warlord. Then he came back and killed some more but the point is that he always had an idea behind it. H...more

Great follow up to the first one. It was enjoyable and kept me turning the page, so would recommend to anyone to enjoys fantasy lit.
I really enjoyed this sequel to The Conqueror's Shadow. The warlord has come out of retirement, having crafted a new identity, and has tried to take up his original cause in a new and less violent way. But his legacy continues to haunt him, as the repercussions of his past deeds bear down upon him. In the end, he discovers that his truest legacy is also the one that hurts the most.

“And if, behind closed eyes, Cerris saw a face other than hers, a face so slightly younger, gazing at him sadly across a gulf of lost years and broken promises... Well, it would never hurt her if she never knew.”
