This appears to be a collection of 3 short stories by Eugenides, here's a translation of the german review above:

Paradise can beat a very nice on the stomach. What good is the most beautiful palm beach in the world of fine white sand and blue lagoon, if one is forced by a pesky intestinal infection, doze all day long in a seedy reed hut in front of him? No wonder that the alternative tourist and backpacker Mitchell on the remote island in the Gulf of Siam comes to mind quite miraculous.

Is this only published in german and if so WHY???
One of the best, most succinct short stories I have ever read. Even before I had read Middlesex or even heard of Eugenides, I read this in a best short story collection and was blown away. It is a masterpiece. Even if you don't like his other work, read this.
