I received a copy of A Girl Named Mister through GoodReads.com’s FirstReads giveaway program. One point in this book’s favor: it is a quick and easy read. (I breezed through it in about two hours.) This is due to the fact that the book is written in verse, so even though it is 223 pages in length, consider the fact that about 50% of each page is clean...more

I'm not a poetry person. When I was younger, I tried my hand at writing some poems because I wanted to be a writer. I started off with the poems with correct syllables and enough rhymes, and then I graduated to free verse poems which didn't have the same poetic tone that other poems I read do. When I got to college and joined our literary folio, I decided that I am not a poet, and while I appreciate some poems every now and then, I would really rather read prose.

This book was actually much better than I thought. When I heard this book was filled with nothing but poetry I was a bit nervous about opening this book. I mean, I do like poetry, but it normally doesn't hold much interest for me. However, with this book it was much different. I opened it up, and didn't put it down until I finished the very last page. Even though it took me a scant hour to read the book's entirety I found myself taken on a special journey. With poetry about both Mister and Mary...more
There are no words to describe how extraordinary Nikki Grimes is.
I got a lot from this book, though I must say that I am glad that this same situation has not presented itself to me, and hopefully it shall not.
I liked how perfect Mister seemed at the beginning of this book; the most defining trait of her being her 'pureness' until she wasn't.
Let me just fume about Trey for a bit though. I hate him, he's a player with too much game for me to put up with. "I pity the fool," (Mr. T) and yes, I am...more

I read this today, this morning, while I drank my coffee. :) It's a very fast book, even for a slower reader I'm sure.
I hadn't any plans to read this actually although I have heard of Nikki Grimes before I didn't have any of her books on my to-read list. I was walking through the library and hauling a huge stack of books I'd already checked out for Julia (with a few for myself) when I noticed this for whatever reason. Nikki Grimes is a New York Times bestselling author. She has written more than fifty books and is also the winner of a Coretta Scott King Award, an NCTE Award, and has been on the Notable Books list of the American Library Association many times. "A Girl Named Mister" is another example of Nikki Grimes' ability to use poetry to tell a powerful and moving story that will touch everyone who reads it.

With the man character being a highly religious girl with a purity ring, this book could have been a good way to educate about birth control and deal with the reality that people have sex. Instead it just uses fear-mongering at an attempt to encourage abstinence. It reinforces the belief of adults that everyone under 18 is an idiot. It reinforces the lies told to teens that no matter what you do, if you have sex before marriage horrible things will happen. This book is just bad for everyone.

I just happened to pick this book up around Christmas without realizing the Christmas message it incorporated. (That's what happens when you don't read the jacket!) Typical of Nikki Grimes it is a beautiful novel written in free verse. The story alternates between the voice of a current day 14 year old teen - Mary Rudine (also called Mister for M.R.) who becomes pregnant and the voice of teenage Mary, mother of Jesus, as written in a book of poetry that is loved by Mister's mother. Mister is int...more
Mary Rudine: First it was Mary, then it was M.R. Mister is all anybody calls me now… Mister wears a purity ring. She has made the choice to save herself for the man she marries, but then she meets Trey and finds out that a commitment to abstain from sex can be more difficult to keep than she thought.

A novel in verse, we see a young Christian girl, Mary known as Mister to her friends, as she makes choices and lives with the consequences. Helping her deal is a book of poems written about Mary, the mother of God. Seeing Mary as a young woman facing the challenging situation of her own and relying on God to get her through, this Mary can cope with the truths revealed in her life.

Although it has an interesting premise, this book is painful to read. Mary Rudine, a.k.a M.R. a.k.a Mister, is a good Christian girl who gets pregnant. Feeling ashamed and shunned by God, she turns to a book called "Mary, Mary." In it, Mary, mother of Jesus, describes being pregnant and unwed. The book flips POVs from Mary to MR as both their pregnancies advance.

Mary Rudine, nicknamed Mister because of her initials, has always been a “good girl.” She attends church every Sunday, sings in the choir, and does well in school. When she meets Trey the feelings she has for him throw her for a loop and she forgets the promise she made to God to save herself for marriage. She thinks she loves Trey and has sex with him. After she ends up pregnant, he abandons her. Feeling all alone, she begins to question whether God still loves her. She discovers a book of poet...more

Mary Rubin, also known as "Mister" for her initials M.R., is a good girl. She sings in the church choir, is a star player on the volleyball team, and goes to church every Sunday. Then she meets Trey, a good looking, smooth-talking guy, and she gives in to temptation. She turns to her mother's book of poetry about Mary, the mother of Jesus, to comfort her about the choices she's made and to help her through everything that follows.

Nice Christian girl gets pregnant is not a new plot line, but Nikki Grimes's poetry gives fresh insights into an all-too-familiar story. Poetry touches emotions in a way that prose often misses. "Ankle deep,/my faith a thing/ I wade in now and then." Mary Rodine (MR) takes courage from a book of poems about the Virgin Mary, facing the same physical changes and stigma of an unexpected pregnancy as Mister.

Fourteen-year-old Mister (short for M.R., which is in turn short for Mary Rudine) has promised not to have sex before marriage; however, her devotion to church and to her promise wavers when she meets Trey. Soon, she has broken her promise and finds herself pregnant. Seeking comfort and guidance, she turns to a book of poems told from the perspective of Mary, the mother of Jesus, who is dealing with an unexpected pregnancy as well.

This book was interesting, but it didn't keep me hooked. I was also skeptical of the story about Mary (I am Christian and some of it doesn't add to what I know)...don't attack me please! I'm just putting my honest opinion out here.
I did like Mister, I just wasn't sure of her choices all the time and I didn't love her, which made the story that much harder to get through. I think this could've been written better...maybe with a more complicated plot to make it more interesting?

Mary Rudine, known by the nickname Mister, is very faith driven, Christian 15 year old who makes one big mistake. As a baby develops inside of her, the father now long gone, she finds herself reading the book Mary, Mary about the pregnancy of the Virgin Mary. As she reads about Mary's experiences of pregnancy, uncertainty and faith, she rediscovers herself. Believable, touching, and I really liked the end. You could feel her emotional pain and uncertainty, yet were left with a feeling of hope.
Excellently written free verse tells the story of Mary Rudine, also known as a girl named Mister. She struggles with her vow to be pure to God and wavers when she meets Trey. Her story is entertwined with that of Mary, mother of God. Powerful missive on many levels--faith, relationships (not just of Trey and Mister--the relationships between Mister and her best friend as well as Mister and her mother are also a major focus in this story) and major decisions that need to be made as part of growin...more
Mary Rudine (M.R. or Mister for short) is a typical Christian teen, but gives in to temptation when a smooth-talking boy starts paying attention to her. Her guilt nearly overwhelms her, but she finds comfort and inspiration in a book about Mary, the mother of Christ. This novel in verse realistically handles a teen's spiritual struggles.
On the Kindle, it was not always immediately clear which poems were in Mister's voice and which were in Mary's. Perhaps the print version does a better job...

Short novel in verse about a Christian girl who has sex, regrets it, and then discovers she's pregnant. The story of "Mister" (M.R.) is interspersed with the story of the Virgin Mary as she awaits the birth of Jesus. It works. Not sure who I would recommend it to -- Christian kids might be scandalized by the fact that Mister has sex, but then maybe they should read this to see that not everyone who does it before marriage is a "bad" person. Mister struggles, but her faith is what gets her throug...more
I really enjoyed this short book. Written in prose form, it is the story of a young girl dealing with her faith and her sexuality, inter-laced with Mary's own story as she prepared for the birth of Jesus.
I read the whole thing in a few hours, and although the format of the book is unconventional, it flowed perfectly and I felt the whole story was told in so few words, so completely.
I'd recommend it for mothers of teen girls, to read first, and then perhaps read together...and discuss.

Fascinating methodology -- each chapter a poem, in first voice of young girl who got pregnant and in first voice of Mary, supposedly from her diary -- each have to deal with the fact that they are having a baby -- MR is in school, and not married. Mary is betrothed to an older man, Joseph, and is pregnant -- difficult times for each. (This was another free Kindle download.) I like this -- both for its presentation and for the thoughts of each "girl."
This book was surprisingly good, although I am not sure I would completely label it "teen fiction." Alot of it cannot be appreciated until you have been pregnant yourself/partner or have experienced quite a bit of life. It's well written, and the intertwining of the two pregnancies in the book compliment each other. One story makes you appreciate the other all the more.

In poetic verse, Nikki Grimes tells the story of Mister, a young girl who gets pregnant shortly before her 14th birthday. Despite her promise to keep pure until marriage, she falls for Trey.

Very quick read (novel in verse) about a pregnant teenage girl who finds solace in a book of poetry about Mary. I was surprised to see that this book was being published by a Christian publisher - because of this I was leary of prosthelytizing - turns out that I didn't need to worry. I actually really liked the poetry about Mary - it reminded me of an extremely condensed and accesible version of "The Red Tent."
Nikki Grimes adds the voice of a young teenager to a relative void of protagonists dealing with her reality quite simply. Mister tells her experience in humble, noble prose, with a few alternating similarly written journal poem of Mary in the time leading up to Jesus' birth. This gives Mister a route to restore her faith and find middle ground between God's rules and her violation of them.
Nikki weaves such a beautiful story of a common struggle. She so eloquently combines biblical stories with the real life struggle of a modern teenager. With so few words, she pulls us towards the main character and into her story as if we were this young girl struggling to maintain a life of faith and promise while confronted with desire.
I admire Nikki's talent and art. I recommend this book to anyone, but especially to young girls who might find themselves in similar situations.
