I always say I don't like chick lit (and movies). That's not entirely true. What I don't like about chick lit (and movies) is that moment near the end where it gets awkward and embarrassing and then it gets cheesy and embarrassing. And I'm left gagging and my whole enjoyment of the tension the first half is ruined. But if the story could skip over the awkward and cheesy phases and go straight to happy ending, well then I could like said chick lit (or movie). As evidence I enter exhibit A.

Another one of Melissa Nathan's retellings of Jane Austen, this one, based on "Persuasion," doesn't have the zip of "Pride, Prejudice and Jasmine Field," but retains many trademarks of the author's witty dialogue and hilarious characters.[return][return]Through a misunderstanding, college sweethearts Annie and Jake are torn apart with much bitterness. Years later, they are thrown back together when Jake is hired to save the company owned by Annie's spendthrift family, and boy is it awkward. Misu...more

Initially I thought that this book was about a woman, hardened by the betrayal of her now ex boyfriend who she loved dearly. At the advice of her nosy but loving family, she breaks up with him and focuses on improving the family business, which has gone down the tubes. Years pass, she becomes the head of the business, taking advice from her doting father and is trying to make it all work when Jake walks back into her life with the intention of getting her back.

I didn't expect to see that my "her...more

I liked this one even better than Nathan's Pride and Prejudice rewrite! This one is Persuasion; this still has some, ah, interesting narrative choices by the author, but I'd say it's cleaner than the Pride and Prejudice was--still a little bit of language, but not as much; still some references to sex, but not as many, and still not explicit. So, on the clean side of most modern chic lit.

Before I read it, I read a review saying that one reader liked this one less because they didn't care very m...more

Once upon a time....the beautiful, auburn headed, vivacious teenager Annie Markham had an awful scare. She thought that she was pregnant. And when she shared this bit of news with her teen boyfriend, Jake...he turned an unbecoming shade of puce, yelled out a panicky speech and promptly fainted. Vivacious Annie should have seen this as a prologue for things to come. But when she discovered that she wasn’t really pregnant, she told Jake again. The gallant Jake promptly turned a slimy shade of gree...more

I can't remember the last time I laughed so hard over a book. Or maybe because I've been feeding myself with emotionally draining stories more than I should, this one is indeed a welcome change. It has been a while since I last read chick flick. While I don't particularly love chick flick, this one was worth the energy, the time, yadda yadda. You get the drill. If you need to de-stress or read something light for a chance, then read Persuading Annie.

One thing that bugged me though, I feel Annie...more

Once upon a more recent time, Annie Markham is a beautiful young lady. She has a heart of gold, works at a local art gallery, moonlights as a phone Samaritan and seems to be the only sensible duckling in an eccentric self-absorbed family of pretentious swans. But the bouncing curls and witty facade hide an embittered soul. Annie has never really got over Jake’s abrupt departure from her life and he continues to colour all her interactions with the opposite sex.

But Annie has more pressing proble...more

I remember really enjoying one of Melissa Nathan's books...I think it was called "The Waitress" or something like that, so I figured Persuading Annie would be a fun one to read while I was on vacation. Persuasion, the book Persuading Annie is based on, is one of my all-time favorites so I had some high hopes for this book, but I was pretty much let down. Obviously, I had a pretty good idea of how everything was going to play out from the very beginning due to my knowledge of Persuastion, but eve...more

I don't set out to read chick-lit (oy, that phrase), but sometimes I pick it up, and see where it takes me. I chose this one because it's a retelling of Jane Austen's Persuasion, and have to say that mostly it was a matter of curiosity. Would this lady get it right? While I believe she could make Jake and Annie (Wentworth and Anne) have a more unique and powerful connection (what about their relationship haunts Annie? Specifically?), and wish that she understood that writing something in all cap...more

Funny, light hearted and enchanting, Melissa Nathan's spin on Jane Austen's Persuasion is delightful.
Ever since Acting Up, M. Nathan has been one of my favorite romantic comedy writers and this one just adds to her credit.
Persuading Annie involves a 26 year old art lover Annie Markham, the youngest daughter of the illustrious Markham family. Her widower father, George and two older sisters, Katherine and Victoria form the primary cast of this book. Katherine, a 30 something party animal...more

Because it was English, easy to read and there was this connection with the original Jane Austen's "Persuasion" (which I read some weeks ago), I loved it. And Melissa Nathan's style was so fresh and light and at the same time sarcastic (although she was not so mean with her heroine like Austen was).

Although there are some characters I didn't like and some actions I couldn't see as credible, the main characters, incl. Cass, Annie's sister Victoria and her husband, Charles, were very interesting a...more

When she thought she was pregnant, nineteen-year-old Annie Markham and her college sweetheart, Jake Mead, happily decided to elope to Paris. However, on the night of their intended departure Annie discovers it was just a false alarm; and when she tries telling Jake this he jumps to the wrong conclusion and assumes the worst of her, launching them both into a bitter argument. Since that fateful day Annie and Jake have not seen or heard from each other. Seven years later, when the Markham's family...more

I really enjoyed this one. I have to admit that the plot is pretty regular for a chick-lit novel, but what makes it special is Melissa's style of writing. Although we meet loads of characters throughout the novel, Annie has a fabulous and unique personality and Melissa really gets inside her head. Annie is a very witty character and what made me pick this book up every day when I got home from school were the hilarious comments intersperced throughout the plot. Yes, the storyline is pretty avera...more

It's pretty easy to see the parallels between the original Jane Austen novel and this book, but I think this one didn't work as well for me as Nathan's other retelling. The problem I had was I never really fully bought into Annie and Jake, because at the beginning of the novel, when we see them as young and scared, I guess I didn't see much chemistry between them or reasons why they were together. Later when the two reconnected, I was haunted by the earlier impression. On top of that, Annie's pe...more

I love humor. I find myself constantly choosing to view life through its lens which always seems like the better seat and produces a more colorful picture. I guess that's why I'm always surprised by my feelings of disappointment when I read a "funny" book and I don't think it is nearly as funny as it could or should be.

Persuading Annie is one of those books. A supposed modern take on Jane Austen's not funny but wonderfully intelligent Persuasion, Melissa Nathan desecrates everything that makes...more

I'm a sucker for Jane Austen and Persuasion is one of my favorites so when I saw this I knew I had to read it. I must say I thoroughly enjoyed the retelling of the story. My only complaint was I wish we would have seen a little more of the relationship at the beginning between Annie and Jake but I know that is a lot like the original Persuasion. I enjoyed the side stories as well especially Charles and Victoria. Definitely looking forward to reading this authors Pride and Prejudice retelling as...more

Cute, modern retelling of Jane Austen's 'Persuasion' (which happens to be my second most favorite Austen book). While there's some language I didn't appreciate, it was limited and a clean story otherwise. I had some trouble keeping characters in order in my mind (they had different names than the original) and she added some new ones that added to the chaos. For the most part, it was an enjoyable read. Just don't expect it to beat the original--not even close!

I never read Jane Austen's 'Persuasion' but I really don't think that would've helped. I thought the characters were selfish and (sometimes) mean-spirited. The main characters, Annie and Jake, were weak and uninteresting. The ending was especially bad. I read the book, hoping it would get better and to see how it would end, as all romances usually end "happily". The ending could've been a lot more climactic but it was a big letdown.

Upon my re-read, I was surprised to find that I had forgotten or perhaps chosen to ignore the more misogynistic paragraphs which became glaringly obvious by the end of the book. I still enjoyed the book thoroughly but these little asides of calling women "whores" here and there really irked me by the end. However, all in all it was a fun light book that was touching and sweet. Highly recommend!

Got this one from an Oxfam bargain bin which ought to have been a clue, I suppose. I've read Nathan's other books and found them reasonably good fun. This seemed the perfect change from all the fantasy I've been reading of late. And here, at least, it succeeded. It was different. Still, girl gets boy in the end and that still makes me happy!

I was really excited to read this book for two reasons. 1) I love remakes of Jane Austen stories and 2) I enjoyed this author's remake of Pride and Prejudice, entitled Pride Prejudice and Jasmine Field. However, this remake of Persuasion was lackluster. Little creativity, and the characters were way off the mark in my opinion.

I kept leaving and coming back to this book which I think may give some idea as to how much it grabbed my attention.
The story itself was pretty good; a family in trouble asking for help from someone who just happened to date one of the family members and all the entwining of business and personal lives that such a thing involves and creates.
To be honest, the overall ending of the book, or at least one part of it, could be seen coming from about 2/3's the way through the book and I don't think th...more

It's about a bunch of stuck up superficial snobs. What keeps the story readable is Annie and Jake.

Annie has always felt like she was adopted as she feels and is different to them.

Her father's firm is in trouble and they need to take some desperate measures to try and rescue it.

I think I have come to the conclusion that Jane Austen and Jane Austen-esq books are not my thing. I try! In this case, I didn't hate the book (and think I would have enjoyed it more if I hadn't just seen the movie) but the characters kinda made me nuts. The sister Victoria! I know she was supposed to, but it was to the point that I was frustrated with all the other characters for putting up with her. Annie seemed so contradictory- shy and easily influenced in one scene, upfront and strong in an...more

I like this book - a nice, diverting beach read. I think it would be a pretty good audio book, too, so I'm going to have to remember that for the future. But at the end of the day, it is a retelling of Persuasion that just makes me want to read the original.

This book purports to be a modern day version of Jane Austen's Persuasion and there are many similarities--the heroine's family members are awful, there is a similar series of events, a con man attempts to woo the heroine, etc. But Annie, based on Austen's Anne, is not at all like her namesake in the original novel, and for that I did not enjoy this book. I love Anne Elliot's character and didn't like seeing her turn into a mean, weak counterpart in this novel. It is likely my fault for picking...more

I still love the nanny better than this book, even though this is based off my favorite austen novel. i kind of hated the characters in the beginning, but was determined to finish... but by the end it really picked up. I do love a good mystery!

The only thing I don't like about this really fun book is how young the hero is.... He's only been out of school for a few years and he's already a top independent management consultant? That note of unreality was too jarring for me.

Melissa Jane Nathan (13 June 1968 – 7 April 2006) was a journalist and UK author of popular "chick lit" novels in the early 2000s.
When working on Persuading Annie (2001), Nathan was diagnosed with breast cancer. She refused to let the illness dominate her life, and - in public anyway - was unfailingly positive. She had no time for most journalism written by cancer sufferers: "self-indulgent dirges...more
