I don't know quite how this book came my way - unless it is that the author is from Austin TX and was blanketing the area. But I liked it. Main character Maebelle T. Earl is fiesty and fun. Her fmaily are real characters - oddballs, even. The plot is a bit far-fetched - but the idea of living in an old family mansion that may have played a role in the Underground Railroad is intriguing - and possible. I really liked this story about Maebelle T. (for no talent) Earl and her eccentric, but lovable, family. Maebelle is so excited to be spending the summer with her Grandma and Grandpa in the old family mansion they've inherited in Georgia, and she needs this time to process that she won't be in the Gifted and Talented program at her school this coming year. Maebelle T Earl is a southern ray of sunshine! This lovable character is feisty, outgoing and so fun to get to know. The story is centered on her spending the summer, like she always does, with her heartwarming, eccentric grandparents, and her adopted cousin Isaac. I adored her grandparents and fell in love with Isaac. This poor kid broke my heart. He's a character I really came to admire, and though he's only a secondary character, he really stole the show for me.

I love a good children's book. Lots of unknown facts and useless trivia at the beginning of each chapter. A cute story with cute characters and a good message.
