This is a really inspiring book to read if you are stuck at a point in life and wonder if you are where you need to be, if you are down and need a good kick to get moving again and appreciate life again. Alda gives lots of speeches at college commencements, and it seems like someone is always asking him to give meaning to their life. I loved how eloquently he spoke for example....

This book pulls out all the stops and sets your emotions rolling. I cried during the chapter about 9/11 when a lady in Kansas not knowing what else to do baked a cake or the gentleman who said what they really missed at ground zero was something as simple as a candy bar. You could feel the immense feeling of being overwhelmed by all of the people represented in this chapter.

In the spirit of full disclosure, Alan Alda has always reminded me of my own father; As such, I think I would enthusiastically applaud his reading of the yellow pages. I knew that Mr. Alda was a talented actor and his turns in M*A*S*H, ER, and West Wing always thrilled me, but I didn't realize how multi-faceted he really is until this book. He was funny and introspective and provocative and warm. His words made me think: Is my life meaningful and what IS my definition of a meaningful life? I...more

On the heels of his acclaimed memoir, Never Have Your Dog Stuffed, beloved actor and bestselling author Alan Alda has written Things I Overheard While Talking to Myself, an insightful and funny look at some of the impossible questions he’s asked himself over the years: What do I value? What, exactly, is the good life? (And what does that even mean?)

Alan Alda and New York City almost go hand-in-hand. I picked up the book out of curiosity. Never a huge M*A*S*H fan but my attention always focused on Mr. Alda when I did watch it, I wanted to read what he had to say.
The book is mostly made up of his many college speakings. I found his lead into or followup of an engagement more interesting than the speech.

Originally, my experience and knowledge of Alan Alda came from M*A*S*H, so to learn that his acting continued outside of this series, while unsurprising, is still immensely fascinating for me. It seems that there are few raconteurs left that achieve media exposure. Peter Ustinov was a supreme example: able to relate stories that were funny, clever, educational, heart-warming and incredibly interesting. For me, Alan Alda is another such raconteur, whether that be in literary form or while bein...more

If Alan Alda had asked me if writing a book based around speeches he's given was a good idea, I would have 1) been amazed that he knew who I was, and 2) said that yes, that sounded like clever angle. In reality, though, they don't transfer that interestingly to a reader or a listener (I listened to Alda charmingly read it on audiobook). I loved hearing his theatre/TV/film stories and the insights related to those (living with celebrity, knowing fiery personalities like Anne Bancroft, etc.). Inte...more

I listened to this on CD on a road trip this past weekend. I was astounded at the number of times Alan Alda has spoken at commencement exercises or other public forums. A lot of the book was excerpts from these "talks" he had given. I enjoyed it, though some aspects of his life he repeated many times (like his mother being schizophrenic). Not that that is a problem, but listening to it it came off as being repetitive. If I had actually been reading the book I would have highlighte...more

I really love Alan Alda. Not sure why, he's just a likeable sort of fellow. I was pretty excited to read his book, and slightly disappointed when I finished it. The book is centered around different speeches Alda has given at various ceremonies, and while I would be very entertained if I was actually present at one of these ceremonies, and probably stirred to some sort of action, reading them didn't give me that same feeling.

Got it from the library -- want a copy so I can underline all the funny and so-true quotes.
On the back of the book it says it's a great celebrity memoir, and that's true.
He's a great guy who could be a total snot and totally reclusive now that he's showing his age, BUT he doesn't! What a cool guy. Humble, honest, out there -- way out there; on top of mountains, interviewing all kinds of "little" people who are interesting. And funny -- oh so funny -- with heart.

I listened to this as a audio book recently. I recommend it. It is a thoughtful and humorous book. Alan Alda talks about speeches he has given at various odd venues throughout the years (i.e. schools, in front of med students, historians interested in George Washington, etc.). He also talks some about his days with MASH, but that's not what the book'ss about...it's really about a quest to find the meaning of life. Give it try and find out for yourself. The audiobook is narrated by Alan Alda hims...more

I listened to this one on audiobook, read by Alan Alda himself. I found it really inspirational. Initially, I wasn't too keen on it, because the first 2 chapters or so are chiefly commencement speeches, but once I got the rhythym of this book, I enjoyed it a lot. I found Alda's insights interesting and provocative, and somewhere along the way, I went from thinking "ho-hum" about the content to being engaged, and being personally challenged. Of course, listening to this has catapult...more

This is more a collection of speeches and Alda's thoughts about life events than a true memoir. While I don't agree with his worldview, I can't argue that he has a good heart and a desire to improve the world. It was worth the read to learn about one of the actors who captivates me (still!) in his very human and honest characters. Due to the nature of the book (speeches), it did take a while to read because after one or two chapters (with usually one speech per chapter) I needed a break. Worth t...more

I love Alan Alda, so I can't be objective. I've had a crush on him since, Idk, 1976, when I was like, five years old.
However, I think "Never Have Your Dog Stuffed" was more interesting in terms of being about him and challenges he's faced. This was more, words of wisdom he has and things he's learned. Great stuff, but for those looking for more specifics, other than the extremely moving anecdotes about 9/11 and some family stories, this is more speeches than sharing.

This was a book that I kept in my bag to read on my lunch hour. It was the kind of book that is best in small pieces. That way I had time to digest Alan's thoughts throughout the day. He took a long time to come to the point that enjoying life is the purpose of life. That is what made the book worth reading, anyone could just print that on a card or stitch it in a pillow, being included as a guest on the journey that helped him to realize that important truth was a luxury.

My feelings are utterly influenced by my long-term crush on Alan Alda - stick him and Steve Martin in a blender and you have a creepy mix of either my ideal husband or Father. I said it was creepy! Collections of random writings by actors are not usually top of my hit parade but I found his collected speeches to be particularly well written and thoughtful. As someone who ponders "What does it all mean?" often, it was a nice light snack of philosophy.

Couldn't get through this one. I still may try to listen to the rest of it on another road trip, but rather than pearls of wisdom, it just sounded like some guy talking about the many things that had happened in his life - jobs, conversations, marriage and kids. If I told you about my life, you'd be like, "Why is he telling me this?" because it's just a normal life. Turns out Alan Alda is just a normal person too despite the acting career.

MASH fans, people who like musing about the meaning of life
This was a good solid book. Easy to read, but left me with lots to think about. Alan Alda seems to get invited to give speeches all the time. So this book is basically an expansion of or reflection on the speeches he's made at funerals and graduations, etc., over the years. And it all circles around his definitions of "the meaning of life." Good stuff. He's a neat guy. He'd be fun to have dinner with.

Picking up where Never have your dog stuffed left of, this is top comedy gold! Alda is so funny, even when he's not actively going for the laugh. People don't understand that "dying is easy and comedy's hard". At least none of the writers I went to college with who thought their work was funny. I know funny and you sir are funny, and those college hacks were not. though they had funny hair and clothes.

Sexy Beast Alan Alda has let me down for the first time in my life!!!! I thought I could depend on him, but I was WRONG. This book was pathetic. Pretty much him talking about how wonderful he is and how he use to give a lot of speeches at prestigious college graduations only because he was a famous actor. LAME. I am not even going to finish it.
