This is a great collection of short stories and introduced me to a lot of classic American authors that I hadn’t previously read. The readings by various actors were highly enjoyable and brought more life to the stories. They range from humorous to horrifying to thought-provoking, and I enjoyed each in a different way. In order of preference:

• John Sayles: "At the Anarchists’ Convention"
• Amy Tan: "Rules of the Game"
• Eudora Welty: "Why I Live at the P.O."
• Donald Barthelme: “Game”
• Edgar Allen

This is one of the best audiobooks I've ever heard. Many of the stories are incredibly funny and some deeply scary.
The actors matched with each story are amazing. I loved every minute of it.

Jerry Stiller's reading of The Anarchists' Convention is a must hear.

I don't usually enjoy audiobooks, but these short stories were great. Each one was told by an actor, and the actor chosen to read each story was spot on. Particularly hilarious: "The Anarchists' Convention," written by John Sayles and read by Jerry Stiller.

Recommends it for: Amy Tan fans
The first two short stories are very good. Rules for the Game by Amy Tan and Game by Donald Strathairn are highly recommended, however stop reading/listening after that. In fact, I've never read anything by Amy Tan before and after listening to her story about the interesting relationship between a chess champion and her helicopter mom I would definitely want to read more of her stories or novels.

This collection has introduced me to 2 of my favorite short stories that I've read/heard all year! I absolutely loved Amy Tan's "Rules of the Game" and Donald Barthelme's "Game." I also enjoyed being exposed to other great authors, such as Joyce Carol Oates, John Cheever, and Alice Walker.

I didn't get through all of the stories, because it had a hold at the library, but all I listened to were very good, and the readers were great. I especially liked Christine Baranski's reading of Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been? by Joyce Carol Oates.

There were two stories in this series which were just creepy and nearly ruined the book for me. But the rest were wonderful - particular one by Alice Walker and, best of all, Jerry Stiller reading "At the Anarchist's Convention." Worth the price of the CD alone.
