"An old man suffering from the implacable advance of Alzheimer's is found dead, an empty morphine vial by his side: obviously suicide. Or did someone - a loving son, perhaps, help him die? Who would blame him? But Graham Russo insists that he had nothing to do with his father's death. A claim, that as more and more incriminating evidence comes to light, even his lawyer, Hardy, finds increasingly hard to believe. But despite his unease about his engaging but unreliable client, Hardy knows th...more
Another great legal procedural from JL. Dismas by this time has won two clients freedom from murder charges and is gaining quite a bull dog reputation. But he has promised Franny that he will do no more murder cases, strictly calm boring legal issues.
But Dismas's life just doesn't work that way and before he blinks he is mired in another murder case...or is it that cut and dried? Is this a case of assisted suicide? Now that his client is absolutely refuting the claim that he had anyth...more

I have been a fan of John Lescroart since the first book of his that I read. I like the idea of having characters which recur in subsequent books--even ones like Dismas Hardy and Abe Glitsky, who are at times seriously flawed.
This is probably the longest of his novels, and quite entertaining with many twists and turns. The villains are villanous, and the hero not always heroic.

My mind wanders when I'm reading this book ... character development not what it should be. Perhaps that will change ... I'm 100 pages into the book -- and it's taken me over 2 weeks to get to that point ... not a good sign for me who can polish off a book in a couple of days.
Lawyer/cop assisted suicide vs. homicide vs. suicide drama. Readable. I especially appreciated the evocation of place, as the story is centered in San Francisco. Readable. Grishom wannabe.
I think I read this one before, but the writing flowed and the plot twists kept me going to the end. Less about Diz/Abe/Frannie than about SF/baseball/fishing. And murder trials.
I think I'd better mark this one done as "abandoned", I just can't get into the story at all. I like the premise, I just don't find myself wanting to read this book.
Pretty good throughout the pre-trial and trial portion. The ending was kind of a copout. I don't want to give it away, but the finish just seemed to be tacked on for closure.
John Lescroart does not disappoint. A very good book, where you are rooting for the young man who did not (you hope) kill his father, even though his father was suffering.
1st one of Lescroart in a long time.
A Lawyer is accused of killing his father. A police detective believes in him and Dismas defends him
Good read

Good read
Wow - what an ending! You sure don't expect it but it is a let down. Sort of a lot of characters to keep straight but not too bad.
he's no harry bosche but I'm starting to like Dismas Hardy. Good crime writing and realistic storylines
excellent crime thriller. by the time I got to the end I suspected even myself. good writer
Lescroart is one of my favourite authors. This was a great book, like everything he writes!
Excellent mystery fiction set in San Francisco. Main character is a lawyer, Dismas Hardy.
I am a loyal reader. If I like one of these author's books, I tend to read them all. He lives up to good read status most of the time.
Interesting subject matter in the Dismas Hardy series, another of the trial books with once again excellent character development. I enjoyed this one.
Not as good as Nothing but the Truth but still a good read if you like legal mysteries.
Full of intrigue. One of the best who-dunnit's I have ever read.
Maybe my favotite of this author's mystery novels.
Didn't know who done it until the very last. Great read.
I thought the ending could of been jazzed a bit more.
Pretty good book! Worth reading...
Good read!
dismiss hardy 1998
very good as usual!
This was a long one, but almost up to the end I wasn't sure who had 'done it'.
Lescroart's books are a mystery to me. They aren't thrilling or amazing. But, I have yet to pick up one and not get sucked into the story before I even know it. The Mercy Rule is no different. Former cop, bartender and now lawyer, Dismis Hardy nearly accidentally gets a client charged with the murder of his father who was fatally ill with a Do Not Resuscitate order. Lescroart's books are so complete and just plain good stories and this one is no different.
Enjoyed the book.
Mercy killing story -- twists and turns. Justice system questioned.
