These took me forever to get through, and in all honesty I could not finish the second book. The blurb descriptions are misleading, also. Rake's Ransom is not so much about politics as about family and neighbors. And Loyal companion is partially narrated by a dog, but might as well be a carbon copy of Rake's ransom. Now I like Barbara Metzger's writing, these two just weren't what I wanted to read at the moment, I suspect. I'll keep reading her - but I probably wont be rereading these.

Both of these contain all that I love most about Barbara Metzger - humor, colorful characters, enchanting children and pets that are not only contribute to the humor, but also often serve as deus ex machinas. This is especially true in 'Loyal Companion' where Fitz the dog has his own voice and chapters.
