I love this book, I only give it 4 stars because Yeats cobbled it together from better oral story tradition experts and basically stuck in a bunch of flowery prose that made it a little bit difficult to trudge through, even for the time period. Also, did you know that he fell in love with a woman in college and then later with her daughter? You won't find that in this book, I'm just sharing.

This book was one of the first books I ever owned for myself. My great-grandfather used to tell me stories out of it before I could read them myself, and when I figured out that I could read them on my own without waiting for him to visit I was ecstatic! I am currently working on my third or fourth edition of the book...having had the misfortune of "lending" it out to people who "forget" to return it.

Really enjoyable. And I'm hard to please with Irish folklore stuff. Very picky. Very skeptical. These read as very authentic and many of the people are excellent storytellers. Lots of Irish language thrown in.

There is the usual condescension toward the peasantry found in many collections such as this, but it's not overwhelming.

Yes, another Irish flavored entry on my shelves! I'm doing my "homework" before visiting Ireland this summer. It's fun to read these old tales, especially with the old-style presentation. You can just about hear the stories being told. Can't say that I "get" them all but it's an entertaining read!

I loved this collection. Even though it's large, the stories are short, making it easy to maintain focus. I liked the ending stories which were variations on common fairy tales. I also learned more about fairies and their myths earlier on in the book.

I've been reading this book for years but haven't been able to finish it yet. Don't get me wrong, it's interesting and entertaining but I just haven't gotten into it sufficiently.

recommends it for: if you believe in faeries, mean ones
Strange, random and without traditional plot, these stories and poems seem like faerie stories you would hear someone tell, of their own encounters.
