I used this story in our "Library Tour / Book Care" introductory story time primarily because the coloring sheet I had prepared for the craft segment featured Mr. Wiggle. In my opinion the book is text heavy and the verse is forced and the message is fairly heavy handed. I prefer to simply show children books that have been damaged, asking what they notice about the book (torn pages, scribbles, goo, chewing, etc.). I captioned the coloring page "What makes Mr. Wiggle happy?", so we talked about...more
This is a great book that talks about all sorts of bad things we shouldn't do to our library books. The kindergartners, first graders, and second graders all seemed interested and engaged in the story. They loved reminding me of all the bad things that happened to Mr. Wiggle's book, and afterward we went over items that are good and bad friends to books (e.g., markers are bad friends, while bookmarks are good friends). The end didn't flow as well when reading it out loud and I wish there had bee...more
My brother and I used to love to take and retake this book out of the pleasingly old-fashioned library in the next town over. The version of it we got was a lot older-looking than this one, and Mr. Wiggle looked more like a gentle, bookish old man worm than the dorky, recently-hired school band director worm pictured above. My brother would make me read the book to him many times over in a trembly, high-pitched voice. The text is essentially a tearful diatribe recounting past acts of vandalism t...more
This book is perfect for the first day of library. Mr. Wiggle is the library's bookworm. He tells a story of what people have done to his books. The rhyming words will capture the child’s attention. After the book is finished, the children know what not to do to a book…write in it, tear the pages, leave it outside, eat on it, etc.
The book is ideal for pre-kindergarten to first grade students who are new to checking out books.

preschoolers loved this one. It had a bit of rhyming in it. They didn't wiggle or talk much during the story. They could tell me about it after I was done reading.
Cute books with such sweet yet sad pictures of a little worm who talks about how others ruined his book. It's a good book to use with little children to help them see that taking care of books is important. It's just really funny that our library's copy is very old, falling apart, pages taped together, and a bit sticky. Obviously, some patrons weren't paying any attention to the book.
