EVERYONE should read this.
What can I say? Seems weird that someone who is as actively feminist as I am took till now to read this. However reading this in 2007 made me appreciate just how on the money Ms Greer was at the time. She even foresaw where the holes in second wave feminism were...
Bottom line: read it. A masterpiece of polemic, infused with an equal part of joy and anger. Its the joy that makes it stand out as THE text that literally helped to change the world. And the anger that makes you stand up and be co...more

Written with outrageous wit, bombast, and vicious intelligence, yet somehow not nearly as engaging as Ms. Friedan's "Feminine Mystique" to me. Both writers also display casual racism and classism, as well as disturbingly violent homophobia, that are definitely products of a bygone age, and undermine an otherwise worthy polemic.
I still want to finish "The Female Eunuch". Greer is brilliant, and despite the book's flaws, the sheer beauty of her writing and certain arguement...more

When I picked this up out of the Women's Studies section this past January, I was really adrift in life. Greer's book caught me and refocused me, entire paragraphs eliciting a 'fuck yes' aloud.
Germaine underlines that uncomfortable feeling of what it means to be female in modern society, something I'd never noticed until falling into a heterosexual relationship. What does it mean to be expected to play traditional gender roles, to cater or ignore expectations?
A milestone.

It's a classic, which is why it should still be required reading for any feminist trying to educate themselves. But it's very, very much of its time, very much the work of a second waver with all the problematic attitudes towards sexuality, homosexuality and race that that implies. Worth reading as an historical record, but not something that I base my own thought on, really.

"Annoying so many of Greer s assertions in here are just plain wrong (the cause of homosexuality, female ejaculation, stereotypical comments about black male virility ). Some smart things to say about girls-and-puberty and Freud, though. A mixed bag. Just about worth reading. [April 2003]"

This is an excellent book on women, how society views women, and such. Of course the best quote out of this whole book that every female needs to know is "the body reasonably healthy and clean is the body beautiful."

I'm slightly biased because I love Germaine and everything she writes. Crazy stalker girl that kidnapped her and chained her up in her own home... that was me.
Thia book helped shape a lot of my views, it's great.

I only read half of the book. Yes, it was interesting and accurate in many parts, but also obsolete and the writing reminded me too much of my course literature in highschool.

An old classic. One of the best books by far not so much on feminism alone, but a dissection of the way women are past and present; an uninhibited presentation.

I really love this book! Greer's writing is conversational and cheeky...even if the overall premise is a bit extreme, her points are valid and inspirational.

I actually haven't picked it up for a while...
but still. I would call it feminism at it's best, so far.
Germaine Greer might change my life.

Of it's time,, but important. Probably should re-read it to see how it's stood the test of time, and also what I think of it again.
