Mostly boring, barely funny, distractingly chaotic and silly in a way that fails to be endearing or truly purposeful. In creating a universe in which God does not exist and everything that's happening can be undone (or at least turned on its ear) by a shipboard "infinite improbability drive," Adams created a world with no real consequences, no real risk. So what's the point? A world like that is inherently boring. He also failed to create a single character that was truly sympathetic, and I coul...more

Geez, this bored me to death. I felt like I was listening to my kids cartoons, or something. I think a lot of it was meant to be funny, but I just flat out didn't get the humor. I take that back, there were a couple of parts that made me giggle. Mostly, I tuned out. Seriously, I listened to this while mowing, and I would get through two chapters and realize that I wasn't listening any more.

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is a must-read for anyone. The combined irony, randomness, and sheer improbability makes it a favorite for total nerds everywhere. With a very stunning vocabulary, Douglas Adams has really outdone himself.
Summary: Arthur Dent is an intellectually smart man that is really left clueless and comparatively dumb throughout the book. To give an example of his intelligence, here's a quote that is responding to the third worst type of poetry known. "Actually, I qui...more

I just finished the book and i must say i loved it. The first couple pages i just couldn't focus on regardless how much i reread it but when i kept going it started to make a lot of sense this was a really good book for anyone interested in science fiction/fantasy or people who like comedies. I'm looking forward to the rest of the series.
This is one crazy book !
The book starts off with Arthur Dent at his house. Shortly after Arthur notices the quite large amount of bulldozers outside of his house, he is dragged to a nearby bar by his friend Ford. Ford explains how the earth is to be destroyed, and to live through it Arthur must be completely plowed out of his mind.
After being sucked up into a ship, then being shot out of that same one, something unprobable happens. They are saved ! After this and many other improbable things oc...more

The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy is a science fiction comedy novel, and is the first of what the author called a "trilogy of five". It's about four beings (Arthur Dent, human; Ford Prefect, an alien from somewhere in the vicinity of Betelgeuse; Zaphod Beeblebrox, the president of the galaxy with two heads and three arms, and Trillian, a human) making their way through the galaxy, what they come across, and the odd creatures they encounter. People who want a good laugh and some random, silly h...more

What can you say about an author who wrote a 5 book trilogy? One hilarious read, for one thing. I'd read Adams many years ago and wanted to return to read him again only this time a little more critically to see if the material still worked for me. It did.
Douglas Adams really started something when he wrote this parody of one genre, and in so-doing he started his own genre and others have followed in his footsteps such as Robert Aspirin, Terry Pratchett and even...more

The book, "A hitchhikers guide to the galaxy", by Douglas Adams is a science-fiction novel that succeeds at being one of the best of all time. The book has a very enjoyable sense of humor that always seems to go in unexpected directions. In this book, you(the reader)Follow Arthur Dent on his journey around the universe with his good friend Ford Prefect while they search for the answer to ,"Life, the universe and everything". This book can be confusing at times, but even whilst confused you will...more

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
Even the title of this book is brilliant. I loved the humour, the scope of Adam's imagination. Goes on my list of all time most loved books.

This is one of those books I didn't like until the very end. The plot was really engaging but the characters were too flat for me to care. The only really fun part for me was a very end with the plot twist. Naturally I can't talk about. Maybe if you're really into sci-fi you should read this but not otherwise.

Hitchhicker’s Guide to the Galaxy is one of those books that sucks you in and spits you out in the first chapter. The give and take form the book in magnificent and the content is something new to modern books. This book is the essence of what I think sci-fi is, and of course a total geek book. The language and diction is highly acceptable for a young adult age range. This book gives enlightening to me as a writer and how I could construct something so simple as aliens and losing a planet to a p...more
My first mistake was saying to a fellow colleague "I hadn't seen the movie." She directed me to read the book, which I began straightaway. After listening to the first book on audio, which was read by the author, I grabbed the volume edition so I didn't have to worry about waiting for the others on hold. It worked well that the author read the book because only he can convey his characters for a particular moment. I enjoyed this book very much with all its little quirks and am now a believer in...more
I may be the only person in the galaxy that never read this book before, though I've heard of it often. It is a relatively short book. Hitchhiker, similar to Letters From The Earth, presents (in a HIGHLY hilarious vein) the viewpoint that perhaps "MAN" doesn't need to take himself QUITE so seriously. One of my favorite quotes: "Isn't it enough to see that a garden is beautiful without having to believe that there are fairies at the bottom of it too?" (Chp. 16). It is VERY light reading and very...more
