Hug is a spectacular children's book. It is mostly wordless, with only one word per page... "Hug?" However, though it has such few words, it tells such an adorable story. There is a little baby monkey who sees other animals throughout the jungle hugging. There are a pair of snakes hugging, a pair of elephants hugging, etc. The baby monkey keeps asking, "Hug?" but he keeps getting rejected. Throughout the pages he gets more and more discouraged so the elephants decide to help the little monkey fi...more
Bobo, the little monkey, is walking through the forest and everywhere he turns, he sees hugs! So many parents and their babies hugging each other: elephants, snakes, giraffes. But then he begins to worry because he wants a hug, too. The kindly elephant picks him up and helps him look for his special hug. He sees more hugging animals, but none of those hugs are his. Bobo gets very upset and begins wailing. The other animals gather around, wondering what to do. Then, out of the jungle Mommy comes...more
Sometimes, the simplest things can mean the most. Hug, a book with only one word and two names, is an adorable story of a baby monkey searching for his mommy and a hug. All of the other jungle animals have mommies they can hug, but he can't find his. At the end of the story, the mommy monkey and the baby monkey are reunited and the baby gets his hug.
This story is told entirely by the illustrations. By looking at the pictures, you can tell the emotions of the baby monkey. At the beginning of the...more

Hug by Jez Alborough
The only word the book consists of is ‘hug’. The story is about a baby monkey called Bobo, who has lost his mother. He tries to find his mother within the jungle, but only comes across different mummy and baby animals. The mummy and baby elephant try to help Bobo find his mum. They do not appear to have much luck. Bobo gets upset and starts to cry, his mother hears his cries and they are reunited. The last page shows all the different mummy and baby animals hugging each other...more

When my husband first brought this book home for our 18 month old son, I was none too impressed. I didn't like the disproportionate illustrations.
After reading this book to my son too many times to count, I stand corrected. It is one of his favorites. He brings the book to me daily saying, "Happy!" The idea of little Bobo's need for a mom hug really captivates my boy. As we turn each page he pays close attention to Bobo's ever growing sadness. My favorite part of this book was when Bobo found his mom. Even though the author used very few words, you could feel how happy they were to see each other again. It's hard to imagine losing someone that you love, then seeing other people being loved by their version of who you lost.
I think that even though the author only used 3 different words throughout the entire book, it worked well. The pictures helped by showing Bobo's emotions while he looked for his mom, and letting you see how by each...more

This wordless book is encouraging for new readers, and even those as young as two. The word 'hug' is the only word repeated throughout the book. By having the same word repeated, it introduces the young child to early literacy. The author has captured the word simply inside of a thought bubble for easy sight recognition by the children. We follow a baby monkey as he searches through the jungle for his mommy. With each turn he meets a mom and baby couple- elephants, giraffes, even snakes. Each ti...more

This wordless picture book would be appropriate for preschoolers or kindergartners. The word “Hug” is used throughout the book in a word bubble. A little chimp is wondering through the jungle when he sees a baby elephant, snake, and other animals all hugging their mothers. The little chimp becomes sad because he wants a bug and the elephants try to help him find his mother to hug. They see lions hugging, giraffes hugging, and hippos hugging. The animals gather around as the little chimp begins t...more

This board book is sturdy and fun (and quick) to read. There are only three words in the text (repeated) so there is plenty of opportunity for my toddler to point and ask questions, and/or for me to provide my own descriptions of what's happening. It's a very sweet book, with lovely, expressive animals, and an adorable ending. My child loves to shout MOMMY! whenever we get to Bobo saying the same. She also wants to give lots of hugs when we read this. Good for bedtime or anytime.
This book is perfect for younger children and is even more touching without the words. The story is about a young chimpanzee who goes through the jungle and sees other animal families cuddling together and settling down. This continues to upset and frustrate the poor creature until he finds his own mother and gets the hugs and cuddles that he is looking for. It is a very sweet book that nearly all children can relate to.
Hug. All Bobo wants is a hug. He travels to the snakes, elephants, lions, giraffes, but no one will give him as hug. Besides a couple of other words, hug is the only word used. As a teacher, I would use this book to inspire creativity and writing... Maybe some community building as well. I would have my students write words to the pages of the book to see what they think the other animals may be thinking or saying.

Hug uses wonderful illustrations to tell the story of a baby chimpanzee. This little chimp really wants a hug, but has a hard time finding one. While searching through the jungle the reader sees all sorts of colors and shapes that really make the book come alive. This is a book created for very young readers, but it could also be used in elem. schools to get a discussion going.
An almost one word book picture book focusing on jungle animals and pairs of mommies and babies hugging.
The baby chimp has lost his mother and the jungle animals help them reunite.
Marker and pen illustrations are colorful and in some spreads use panels to give the book a sense of timing.
A great book to share with toddlers through preschoolers.

There isn't a whole lot to read in this story. That is why I am fond of it. The touching illustrations speak for themselves. The word hug is repeated throughout the story. After one reading BooBoo could identify the word hug.
Hug teaches about emotion and relationships. Plus it's a fun book about animals. Every child at every age will appreciate and benefit from this book.

Literacy skills:
Print motivation-easy to correspond book to actions, read the book to child and then give them a hug...great for print motivation
Print awareness-the simplicity of the book will make it easier for the youngest of early readers to make the connection between the word in print and the word being said.

Thus would be an excellent book to use to teach voice. There are but three words. The word hug is used many times. It is easy to see the emotion attached to the word as it is used.

Could there be a better book to read on Valentine's Day? I think not. Hug is all about an endearing monkey just out looking for a HUG. All the animals in the jungle are hugging their mommies...but Bobo's mommy is nowhere to be found. Sigh. At last, they find each other, and do what is best for both. Hug.

This is an adorable tale about a little chimpanzee who witnesses Mothers and babies throughout the jungle giving each other hugs and he calls out for some love too. It has sweet illustrations, very simple narrative and is a good book to read out loud together at bedtime.

Pappa bought it for momma to read to me.
**UPDATE** At three years old I still like this book. When I am sad, I yell out, "HUG!!" just like Bob. I say to my Mama and Papa, I need a hug to feel better right now, remember. Mama knows that the "remember" is me referring to this book.
Papa bought this book for Mama on Mother's Day. He thought it would be a nice book for us to read together. When I read this book at first I am sad and concerned. I look at the baby monkey and say, "Baby monkey is sad." I also say, "He needs his mommy." I won...more

My brother n' law and sister n' law bought Eli this book. There are about three words in it-Hug, Mummy and Bobo. It is a story about a young monkey who searches for a simple hug. Finally, he receives one from his mum. Very cute!
