My determination to achieve my goal of reading 80 books this year is forcing me to admit to my guilty pleasure: I read lots of romances (especially now that Barnes & Noble is handing them out for free. Curse you, B&N!!!).

Actually, I don't so much "read" them. I plow through them. Skim them. Blast through to the end. Look, it's not like they're Crime and Punishment, (which, incidentally, I just finished). I don't have to spend hours trying to figure out if the rain is symbo More...

Millie Brady unexpectedly befriends best-selling novelist Oral Hart the afternoon that Millie gets dumped. Orla, suffering from a writing slump after a scathing review of her latest novel, decides Millie is just what she needs to get her creative juices flowing again. She proposes an idea to Millie regarding her next novel, and makes an offer Millie can’t refuse. As the heroine of Orla’s next romance novel, Millie’s needs a man- or two or three- to spice up her love life.

Yikes - was I drinking or otherwise impaired when I wrote this review? Sorry for the typos. I believe they've all been fixed...

I got a Kindle for Christmas. :-)

I've read the criticism about how a Kindle is sacrilege because you don't read a "real book" - no real book smell, no cover art, no page turning, etc. - but I gotta say that I love it. Turning pages is great, I guess. But in the end, I really just like to read. Kindle allows me to do that just as ea More...

I absolutely adored everything about this book, characters, situations, dialogue – everything!

Millie and Hester are “flat-mates”, yep, this story takes place across the pond. These quirky gals have made a “celibet” and it all goes crazy from there! The “celibet” is that neither of them can have relations while in their city, the loser would owe 200 pounds to the winner. An amount that neither gal can really afford.

Throughout the book there is Orla, a romance author, More...

While sitting in her boyfriend's car listening to him try and convince her to move in with him, Millie spy's famous romance writer Orla Hart about to commit suicide. Jumping out of the car, and subsequently ending her relationship, Millie runs to Orla's side and convinces her that just because Orla's husband has been found out ot be cheating on her, that killing herself isn't the way to get even. Jill Mansell has surpassed herself once again in Millie's Fling. Chicklit and women's fiction readers will enjoy this spontaneous journey in Cornwall, England.

"Having ignored his plea, Millie promptly cannoned into the lamp-post behind her. Clutching her left shoulder and trying to pretend it hardly hurt at all--ow, ouch--she wondered why her life had to so closely resemble Mr. Bean's. What she wouldn't give to be sleek and chic and in control at all times." (Page 108-9 of More...

I got this book as a free download on kindle and was not expecting much. Little did I know that Jill Mansell is one of the best-selling authors in Britain. Even though Millie's Fling falls firmly into the chick-lit category, not usually one of my choices, I found myself reading the book in just a sitting or two.
Millie and her roommate, Hester, are twenty-somethings living and working in Cornwall. They appear to be a pair of rackety party girls, but I soon began to see more beneath the surfa More...

Thank you Barnes & Noble Free Fridays for providing me with such a fun read. Millie's Fling by Jill Mansell is a delightfully funny romance, nothing too risque and having a lot of heart. Millie finds herself in a bit of a bind--she's without a boyfriend and without a job, making for the perfect situation to be rescued by Orla Hart, romance writer. Orla is reeling from a scathing review of her last book and is determined to write something better. She decides to base her next book on real lif More...

After reading Perfect Timing, I knew I had to try another of Jill Mansell's books. I'd heard great things about Millie's Fling and it didn't disappoint. Millie is in a rut. A job rut, a boyfriend rut, and she needs some change. Little does she know that change will come about with her decision to speak to bestselling romance author, Orla Hart. Orla immediately takes Millie "under her wing" and sets about trying to find the perfect man for her....and while she's at it, she's going to wr More...

This book was a complete waste of time, alas. I found it on my Nook - I think it was a "free Friday" download from B&N which I must have forgotten about - and I felt like something easy to read so I read it. About the only good thing I can say about it though is that she writes decently and grammatically. Apart from that the plot was dull and predictable, the characters were not particularly riveting, and there weren't even any steamy love scenes to add entertainment value ... just a r More...

Millie's Fling tells the story of good natured Millie, who stumbles across a famous authoress on the verge of leaping to her death. After convincing her that that would be a problem, Millie befriends Olga and later agrees to let her turn Millie's own life into a novel. As Millie faces her daily, crazy situations, she relays them back to Olga, who began to transform this story into a work of ficiton. I love the Brits’ dry turn of phrase, tongue-in-cheek humour and ability to be self-deprecating. Jill Mansell has straddled all the above ingredients in her refreshing collection of chick-lit. Her books are fun reads; devoid of random smut and brimming with memorable characters, quick-silver dialogue and believable story-lines.

Millie’s Fling is one such fine example. The best way to review this l’il gem would be to give a little heads-up on some of the characters. So here goes:

After reading Miranda's Big Mistake and falling in love with chick-lit like I never imagined I could, I went on a journey to read as many of Mansell's other novels as I could. As I searched them out, all with their cute little covers, I came upon this one to follow up Miranda. However, when it arrived it was a different cover and looked like the absolute most corny and embarrassing book ever (in fact, I took the dust cover off to read it in public). However, I am not too proud to say to neve More...

One word comes to mind after I finished Millie's Fling, "Lovely". The beginning started off slow. I didn't connect with the characters right away and I started to lose interest. But, I continued and the characters grew on me. It's a very light read. Nothing earth shattering, no really bad people, just a lovely all around book. Millie's Fling takes place in England with English characters and an English author. Reading, I got an overall feeling of Bridget Jones Diary (movie) without the More...

Millie and Orla's meeting will change both of their lives. Orla because Millie just saved her life, and Millie because Orla is determined to make Millie the heroine in her next big romance novel. Unfortunately for Orla's story, Millie doesn't have a romance budding at the moment. Orla doesn't despair though. She sets right to work writing down all of the events that happen in Millie's life and arranging for Millie to "meet" some guys. Orla's taste in men is kind of bad, and Millie's ha More...

I did enjoy this read. It was your classic British chick lit. Easy, fun, light, made me like the characters and care what happened to them.

This was a sweet story and I really liked the instant rapport between Millie and Hugh. The whole crossword puzzle clue schtick was great! I wanted them to get together and stay together.

Lucas was a surprising character. Not at all what I expected him to be. I loved how his story played out!

Hester really annoyed me. She was the More...

This is exactly what I was looking for- a light, easy read that kept me interested and entertained.
When Millie impulsively decides to save Orla's life, their lives become tangled in strange ways. Orla, the blockbuster author, needs something different to write about. Millie, recently unemployed and single, looks to be just the thing. With a whole cast of crazy, (mostly) loveable secondary characters, Millie doesn't necessarily shine brightly. However, Millie is average enough, and finds her More...

Ainda outra caracteristica desta au More...

Well this book was a nice little surprise! For the first 1/4 of the book I was planning on giving this a 3 star rating, but it surprised me. I read the last 200 pages in almost one sitting. This was a nice, cute, funny, light, Chick-Lit (British) book. Normally I do not like British books, they are just not my thing. This did bother me a little bit at first, but once I was into it I kinda got used to it and it wasn't so bad. I really liked all the characters, everyone was very likable, especiall More...

I really enjoyed this book. It was just a great chick-lit book. It reminded me very much of the days of Bridget Jones and Jemima J...and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

I loved the main character Millie, who was down to earth, funny, charming and just self-deprecating enough that she was silly, but not stupid and annoying as some chick-lit protagonists can be.

But it was the varied cast of characters that I really enjoyed. Millie's best friend and roommate Hester who is slightly anno More...

I really will try most anything, including, in this case, chick lit, a genre I've previously spurned. This came unusually highly recommended, though, and from a generally reliable source, so I gave it a shot. The verdict: moderately cute, good for an end of the day, low brain-wattage read, with more mistaken motive twists and humor than I would have expected. The plot: in the process of saving the life of a famous novelist girl loses boy who's no loss, famous novelist sets out to find girl a new More...

5 stars for this book! I absolutely loved it!

When Millie Brady saves Orla Hart's life, she doesn't realise how drastically it will change her own. Her current boyfriend dumps her, however, she is unbothered and decides to spend a man-free summer. Orla, a bestselling novelist, has other ideas though, and begins to matchmake on Millie's behalf.

Millie's fling is the story of an ordinary girl befriended by a romance novelist who is a determined match-maker.

This was the first time in a long time that a book really delivered on both humor and romance. Mostly the romance novels that attempt humor never wrench more than a smile out of me, and most of the time it's as bad as the worst kind of pick-up lines - if you like the book (or the person) you just ignore the poor attempts at humor in favor of getting straight to the point. I downloaded Millie's Fling as a free e-book for the kindle. I was in the mood for something that was light and funny and from the book description it sounded like this story would fit the bill. I’ve never read Brit Lit before (except Harry Potter) and I think I got a pretty good glimpse of British mannerisms and humor in this novel.
