Although the art market develops fast and this book is 6 years old it is a great and helpful resource how to start or build an art collection. Written in a personal and easy to read style but nevertheless with a lot of helpful information it provides general advice (e.g. dealing with dealers, buying at an auction) as well as tips regarding specific art categories (contemporary, 19th/20th century, photography, prints, vintage posters, native american, african, oriental rugs and antiquities). Absolutely fabulous book about the ins and outs of art collecting. It's not a hobby for snooty people, I'll have you know. If you have a deep appreciation for art and need guidance on how to start art collecting and the resources you should reference in beginning this wonderful past time, this book is perfect for you! I highly recommend it and Hunter provides a wide array of helpful hints and she even has a blog that keeps you apprised of the art scene. A must for the art lover!!
The Intrepid Art Collector is about how you, or someone you love who needs a Christmas present, can buy art on a regular person's budget. It covers everything from contemporary art to prints to photographs to art posters to Oriental rugs, and lays out what you're looking for and what you should watch out for. It's a nifty read, fits in your pocket, and will make you sound smart at parties.
