First there is something you need to know - I learned so much from this book! I admit I am at a good weight but just need to tone myself up. I wanted to get the book so I can learn what to do, how to eat better, and how to help hubster do the same. In the book it has a chapter on how to help your significant other through it! Great idea!

Because I always need research behind something to prove its worthiness, I was excited when Cynthia included it in the book. I loved how many topics and researc...more

It seems like losing weight is one of everyone’s New Years resolutions. The book Cinch! by Cynthia Sass is designed to help you do just that – learn to eat better, conquer cravings and drop pounds. The plan is a 30 day weight loss program, which is divided into two parts. The first part is a 5 day quick start program in which you eat only 5 foods in specific combinations. This is pretty limiting, but she makes it clear it is totally optional. The rest of the book is a 25 day plan that calls for...more

Like most people, I start off the new year with resolutions. This year, one of those goals is to get healthier. I’ve been working on this for a few years now, and this year I vow to take it a step further with eating right, exercising, and hopefully those inches and pounds will fly off in no time.
When I heard about Cinch by Cynthia Sass, I was intrigued. I tend to get bored with diets and exercise programs, so I’m constantly having to change it up. I was given the opportunity to review Cinch and...more

Well, losing a few pounds is not only my New Year’s resolution, but it is also a complete must since my wedding is in 2011. I have already told my sister (who is my maid of honor) that she has to make sure that I am not freaking out and starving myself two weeks before my wedding. Believe me, that is something I would do. I am a notorious yo-yo dieter. I am constantly gaining and losing 10 – 20 pounds. Starting in my teenage years, I would go into phases where I would workout and diet obsessivel...more

Cinch! is not your run of the mill diet book. It is realistic and I'm totally into it. I don't necessarily need to lose weight, but I have been wanting to eat and feel healthier. This book was just perfect for me. This book would be wonderful for those wanting to lose weight or just wanting to get healthy.

This book includes a month's worth of delicious, great recipes that are totally customizable to your dietary needs- complete with shopping lists. No calorie counting, no points or grams to reme...more

This book is getting a lot of hype because of the "five-day, five-food fast forward" diet that has you eating only five foods for five days, but that is far from being the important part of the book. I can honestly say this is the first "diet" book I have ever read, but I'm glad I read it, because it has completely changed my relationship with food and gotten my husband and I to eat healthy.

Yes, it is a diet book, but even if you simply want to learn how to eat healthier, this book will help you...more

I've had this book out from the library for about 3 months now - one of my exercise instructors suggested it when I broke down, telling her that I'd been exercising faithfully and GAINING weight. I feel like I need to do something drastic and I can't just decide to cut out sugar - I need some kind of structure, which is what this is. It tells me exactly what to eat, when, and how to prepare it. And the insane "fast-forward" part is only for five days. I'm on day one, and I have a headache becaus...more

I really liked the down to earth writing and ideas. It just made sense! She was able to write analogies that really helped me to understand the scientific concepts. (Where was this book when I was taking that darn nutrition class in college?) I haven't started the lifestyle yet (at least as fully as it is written in the book, recipes and all), but I have thought much more about what I eat, how much, and the nutrients I am putting into my body. Just thinking about food as a puzzle everyday has he...more

In reading Cinch!, I have learned more about food and how they interact together. I have tried many diets in my life and I have lost a considerable amount of weight but I was not able to maintain it. The 5 day "fast Forward" looks like it is easy to follow. There are shopping lists and recipes supplied in the book that makes the program a cinch to follow. On other diets, I have always felt hungry and the author says that you will feel full all day long. I am definitely going to try this after Ch...more

"On Day 3 of the 5-Day, 5-Food Fast Forward, spinach started tasting sweet. On day 60-something, it’s turned into a dessert. Spinach used to be the green glop my mother force-fed me once a month. It used to be what Popeye ate out of a can. Now, beefy leaves fill my bowl, glistening with garlic-infused olive oil, and topped with black sesame seeds and bright green avocado. Dessert has never been easier or more bountiful. Dessert has never helped me breathe in a size 4 before either!"

Read this book at a family member's suggestion. As an RD I am always happy to see a eating book by an actual food expert. I have to tell you that this book is amazing for anyone - not just those that need to lose weight. It gives you some simple solutions to making sure that you have all the nutrients you need, not just cutting out calories. It focuses on loving and enjoying food instead of battling food. Thanks, Ms. Sass, for giving an RD some new ideas, and presenting information in a way that...more

Ok so I like most people resolve to eat healthier and lose some weight in the new year. I read this book and became inspired and took my husband along for the ride. We attempted the 5 Day Fast Forward....but let me say eating spinach for five days is rough. So we made a couple of the meals and had them all portioned out so all we had to do was grab a Tupperware and go. Everything I have eaten is amazing!!! And to top it all I have lost 5 pounds in 5 days!! I'm very excited to continue experiment...more

I recently reread Cythia Sass' "Cinch!" and really liked it. The best part? Her "puzzle pieces" idea.

Though she supplies a ton of recipes, the most valuable concept in this book is her idea of building each meal out of five healthy components: produce, lean protein, whole grains, plant-based fat, and spices/seasonings. I love this! It makes it very simple to build a healthy lunch or dinner out of whatever I happen to have in the house.

I especially like all her ideas for using spices and seasonin...more

While the basic point of this book -- that we should eat more actual food and to eat balanced meals of mostly veggies or fruits, isn't a new concept, something about the way the author explains things clicked with me. Her recipes are also pretty simple and easy for even a novice cook like me to follow. I made it through the "Fast Forward" which was kind of tough, but it has made the rest of the diet so far seem pretty doable.

The science and logic behind the plan is great; however, I think the actual eating plan is impractical. Chances are if you are already able to cook/eat meals at home, you're healthy and don't need this book. Unfortunately, the book doesn't offer any suggestions for dining out. That said, I thought the science and advice was very reasonable and it made me wish I could cook some of the recipes in it!
Heidi
Meeeh I don't know why I keep reading diet books... they are all exactly the same... same mottos, same methods, small meals, healthy meals, and exerise... There's no new science, no new ideas, just the same old drivel... I hope no one buys diet books any more and I hope none of what is in here is new to anyone. Of course, if it is, then I guess you really do need this book.
Sarah
Most diet books send people on this long slope of deprivation, starvation and ultimate failure. Not to mention that very few even consider long term health as the ultimate goal of weight loss!

Not so with Cinch.

The plans are easy to follow, backed up by science, and nothing is every completely off-limits. I liked the pace of the book and it was worth the read.

This book has a different approach/method to weight loss than other books. The author is very repetitious and just rehashes information already given in other books in her writing. I am inclined to try the quck diet for a few days but I think it is way too restrictive/boring for me. It reads very quickly and many parts can be skimmed.
Ashley
I really should get back on this, because it was working...then I moved, started working in a restaurant again and the usual. The start up period was pretty tough, and I only did it for 3 days because I couldn't handle 5. But great concepts, and I love her emphasis on REAL food and not diet food with fake ingredients.
Darcy
Like any diet book there are concepts in here you have heard before. I did like the way she set how the best way to figure out what you should eat the easy way. I also liked how she pointed out good things to eat in each category. Some of the recipes sound good, others not so much, but that is because I am a picky eater.
LeAnn
This book is great and it works. I love that she gives vegetarian alternatives. There are tons of recipes listed. It's easy to follow and motivating. The first five days are kind of hard, but you aren't hungry. If you stick with it it works and you feel better/healthier
Sheena
this book has a lot to offer those who are not picky... which is me. It sounds like a good easy plan in theory, but I couldn't stick to it as extensively as they want. However I did loose a few lbs doing this. But my favorite is still The Game On Diet book.
Lisa
The 5 day fast forward is next to impossible to do. I was starving the entire time! And the puzzle piece portion is kinda cool, I just wish there was a pull out cheat sheet or something to make it more easily accessible.

MCL. Skimmed.

Switch from eating packaged foods to real food, don't go less than 3 or more than 5 hours between eating, and combine protein, complex card, plant-based fat, and produce in every meal.

Ayup.

I saw Cynthia Sass interviewed on Fox News last night. Looks interesting so I thought I would give it a read! Sounds like healthy eatting and adding more fiber. Sounds similiar to Weight Watchers.
Carmen
Skimmed most of it. Got the gist. I read her previous book, Flat Belly Diet (worst name ever. For real.) and I was curious what had changed in 3 years. I'm thinking about giving it a shot.
Karen
I started this book hoping to find a solution for the "life after Weight Watchers" maintenance phase of dieting. I was looking for help maintaining the weight loss in a way that would not cost me every month (like paying Weight Watchers does) but alas, this was not that. Like WW, it gives you a formula that you can use whenever you are eating so that you can follow the plan. Unlike WW, it limits you to eating only certain foods. "I don't even miss pizza!"~Yeah, right. This plan is not for me.
MaryAnn
Very informative book. You will learn a lot of great info about food, cravings and exercise. Many terrific recipes. I learned a lot about planning my meals.
Kristen
good book with nice recipe ideas. she doesn't push one diet down your throat; you can learn a lot about food in general and healthy eating.
Donna
