A small collection of thoughts on how powerful our minds truly are, this is book you'll want to turn to again and again because though it's short, it's deep with meaning. There is no fluff to distract our brains from epiphany to epiphany. Some of my favorite quotes:
Thought and character are one.
The dreamers are the saviors of the world.
In all human affairs there are efforts, and there are results, and the strength of the effort is the measure of the result. Chance is not.
A man is literally wh...more

This is a great little book about positive thinking and attitude. I have needed to ponder this book a bit and see how to apply it better.

I agree with a great deal of this book. Our society likes to place blame on everyone but oneself. If one is poor, it is because of the economy. If one is rich, it is luck. Where is the dependence on self-reliance? Too much emphasis is placed on success in monetary forms rather than of personal respectability. I like the features of this book that discuss person...more

I liked this book because James Allen put into words many thoughts I have had. The statements are blunt and some based on scientific evidence as opposed to personal experience (which can ring truth as well). If applied, this book has potential to be powerfully useful. It is very short, I read it in between classes in just a couple hours. It is thoughtful, obviously, not your basic story line book. I do think the book lacked in addressing mental illnesses fully. It gives the notion you can think...more

Good thoughts will bring you good things in life, bad thoughts will bring you bad things. Here you go, you just read the book.

Reading this sentence is exactly like reading the whole book because it is the only idea in there but is repeated like a million times, in all possible ways. But that does not mean I don't believe in it, I do. It makes sense to me.

I read this book yesterday. I really enjoyed it and have set some new personal development goals in line with the book's concepts. This is a book I will reread throughout my life.

I do disagree with one point. James Allen said that bad thoughts lead to sickness and disease, which is the part I agree with. He also said the reverse is true, bad health is a result of bad thoughts, which I do not agree. I don't believe that all sickness and disease is a result of bad thoughts or sin. I believe that w...more

Fast and easy read but full of inspiration and positive ideas. One to read over and over.

It's amazing to me how certain philosophies are timeless. This book was written 100 years ago during England's industrial age when oppression of the average worker was standard practice. James Allen tells the reader how your thoughts, not mere circumstance, are what creates your life events. Allen believes there is a law of thought that determines our every life event. All action comes from thought. This is so similar to book like The Secret and other books that have been so popular in the last...more

In 2003, a number of leading self-help authors were asked to list the works that were, to them, most inspirational. The book mentioned most often was James Allen's As a Man Thinketh.

Despite the fact that his books have been inspirational for generations, very little is known about the man himself. He was born in Leicester, England. When he was fifteen his father was brutally murdered by a robber, forcing Allen out of school and into the workforce. He eventually worked his way up to the position...more

The book As a Man Thinketh is a motivational read. It boots morale and explains the idea that a man's thought are what makes him who he is. It also tells you what thought can do.

As a Man Thinketh is basically explaining how to tame your mind to help achieve your goals in 7 categories. These are Thought and Character, Effect of Thought on Circumstances, Effects of Thought on Health & Body, Thought & Purpose, "The Thought-Factor in Achievement", Visions & Ideals, and Serenity. Each one

The dichotomy between 'good' and 'bad' thoughts is way too simplistic as I think glum and distressing ideas are fairly normal and so a truly wise person knows to level out all abundance when it comes to the mind. The book is a precursor to the repugnant 'positive thinking' movement which has failed convincingly:

Do you meditate daily? Every morning, I wait until the house is quiet and say my rosary. The act of stopping all erratic and busy thoughts and constant movement to reflect on the focus of my mind and appreciating my blessings makes me a calmer person. When I say my prayers in the morning, I notice that I thought about my prayers and promises to God during the day, which makes me a better Christian. My actions are influenced by my thoughts.

That is the basic thesis of As a Man Thinketh, a litera...more

I read this book before, many years ago, and when I saw it in e-book form, I decided to read it again. It was as thoughtful (and thought-provoking) as I remembered. The theme is that "A man is literally what he thinks, his character being the complete sum of all his thoughts...A noble and Godlike character is not a thing of favor or chance, but is the natural result of continued effort in right thinking, the effect of long-cherished association with Godlike thoughts."

There is much to learn from...more

James Allen's book, As a Man Thinketh, I thoroughly enjoyed and found personally rather intriguing and mind opening giving me a new possibly better perspective of just how much impact one’s thoughts have on in not only their personality and ways of life, but also on the ability to change from those certain ways of life, habits, or addictions that might have been accumulated at some point into hopefully greaterly desired ones. Basically saying that you are brought up from your thoughts, and if yo...more

Recommended to Norm by: A stranger willing to help me when I needed help.
The first “self help” book I ever read was Norman Vincent Peale's “The Power of Positive Thinking”. I was a troubled kid seriously trudging down the “wrong road”. Seeing this and evidently caring about it, a “stranger” jewelry salesman at a large department store offered me the book. Guess he thought the loss of the book would be better than the loss of ear rings from his department around Mother's Day.

Since reading that book I have read in the neighborhood of 500-1,000 of these type of books....more

In the foreword, the Author says that this work is intended as suggestive rather than explanatory. He conveys that, this is not an exhaustive treatise, but a result of his own meditation and experience in the direction. I couldn’t but agree more with him.

Through this short book, James has explained relation of our thoughts with our character, health and circumstances. He has also tried to maintain a relation of our thoughts with purpose and achievement in life. Though the book is written in a mo...more

I have to start by saying that I read From Power to Poverty also (the "bonus book" included). DON'T read Power to Poverty. It is a waste of time!

I LOVED As a Man Thinketh - I am having Landon use it for dictation and we are doing a paragraph at a time, using it for vocabulary, but he is also making notes and writing in his journal his analysis of what is written. This is a powerful book to ponder and analyze. It is inspiring. I am really enjoying discussing it with Landon!

THOUGHT AND CHARACTER
* "As a man thinketh,in his heart so is he."
* A man is literally what he thinks, his character being the complete sum of all his thoughts.
* Every act of a man springs from the hidden seeds of thought.
* This applies equally to "spontaneous" and "unpremeditated" acts as well as to those which are delibrate.
* Act is the blossom of though, and joy and suffering are its fruits.

Published in 1902, this book addresses responsibility assumption. It is free (public domain) and a quick read and will fill your head with happy thoughts about how to re-work your mind to better suit your needs. It is a little sexist because 1902.

Some of my favorite quotes:

- Men do not attract what they want, but what they are.

- The soul attracts that which it secretly harbors, that which it loves, and also that which it fears. It reaches the height of its cherished aspirations. It falls to the...more

Allen's essay is full of some very interesting thoughts that I do not completely disagree with. Our thoughts are certainly the seeds of our words, actions, and character, as the old saying goes, but Allen takes it a bit too far in my opinion.

Our life circumstances are certainly affected by our choices and so our thoughts, but they are not wholly determined by them. Allen gives man a bit too much power. But these ideas come with an interesting perspective...they are coupled with faith in God. All...more

It looks like a children's book--just 72 pages. But every page is packed with fantastic stuff. In fact, you can save yourself thousands of dollars in personal development books just by reading this one; that's because all modern personal development theory seems to spring from it. "As a Man Thinketh" is the Mitochondrial Eve of self-help books. It was published at the turn of the century by James Allen, one of the first new-age thinkers, who writes from experience; just two days after arriving i...more

"Thought allied fearlessly to purpose becomes creative force." This is the basic idea behind all of James Allen's sugary half-truths. When I found an audio file with this text pre-packaged into my new learnoutloud.com cart, read by "Brian Johnson, Philosopher and CEO of Zaadz.com," I was briefly intrigued.

Then as I listened a bit more, I thought it was some kind of joke or parody -- surely in just a moment Brian, "Philosopher," will put on a more genuine, critical voice. Surely he would tell us...more

This is a very short book that is more like a phrasebook or a bunch of mantras for repeating to yourself on a cloudy day. Actually, this booklet reminded me of when I was in Brazil, running into groups of "Crentes" (believers) who would walk down the street clutching their bible like a sick child and muttering half scripture, half "yea me I'm awesome!" phrases to themselves and anyone within a 10 foot radius.

Which is sad. Don't get me wrong. I'm religious. I'm into feeling good about myself. I c...more

"As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he."

Simple, short, and yet amazing! This book can be read in 20 to 30 minutes. This is one of those books where every line is a seminar that can be reflected on and pondered. No fluff here.

It's the kind of book that you'll be reading and all of sudden, you have to put the book down to comprehend the magnitude of what is being said.

Thoughts are things. Read this book to find out how to put this universal law into action. Need I say more?

I discovered this classic while doing research for a Bible study. I was unaware of it, but was able to download it free onto my Kindle Fire. Written either in 1902 or 1903 (depending on the source you read), it is still very timely. I intend to read it again.

Although I do not agree totally with everything that Mr. Allen says, I certainly agree with his premise because it is based on scripture. Proverbs 23:7 states "as a man thinks in his heart, so is he." Mr. Allen said that "a man is literally...more

Although I didn't find myself swallowing everything Allen suggests about the power of our own thinking, there was plenty to chew on. A few favorite lines:

"Man is made or unmade by himself; in the armoury of thought he forges the weapons by which he destroys himself . . ."

And

"Man's mind may be likened to a garden, which may be intelligently cultivated or allowed to run wild; but whether cultivated or neglected, it must, and will, bring forth. In no useful seeds are put into it, then an abundance...more

This book could be summoned up as "You are ultimately responsible for your life through your thoughts". James Allen's presents his ideas like a no-holds-bar-stop-making-excuses-for-your-life slap in the face. I definitely agree with his major points though at times his moralizing seems a bit antiquated the core concepts are pretty solid. This book made me think about excuses, complaining and justifications vs. sacrifice and hard work. What I find intriguing about it is that all of us have such p...more

Having finally read this highly recommended book, I'm sure if I were to read it over and over again at different times throughout my life it would bring me new insights. I particularly appreciated the author's emphasis on patience with external circumstance, while not yielding the high ground.

That said, there are indeed some circumstances that make it nearly impossible to follow the well thought out injunctions promoted in this book. The only reason I don't give it five stars is because he did n...more
