This is a really great love story about love being strong enough to last...forever. Leigh grew believing that nothing ever lasts, fairy tales aren't real, a marriage is only a stepping stone to the next one. .bigger and better. Code Triage is a complex romance filled with real people doing things for solid reasons that tear their world apart. I chose it at random to read on my phone because I had forgotten my eReader. I chose it at random to read on my phone because I had forgotten my eReader. Once I started, though, I couldn't put it down. Nick, a former chef turned police officer, and Leigh, an ER doctor, are multilayered characters, but they're not the only ones. The pseudo villain Samantha is well drawn, as is Caroline, Leigh's sister. Even incidental characters have meaning and purpose within the story, down to a parrot who reminds both its family and Leigh the importance of forever.

It's highly unusual to find a romance novel with a discussion guide at the back, but this book very much warrants it. Code Triage explores actions and consequences surrounding divorce, trust, need, and a variety of other issues, but not in a "classroom" manner. They're an integral part of the characters' journeys from Nick's adultery during a separation from his wife to Samantha's desperate attempt to turn a moment of comfort after her brother's death into a lifetime commitment from Nick. And there's Leigh, a victim on the surface but whose own actions set Nick up to some degree, and until she comes to terms with that, they can never find their way back to happiness.

Yes, this is a romance novel. Yes, there is the implicit promise of a happy ending. But Code Triage is so much more, starting from a couple who have grown apart, not because they've fallen out of love but because they have let obstacles grow between them until what feels like an unscalable mountain keeps pushing them away from each other. Each major action has consequences, while the choices they make under pressure reveal just how superficial the things that keep them apart are. But both Nick and Leigh need to learn to trust, to learn that opening themselves up and risking the hurt is the only way to win back their love.

This is a powerful story filled with the dark side of marriage and commitment, the struggle to be vulnerable when all your instincts warn to hide yourself away. It's not for the faint hearted. It's not for those looking for a light and fluffy read. But if you're like me and want to meet deep characters, to learn from how they handle solid troubles often of their own making, you'll have as hard a time putting this novel down as I did.

I only had one significant hiccup in the read, a single scene where the fact that this is also an inspirational novel takes over the story with a faith message so heavy handed that it threw me out for a moment. However, that's one single scene. Faith is a key aspect of the book from page one, true faith in yourself and in God founded not on going through the motions but on accepting that life is complicated. Unless you have a real problem with faith and God making an appearance, you should be able to skim the above mentioned scene and enjoy the novel even if inspirationals are not your thing.

As proof of how the discussion guide is appropriate, I am planning a Monday post sparked by this novel, a realization about faith and religion that clarifies something I've been spinning around in my head for a while.

Now they're getting a divorce but he wants her back except it's not happening.

Everything comes to a head when a family from his neighborhood is hospitalized for carbon monoxide poisoning, the heroine is on the case and the hero is the police officer and SURPRISE, the other woman is the CPS worker on the case.

The other woman wants the hero for herself and isn't above using her own daughter...and frankly traumatizing her, in an effort to get him. He wants the heroine, but heck, if he can't have her he'll go with the other woman, and the heroine doesn't know what she wants but hopes that once she's free of him, everythign will get better.

This was a decent book, and I generally liked it, some issues that I found were actually worked out at the end. Example, the hero wanted his dream of a happy family but never bothered to think about how the heroine felt about his dream, such as the dining room table. He wanted one because in his mind, that makes family complete. Heroine doesn't want one because in her mind, sitting around the dining room table just reminds her of having to play happy families after seeing her mom shagging the boss. He does admit at the end that he was being selfish only focusing on his wants. BUT..there were a lot of things that weren't tied up and instead were christian romance forced onto God to deal with the details. Uhm...no, you really do have to put some work into it and not just trust everything to God. The heroine never really told the hero about her past, and I really didn't like that the hero pretty much was going to go be with the other woman if he couldn't have the heroine. Dress it up in whatever lies you want, but that's exactly what he was doing.

In the end the book was just okay. I did spend a lot of it completely absorbed in what was going to happen next, I just found the ending not that satisfying.

Her husband has tried to apologize for his weakness following the loss of his partner and his empathy for his partner's sister, but the doctor is not willing to forgive and forget. She was raised in a home where "forever" didn't exist, with a mother who moved from marriage to marriage.

The sister, having known the police officer since childhood, believes she would be a better wife for him, and having a young daughter she believes the three would be a wonderful family. She is a Child Crisis worker who monitors children living in jeopardy. When one of her clients, a single mother herself, leaves her children alone to go to her night job, and the babysitter doesn't show up as expected fifteen minutes after she leaves, and the children left alone suffer carbon monoxide damage due to a space heater operating because her furnace has been turned off for lack of payment, the mother finds her youngest non responsive, and the daughter, just a toddler herself, has just called 911 crying.

This brings the three main characters together in a difficult collaboration. The situation escalates, the single mother's drug addicted partner and father of her children enters the scene, and shooting begins.

The author skillfully shares an introspective view of each character's emotional roller coaster, spanning from anger and resentment and love and fear and protectiveness and abandonment ... it is a murder mystery with a strong psychological focus, and well worth a reader's time and tissues. This is the 3rd in the Mercy Hospital series, and while very similar to the other two, I'd say this is the best because it's not set up to follow the same plot as the others. Where those have a single woman butting heads with men, not at all looking for a romantic relationship, this book features an already married couple heading for divorce where the soon-to-be ex-wife constantly crosses paths with the 'other woman' who ruined their marriage.

Caution: This book may be hazardous to your daily routine. Side effects may include large neglected piles of laundry and/or over-producing herds of dust bunnies.

"Code Triage" is a medical suspense novel that will appeal to both men and women. The author dug into the deeper issues of how three different childhoods created three people with different expectations about love and marriage and how that threatened to tear apart Leigh and Nick's marriage. This book is for anyone who wonders if marriage can last for a lifetime.

You don't need to read "Critical Care" or "Disaster Status" to understand this story, and you can read this novel first without spoiling...more

Candace Calvert's Code Triage novel is one of the best Christian fiction books I have read in a long time. Sadly, these people become impatient and angry.It is not long before this anger becomes rage. Leigh Stathos, a doctor, in one day faces an out of control man who is a father and husband. Kurt Denton wants his family back with him. He does not care how it happens. The unexpected, horrible situation is one I've seen too often on the news lately. I felt very happy to read about it in the genre called Christian fiction. After such terrible circumstances it is possible to regroup and repeat again "Give thanks to the God of heaven. His love endures forever.-Psalm 136:26.

This book made me think about the people who put their lives in danger to save the public everyday. They protect strangers. Strangers who are sometimes in such a hurry there is no time to smile, say hello or acknowledge in any way. Cappy, the security guard, who works on hospital floors is one of the people who sacrifices his life daily. He cares deeply about what he is doing to help people. Nick, Leigh's soon not to be husband, is a policeman who gives his heart and soul to save other people like Kristi, a single mother, who is trying very hard to set the right priorities in her life because she loves her children. It is not easy for her. Then, there is Riley, the chaplain in the hospital. The hours she spends thinking and praying for the lives of other people who deserve to live happily, peacefully and safely with the knowledge that God never, ever judges them and loves them always. "She paused outside the doorway to say a brief prayer like she always did, as her training in lay chaplaincy had taught her. To ask for God's presence and to remind her that her job wasn't to fix or judge, but only to listen."

There are so many characters who add to the "drama in Code Triage." I will never forget Sam, the Child Crisis worker. When I think of drama, I think of what goes on between Sam, Nick and Leigh. Their story proves to me no matter how dramatic my life might become God is able to use His Potter's hands to reshape the dark, narrow tunnels in my life bringing lightness and a wide path back to hope again. Help me! I need a prescription STAT! Because I am seriously addicted to Candace Calvert’s Medical Hope series fiction!

I've heard such awesome things about this series that I was thrilled when Tyndale sent me this book to review.

This is a very realistically written hospital drama (some scenes had me on the edge of my chair wondering what would happen next while another section detailed a patient's allergy problems). It had these great characters that I truly was pulling for, realistic problems and struggles that they had been facing up to this point and even into their seven days and even some mystery.

This was a good book. I liked the characters and the story line. I expected a HEA, which there was, but I liked that the trajectory was unexpected. There was plenty of action, romance, twists and turns, and quirky/lovable characters.

Tension is the word for Candace Calvert’s book Code Triage.

Just being an ER doctor makes for tension for Dr. Leigh Stathos.

Just being a cop makes for tension for Nick Stathos.

His affair and their pending divorce makes for tension between them.

I got this book because I like medical mysteries, but was a little disappointed when it turned out to be a religious treatise. However, the storyline was medical as well as social and I still wanted to slap the main female character out most of the way through the book. I sympathised with the male character, though he appeared to be extremely stupid in not realising what the bad girl was doing in messing with his wife's head.

It took me a long time to get through this because I kept losing interest. I kept reading other fast, intense books in between. This just dragged out and the preachiness/prayer I found disruptive to the story line, which in itself was ok.

I liked the hospital setting and medical scenes in this book. There were lots of unfamiliar medical terms but they became clear in context. I'd call this book a medical thriller romance.

The secondary characters were my favorites: Kristi and her kids, the hospital security guard, the elderly neighbor couple (old love really is cuter than young), Maria the foster child, and Tag the donkey. Especially Tag the donkey!

Here's a quick summary: Dr. Leigh Stathos separated from her policeman husband, Nick, over a year ago. Shortly after, depressed and grieving the loss of his best friend, Nick spends the night with his friend's sister, Sam. Immediately, Nick regrets the affair. He tells Leigh about it, bent on honesty, and begs forgiveness. Leigh is completely unforgiving. She leaves San Francisco but returns when her sister, Caroline, runs into DUI problems. All this is backstory (and some is the secondary plot of 'Disaster Status').

In the opening chapters of CODE TRIAGE, Leigh comes face to face with Sam, the woman her husband slept with. Leigh has dreams of killing Sam, something that disturbs this gifted ER doctor. Nick is still trying to convince Leigh to give him, and their marriage, a second chance. But Sam is equally determined to keep Nick for herself. Sam is ruthless! Because she is his best friend's sister, Nick is easily manipulated by Sam.

Add in some crazy ER situations - it's full-moon, after all. An elderly neighbor couple. Leigh's horse, Frisco, who is suffering a mysterious gastric ailment and has oddly become attached to a rescued donkey. A single mother struggling to keep her kids and the father who will stop at nothing to be with his kids. And much more.

The best part of Candace Calvert's novels is that her characters stay true to real life. No hokey "get religion and the world is right" solutions for her plot threads. When tragedy strikes, each character faces the situation believably for their personality. Nearly dying does not turn a viallian into an angel! Neither Leigh nor Nick solve their problems simply with a prayer, as if waving a magic wand. Yes, they pray. Problems don't resolve until they really listen to the Lord with open minds and hearts. But it's done in a way that I can imagine happening to myself or anyone around me.

I recommend all of Candace Calvert's novels to anyone who enjoys medical suspense/thriller, with a heavy dose of romance. (less)

I have never read a book by Candace Calvert before, but the third book in the Mercy Hospital series is great! With a mixture of suspense, action, and a heart-felt story about a marriage that a man wants so desperately to save after he hurt his wife. Reminded me of the movie Fireproof, except with a whole different story and plot - it was great!

Shelves: christian-fiction-romance

This book was hard for me to get into initially. Not because it was bad...it was actually really good, but because of the story line. I'm not a fan of stories where the spouse cheats. Add into the mix, the point of view from the "other woman" and her plotting to get the man back...oh, it was really hard for me to handle. In fact, I started this book and then put it down for about a month because I didn't think I'd like it...but low and behold, I survived and I liked it a lot!
