The black humor in Dairy of a Madman, the sheer weirdness of The Overcoat and the complete nonsense of The nose satisfy all your Russian lit. cravings.

So my dislike for Gogol was not just a youthful ignorance - I do indeed not like his work. I'm always tempted to compare with Chekhov, my all time favourite when it comes to Russian classics, and Gogol's stories lose in every possible regard: less funny, less touching, less exact, less special. It might not be a fair comparison, given how Chekhov came so much later, but still: Gogol's stories are neither funny nor really tragic, but leave me somehow terribly indifferent. And what is worse than t...more

"Päällystakki" taas alkoi jaarittelevasti ja kuivasti,...more

Five short stories, most of them quite boring and not very entertaining. There's fantasy mixed with reality, and maybe that's what I didn't like. Actually, the only one that is worth reading is "Diary of a Madman", which is brilliant.

words from people and people as pills (Sofia)
I really liked this short stories. There is a subtle sarcasm on his style that I really like. My favourite is definitly "Diary of a Madman".

Hovering between dream and reality, Gogol paints a picture of 19th century St Petersburg in four unrelated tales. A Faustian tale, tragic lovestories, the mind of a madman and the tragedy of a clerk.
Funny, gripping, moving, and all very well narrated. Definitely recommended.

Andrea De Pace
Visionary tales about hilarious characters from Petersbourgh.
This edition contains also two articles perfectly describing: Russians from Moscow vs Russians vs Petersbourgh and Italians vs French people. Extremely smart and still very true
Mariel Elizondo
Simplemente maravilloso.

Dimenticabili, insomma.

...Are there not any English translation of Gogol's books or the English speaking people just do not read Gogol...?
Jorge Luna

Gogol (Николай Николай Гоголь) was born in the Ukrainian Cossack village of Sorochyntsi, in Poltava Governorate of the Russian Empire, present-day Ukraine. His mother was a descendant of Polish nobility. His father Vasily Gogol-Yanovsky, a descendant of Ukrainian Cossacks, belonged to the petty gentry, wrote poetry in Russian and Ukrainian, and was an amateur Ukrainian-language playwright who died...more
