Reid includes a large and diverse group of poets here -- 57, if I count correctly. I got that figure by paging through the biographical section, which is called an "index," but isn't. There is no table of contents. The usual suspects appear -- Jimenez, Lorca, Anonymous -- but there are also some surprises, like Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.
I don't read Spanish, and in any case the Spanish originals aren't included in this book, so I can't address the linguistic accuracy of Re More...

I have to say, I know nothing of translating the Spanish language or the art of Spanish poetry, so I cannot comment on any technical aspects of the book, A Salute to Spanish Poetry: 100 Masterpieces from Spain and Latin America. However, I do think the creator of the book, John Howard Reid, did an excellent job; the Latin flavour comes through the translation and you can almost feel the Spanish sun as you read the words.

A Salute to Spanish Poetry presents 100 works of art originally written by leading poets, and those little known in their time, from the 13th to mid 20th century in Spain and Latin America, now painstakingly translated by John Howard Reid.
Choosing the right pieces can make or break any anthology. Mr. Reid has succeeded here as there isn’t a weak selection in the group. Covered is a varied assortment of topics as diverse as the poets themselves. It would seem as though these titles we More...

100 Masterpieces from Spain & Latin America
This is a diverse collection of poets and their poetry, lovingly translated by John Howard Reid, from the original Spanish or Portuguese. Despite the varying geographical origins, many of the topics are united: the shades of gray in shadows, the play of light and darkness, and the mysterious reflections of water, fog, and mist. Loneliness is a common theme, as is a feeling of desolation. But rather than dissolving into a sea of melanch More...

Thank you, thank you, thank you, John, for picking me as one of the winners for this book!
I haven't read a poetry book since I was a kid and this one really intrigued me when I saw it as a giveaway. Lately I've been interested in reading some good latin(a/o) literature and the prospect of doing it through well translated poetry is exciting! I can't wait to start this when it arrives :).

Updated 12/30/10 I'm so happy I was chosen to receive a copy of this book through Goodreads! John Reid has chosen a compelling selection of Spanish poetry to translate for this collection. The poems are varied both by time period and by subject, and enjoyable to read! I especially enjoy this stanza from "On the Death of My Father":
How Death approaches
with such silent steps!
How swiftly Pleasure
disappears -
and once remembered
gives only pain.
