The summer of 2059 is drawing to a sweaty close when a killer makes his debut with the slashing and mutilation of a prostitute. He leaves behind a note addressed to Lieutenant Eve Dallas, commending her work and inviting her to participate in his game...and signs it "Jack." Imitation in Death is the 17th book in Nora Roberts’ popular In Death series written under her pen name, J.D. Robb.

It is still the summer of 2059 and Eve has got herself a case. With each murder, this killer is imitating another famous killer. Jack the Ripper, Al DeSalvo, and Ted Bundy just for starters. If the murders are completely different, how does Eve know that they’re all being done by the same perpetrator? Because he leaves a note a...more

A killer is on the loose, only this time he chooses to disguise himself as some of the most gruesome serial killers of the past.
Starting with Jack the Ripper, he terrorizes his victims using the mask of historical serial killers. He's chosen Eve as his rival and is baiting her to pursue the case. Unlike other cases, this case has a short elite suspect list. With none of the suspects having alibis and all of them looking guilty one way or another, it's up to Eve and Peabody to find out the real k...more

#17 in the Eve Dallas series. Life in the Eve Dallas universe moves along in the NYC of 2059. Aide Delia Peabody decides to co-habit with Detective McNab and she prepares to take the detective exam. There is a small follow-up to the story of husband Roark's mother from Portrait in Death (2003) and also from that entry, Major-domo Summerset returns from his vacation trip taken after breaking his leg. But as always, Eve's search for killers takes center stage with this entry's killer emulating fam...more

Book Review: 3 Treasure Boxes

Someone is imitating famous serial killers and performing copycat murders. The same person is leaving a note at each gruesome death scene addressed to Eve. Lieutenant Eve Dallas is a tough, smart, likable homicide detective, and she is being taunted to find the killer before she becomes the victim.

To date there are 42 books in the In Death series, with one more expected to be released in February of 2012. These books are crime drama, suspense and romance because they...more

Another great edge-of-the-seat read. This one has you worried that even Eve won't be able to solve it. You empathize, sympathize, worry, hurt, and laugh, both with the suspects and Eve's team. You watch Eve gather evidence and tell you why each of her suspects is worth a second look while Peabody does the same. You get so many excellent arguments that you can't decide for yourself who did it, although there are two or three you don't want to be the murderer and one or two you do. Highlights? Eve...more

Strong police procedural highlights 17th Eve Dallas !

We continue to be astounded at the publishing pace of Nora Roberts. Despite her "regular" books under her own name, these fun NYPD homicide Lt. Eve Dallas stories, written as "JD Robb", keep coming at the rate of one or two a year. "Imitation...", the 17th entry in the "... In Death" series, is not the emotional blockbuster of the just prior two ("Purity..." and "Portrait..."), but nonetheless entertains throughout this tough-minded police pro...more

A brutal serial killer is hunting women in New York, killing them in the style of famous former murderers, such as Jack the Ripper and Ted Bundy. He leaves letters addressed to lieutenant Eve Dallas at the crime scenes, taunting her and her associates. Eve manages to keep the media buzz to a minimum, but all the main suspects are either foreign diplomats or high profiled celebrities, and it's not an easy job. Add to the fact that catching a killer based on the exclusive stationary he prefers, is...more

I have read several of the stories in this series featuring Lieutenant Eve Dallas and her alpha man, Roarke. She is not one of your usual ultra-feminine romantic heroines. She is strong, independent and feisty, yes but she is also actually a little odd: she does not know anything about family relationships or feminine wiles or sweet talking, she is somewhat like an alien dropped on earth. She is driven by her personality to excel in her job as a hunter of murderers (she is a Homicide Detective),...more

5 Stars! J.D. Robb does it again Seventeen books in and this series is still going strong!! It never gets old for me and it just keeps getting better. Roarke and Eve are so comfortable in their relationship, it makes me smile. I love the way they tease each other, Eve comes off as so aloof and annoyed, all the while loving it when Roarke irks her into submission. The passion and desire they have for each other gives me the warm fuzzies. On this particular case Eve brings Roarke on board as a co...more

Imitation In Death is a continuation of the In Death series featuring Eve Dallas and her husband Roarke. In this novel, Eve is dealing with a killer who imitates famous serial killers like Jack the Ripper. The killer leaves a note on the body of his first victim addressed to Dallas, and just like that Eve is caught up in a new case.

I really enjoyed this book and find that for me this series just gets stronger and better. I love the characters and their relationships with one another which is wha...more

In this police procedural, Lt. Eve Dallas is faced with a serial killer that likes to copycat the famous serial killers of the past - and leaves notes at the scene addressed to her. As her team delves into the mind of this maniac, Eve is faced with nightmares of her own as memories of her mother surface for the first time.

The only thing that disappointed me was realizing that the cover art gave away the killer, but since I didn't pay attention to it, I didn't realize it ahead of time.

I enjoyed...more
This Is Not The Michael You're Looking For
One of the points that is impressing me about this series is Robb has figured out how to take an established procedural novel concept where the character quirks are largely fixed and expected in each subsequent book, yet manage to keep giving us actual character growth across books. This is striking different from a number of other (mildly) similar series I could name where the characters and the writing are so deep in a rut that they've permanently stopped moving.

This particular book had a bett...more

A fairly standard In Death novel, and while an okay read, it was far from a favorite. The amount of suspects who I couldn't always keep straight, with the addition of the stories of and references to historical serial killers, made the book feel more cluttered than necessary. The killer's misogyny, while put in its place by Eve et al by the end of the book, was still uncomfortably virulent to read, and I prefer reading about bad guys with more complexity, even if this sort of thing is realistic....more

In 2059, Jack the Ripper has come to the streets of New York. And Lieutenant Eve Dallas, who read biographies of serial killers while other kids read about cute animals, recognizes the killer's hommage immediately. While Eve chases the Ripper, a victim of the Boston Strangler is found. Now Eve knows her killer is more of a mimic than a specific copycat. Since her suspects all have clout, Eve has to move slowly and follow the book to the letter. Her gut knows who-dun-it, but she has to follow pro...more

This is my "in the car" series, because I'm in the car a lot. But because my trips are usually short and I often have kids in the car with me I don't get to speed through these like I would if I read them at home. And I am so happy about that!!

I have said before, I love the narrator. Don't get me wrong, Robb weaves some awesome mysteries and the characters are compelling, but I keep coming back to the audio versions and I really enjoy savoring each book. I look forward to the short spurts of lis...more

This time around a serial killer is killing people in the fashion of famous serial killers starting with Jack the Ripper. He leaves a note for Eve at the scene of his crimes, making it personal . Is Eve on the hit list? The list of suspects are either diplomats or celebrities making the questioning more difficult as these people put up obstacles.

Peabody is slated to take the detectives exam and the reader struggles right along with her as she studies. Peabody does not want to let her boss down a...more

Imitation in Death by J.D. Robb is the #17 in her In Death... series of books. In this book, Lt. Eve Dallas is up against a murderer who imitates infamous murders of the past.

I did not enjoy this book as much as I have the others--it seemed too much dialogue and not enough action for me. The characters seem to be trying to deduce who did it for most of the twelve hours to complete reading the book via the audiobook.

The narrator of this series, Susan Ericcson, is very good, almost flawless...more

it is nice to be able to satisfy my craving for a bit of Eve & Roarke action!!!

Capable and brilliant cop has lots of vulnerable moments and we fit another jigsaw piece into our picture of Eve.... she talks about her mother...

Peabody makes Detective! then realises that she can't stay as Eve's assistant.....

Eve offers her a different position.... her partner!! All is right in the world

LOL moment... when Roarke buys a bright shiny bracelet for Eve for being away for 2 days!!!

Roarke's discovery...more

Everything the future has changed. The way we eat, the way we exercise, the way we make love. But like I have said before, murder doesn't change.

But this murderer, likes the old way of killing off people.

Jack the Ripper, Ted Bundy, John Wayne Gacy and many more old style murders. These are all past names, but still the spirit still lingers. And sometimes, someone will possess that spirit and kill exactly the same way, even use the same name.

But is it a spirit, or is it someone that fantasizes ab...more

Most serial killers have a pattern, but a copycat killer in New York is imitating the MO's of famous killers of the past and is calling Dallas out. As she tries to track down the culprit, Eve balances the busy social life that has developed around her through her friends and her handsome husband Roarke. The theme of mothers is a striking chord in the investigation, which brings another flashback to the surface and we get the first real view of Eve's Mother.

There is a lot going on around the actu...more

- The serial killer is imitating famous serial killers & leaves a note behind addressed to Dallas. She traces the expensive paper back to 5 suspects & narrows it down to top 2. A snobby UN rep & an author who wrote about the famous serial killers.
- Dallas had a dream about her parents, she remembers her mom is a junkie & a whore who hates Eve for being born out of her...
- Peabody is doing her detective exam & passes! She makes detective 3rd grade.

I haven't read one of these in awhile and it was really nice to get back to these characters. They don't seem to change much which is nice in some ways, but will probably bother me as I wade through the next 10 books.

This one seemed to have more humorous aspects to it than some of the others I've read which was extremely welcome. With the In Death series, I've found my own current mental state is directly proportional to how much enjoyment I get. Plus, I think it does bode well to take a break...more

What I never got over was the fact that the killer specifically wanted Eve to be the primary on the case. I mean, sure having Eve as the primary on the case meant lots of publicity, but seeing as Eve had found every killer in every case she's ever had, one would assume she would continue to do so, meaning if she was the primary for the this particular case, she'd most likely find the killer and put him in prison. So why increase your risk of being caught and leave a letter for Eve and making her...more

Book #9 of 2011

I felt this was a little different than a lot of the other "In Death" books. From the very beginning, Eve had her list of suspects and most of the book was just talking to them, tiptoeing around them, working them. Usually she gets a feel for one of the suspects, but if she did in this book, she kept it to herself. Not until near the end do we figure out who she suspects and by that time, she's serving a search warrant for his home. A lot of this book also dealt with Peabody takin...more

Nora Roberts just keeps this series going with fantastic writing, great murder investigations, and perfect development of beloved characters for her fans!

This is the 19th installment of the series about Eve Dallas and the people in her world, and every time I start the next book, there's a tiny little fear that this will be the one that loses the spark, or gets predictable, or takes the characters I adore somewhere I don't think they would go. So far though it hasn't happened - YAY!!

This time, E...more

Imitation in Death starts out with a death as per usual for J.D. Robb’s books, but I found this one to be much more disturbing than usual. It reminds me that Robb’s books are definitely not for the faint hearted and the heat certainly kept rising in this book and we had lots of strands from previous books being drawn in to add to the plot complexity and I really enjoyed that aspect of the novel. Robb over the past two years has become one of my favourite authors and the In Death series really ha...more

As all of the "in Death" series, I love these books. I love the characters, both minor and main. I love how they stay consistent to their personalities. This book is more gruesome than some of her others in this series, however, it isn't as intense because the crime is not directed at Dallas. So, if you are a sensitive reader and don't like gore, this one isn't for you, however, if the others are hard for you to read because you are anxiety ridden about Dallas-this one won't leave your stomach c...more

Another great book in In Death series. I've just finished Imitation In Death. This series is at its prime.
J.D.Robb has been, for the past 4 books or so, excelling herself. It always amazes me the quality of this series. Book after book, the reader is surprised, totally compelled to this futuristic world where romance and crime walk hand in hand. I'm very content to note that the enthusiasm hasn't dimmed yet. Nor I hope it will.
So, slowly I'm trying to pick up with the current releases. I sure...more

I found the premise of this one interesting with the killer imitating some of the sickest serial killers off all time. I enjoyed the characters as usual. But this book lost something in the execution for me as I found it to just be OK.
