I have mixed feelings about this series. I love the premise of ghost hunters and the cases are interesting. Hatchet Jack and the children ghosts were definately intriguing. The covers are simply wonderful. Definately a book I enjoy having on my shelves. MJ is a great main character and you can tell the author really knows what she's talking about with the psychic stuff.

... ok what I can't stand with this series is Gilly and Steven. Gilly is whiny and tries way to hard to be stereotypical gay...more

Victoria Laurie's Abby Cooper, Psychic Eye series is such a treat to readthat I eagerly bought up her Ghost Hunter mysteries as well. I've started with book 2 in the series as I am getting them from our local library so they don;t get to me in order.

The Ghost Hunters have been hired by M.J.'s friend Karen, who they call Teeko - because she's a knock out - to investigate the Northhelm Boarding School near Lake Placid NY - an angry ghost, nicknamed Hatchet Jack has been terrorizing the area for...more

M.J. Holliday has the gift of communicating with the dead, even though sometimes it doesn’t feel like such a great gift. Every school has its bullies, but Northelm Boarding School located near Lake Placid, New York, houses a real bad one: a deadly demon named Hatchet Jack. M.J.’s good friend Karen has asked her—along with her partners Gilley and Dr. Steven Sable (a.k.a. Dr. Delicious)—to send Hatchet Jack back through the portal he came from. With renovations at the school starting in a week, th...more

This was a fun, light and entertaining read! M.J. Holliday and her ghost hunting partners have been asked by her good friend to investigate the terrifying haunting going on at her friend's niece's exclusive boarding school. The poor young girl was terrorized and chased by a hatchet wielding man in the school, but no one else saw him, although there are rumors that the apparition has been haunting the area for years. The school is due to undergo some construction; could that have disturbed the gh...more

This story picks up a few months after its predecessor, What's a Ghoul to Do?, leaves off. The first book was pure fun, with an interesting mystery and the promise of romance between the main character, MJ, and Steven, a dashing surgeon with a storied past. This book didn't work as well for me. The first one I read in a day. This one took a week. The romance is oddly stalled. It feels a bit like the author is looking for ways to postpone the inevitable coupling, so she just sends MJ's suitor on...more

All boarding schools have their fair share of secrets but Northelm takes the cake. A sinister phantom named Hatchet Jack haunts the premises, terrorizing the students and chasing after them with a giant axe and crazy eyes... But nobody recognizes the names, and the students he allegedly killed seem to have come out of nowhere. Definitely creepy. M.J. Holliday is called on the scene to take care of business before the renovations start, but she might not have enough time. The dean is oddly oppose...more

Every school has its bullies, but Northelm Boarding School near Lake Placid, New York, houses a real whopper: a lean, mean, and deadly demonic ghost named Hatchet Jack. M.J.'s good friend Karen has asked her- along with partners Gilley and handsome Dr. Steven Sable- to send Hatchet Jack back to the portal he came from.

With renovations at the school starting in a week, there isn't much time for ghost hunting. Plus M.J. has to deal with an uncooperative dean, Gilley being paranormally preyed upon,...more

I picked this book up after reading the first book in the series & was eager to learn more about my favorite characters. While I enjoyed this book thoroughly, there were a few parts to the book that had my eyes rolling at times.

This current book finds MJ being recruited by Teeko to hunt down a psychotic ghost by the name of "Hatchet Jack" that haunts the ultra priviledged school that her niece attends. Along for the ride are her teammates Gilley (old friend) & Steven (the love interest)...more

I liked the first book in the series enough to want to pick up the second. This is a good series to read in the month of October since there are all kinds of paranormal hijinks about. In this installment M.J. travels to a boarding school in upstate New York to attend to the diabolical haunting of a really evil spirit named Hatchet Jack. I was kind of surprised at how intense the story of Hatchet Jack got at the end. Young boys being chained up and then let out to be hacked to death is definitely...more

Book two in the Ghost Hunter Mystery series. I found this one much better then the first. It started off kind of slow at the beginning but it didn't stay that way for long. Pretty soon I found myself really into it and would read as much as I could get in every night or as long as my husband would let me before he wanted the lights out to go to bed. My thoughts on this book are this. The ghost in this one is nasty. I'm really glad this is fiction we have enough horrors in our world and bad thing...more

Who doesn't love a good axe-wielding marauding ghost who roams the hall ways of exclusive boarding schools? Toss in a smart-alec psychic detective, a swishy business partner and a millionaire boyfriend...and I think you might explode if you tossed any more cliques.

High art? Not by far. Toss-away poolside reading? Absolutely. I'm unlikely to read any more of the series, despite the hilarious punny titles, just because the characters are beyond predictable, and I'm so tired of gay men being portr...more

Basically, I LOVED this book. I thought the mystery was great and intriguing. It really kept me guessing and I read the book pretty face because of it. I'd start reading and next thing I know 60 or 70 pages had passed. I actually found some of it kind of scary. I didn't actually get scared reading it, but thinking of what the people being chased by Hatched Jack must have experienced that's scary! For a book about ghosts the only thing I found unrealistic was the vast amounts of money some of the...more

I thought it was okay. It was fast paced and somewhat exciting. There was tension between the characters, especially between M.J. and Steven - there's the romance element - bonus! The interaction between the characters is awesome, I love the banter between Gilley and M.J.. I have to repeat myself (I'm sure I've mentioned it before), the dialogue has to be good otherwise I put the book down! The dialogue was good, but Steven's little problem with the language was starting to get on my nerves. One...more

I was dissatisfied with the first novel in this series, "What's a Ghoul to Do" because our heroine, MJ Holliday, medium and psychic, got into lots of should-be scary situations, yet never managed to be in any danger. It's pointless to read a "ghost hunter" mystery when it's got less "scare" than the Haunted Mansion ride at Disneyland! With "Demons are a Ghoul's Best Friend", MJ is faced with a hatchet-wielding ghoul who has terrified children and adults alike for 30 years. I had high hopes that...more

Book two in the ghost hunters series finds MJ, Steven and Gilly helping out their friend Karen after Karen's niece is attacked by a ghost at her prep school. When MJ finally runs into the ghost, she realizes he's nastier than anything she's ever come up against and if she's not careful could really do her harm. She's got one week to solve the mystery behind the evil ghost before construction begins on the school, will she be able to send him away before he does any more damage or will the kids a...more

In the Acknowledgements, the author admits that she put absolutely no fore-thought into this book - a fact that is painfully obvious as you read on. It's a very thin story with lots of filler. The bits where she's actually interacting with the spirits are somewhat interesting - inspired by Laurie's professional experience as a psychic. Dr. D's mis-attempts at American colloquialisms remain an annoyance to this reader, since idioms are some of the easier and most interesting parts of a foreign la...more

oooh what a wild ride, 2nd in the series, this was even better than the first. MJ Holliday goes after Hatchet Jack in this installment. This book is fast paced and kept me guessing till the very end. A real page turner; you can expect to lose sleep on this one as you wont be able to put it down. This book has it all, Lot of mystery, ghosts, ghost hunting, murder, action , humor, and a little fluffy romance with Dr. Delicious. The ending had a huge twist that i wasnt expecting! What a great book....more

I fell in love with Victoria Laurie because of her other series and so I am giving these characters --the ghost busting medium and her crew--a try. I am not as enchanted with M.J. , her side kick Gilley or the gorgeous Dr. Sable. M.J. can tell a ghost how to go to the light but she has a hard time telling Dr. Sable she's just not interested in being another notch in the bedpost. Gilley provides the comic relief when he is attack by ghosts and pursue every good looking male in sight. I hope M.J....more

I’m a fan Victoria Laurie’s Abby Cooper – Psychic Eye mysteries so thought I’d give this series a try. I like these books, they are written with her usual sense of humor and goofy outlook. M.J. is a straight shooting, no nonsense kind of gal who gets herself into and out of trouble everywhere she goes. She surrounds herself with other likable characters that do enough silly/stupid things to keep the plot moving in some unexpected ways. Overall nice reads but necessarily her best reads.

Part of a series about a professional medium who works as a ghost buster with her best friend Gil. The premise is interesting, and M. J.'s interactions with ghosts is fascinating, mostly because the author is also a professional medium and ostensibly speaks from experience. The mystery was decent enough, but the characters are one-dimensional and the writing occasionally made me cringe. Recommended if you love ghost stories and need a feather-light read.

Picked this one up at the library. It was the second book in a series so I had a bit of catch up to do. However, Laurie did a good job giving enough backstory to pick up on the gist pretty quickly - which was tam of ghost busters, love interest partner, new case via best friend/socialite. This book was a quick read, but often too descriptive. Perhaps it was a quick read for me because I kept skimming over large parts of description. Interesting premise...

This is an awesome book if you like a good mystery/suspense/thriller/supernatural story. It follows protagonist M.J. Holiday and her colleagues Gilley and steven in teir ghostbusting business. M.J. is called on job by her best friend on a business in which her neice's school is haunted by a sinister demon named Hatchet Jack. The Malicios polterigiest terrorizes the kids in the school as well as M.J. and her friends.

Teeko (as in T.K.O. or total knockout), ghost hunter M.J. Holliday's best friend, hires the Scooby Gang to investigate a supernatural attack on her beloved niece at the girl's boarding school. M.J. and crew depart Boston for Northelm Boarding School, just outside Lake Placid, NY, where they take on their most vicious poltergeist yet. As you can well imagine, the administrators of this $40k+/year boarding school are not keen to have word get out that an entity known as "Hatchet Jack" has been bel...more

Second in the series, and it was still pretty good. We do, indeed, get to see more of the doctor (not nearly enough, but still more), and the mystery was entertaining. I still get the feeling these books are like Sweet Valley High meets, idk, the illegitemate child of Sookie Stackhouse and Rachel Morgan. But don't let that stop you reading the book. I recommend it, just not as highly as some other books I've read lately.

I'm really enjoying reading this new fun series.

Hatchet Jack actually creeped me out in this book, and some of his scenes were definitely a bit spooky.

I like that the "relationship" between M.J. and Steven has been pushed to the back burner for now, since I could really care less about it. I'm not reading this for romance, I'm reading this for the ghost mysteries!

Also, is it weird that my favorite character is a parrot?
Yodamom
The Ghost busting team goes into the woods to hunt a very nasty ghost with a taste for young boys and terror. Steven has joined the team bringing a new look on the hunt process and a soul searching of feelings involved. Things get dangerous and the relationship gets heated. Doc the parrot is full of great snarky comments at all the wrong times. A great fun mystery, I found myself laughing out-loud several times.

A kerfuffle quite a long time ago, but appalling behaviour is timeless.

This was a quick read of Laurie's second in her Ghost Hunter Mysteries. I really like her main characters MJ and Gilley. MJ is a medium and her business partner Gilley is afraid of ghosts. It makes for great interactions. Hatchet Jack, the ghost in this adventure is pretty creepy and his story as its told even creepier. I'll look forward to the next book in this series.
Laura
Teeko comes to MJ and asks for help after Teeko's niece was attacked by a ghost, Hatchet Jack. MJ, Gilly and Steven go to the boarding school where the event happened and try to figure out who the ghost is. This is Book 2 in the Ghost Hunter Mystery series. I liked it better than the first book. I really like MJ and Gilly and hope to read the 3rd book.
