This book was awfully frustrating to me, at points I was so in love and then I would find myself getting equally pissed off. This book was awfully frustrating to me, at points I was so in love and then I would find myself getting equally pissed off. The subject matter was serious, how is one able to trust again after being cheated on, and can you come to care for the person who was the one your boyfriend was cheating with. Some reader might be appalled at the way both our main characters were quick to jump into bed, I on the other hand found it kind of refreshing, it sort of like sticking it to the man. They both made a sad situation very sexy.

The story begins with Zach in a bar meeting with his boyfriend, he is all happy because he knows its going to be a goodnight. All of a sudden a stranger interrupts and confronts Zach, seems his boyfriend doesn’t only belong to him. Well they both get rid of the cheating bastard who goes by the name of Jake, well Zach is feeling guilty and he decides to explain that he had no idea Jake was seeing someone else. He introduces himself and finds out the name of the other man, Nathan has been with Jake for four years, and that is like a knife to Zach’s chest. With the intent to talk things over, Zach invites Nathan to have a beer, with the betrayal fresh they decide to get back at Jake, with hot sex.

From there things become all sorts of complicated, when a one night stand between two guys who had been hurt by one man, turns to something more. The hooking up part was easy, it’s the feeling that start to happen that makes things hard. Told in first person we experience everything Zach is feeling, his doubts, happiness and his growing feelings for Nathan. From the very first scene between Nathan and Zach we get the idea, that Zach will fall hard. That one hook up leads to many nights together, and it is all about sex, the relationship was built off someone else’s deceit and trust is a hard thing come by especially on Nathan’s side of things. Not the best way to build a relationship, and trying to make things work overshadows every aspect of the book.

The characters are likeable, but that all depends on the connection the reader will have with the book. Nathan’s worries became annoying, yet it is understandable the reasons behind his paranoia, he has been cheated on by someone he loved, and he happens to be in a relationship with the person, who was the other man. Very likely there would be lots of confusion. I found their inability to talk really had me grinding my teeth. It’s like they know a conversation is needed but they avoid it for a few hours of hot sex, and then they have days of worries.

Overall it was an aright read for me, the premise had potential but the constant bickering between Zach and Nathan really irked me, and at the end there was never any solutions. They at some point expressed themselves but never to the fullest, a whole lot needed to be said and it just never happened. The ending was just that, an ending, I am still feeling incomplete. I don’t know if this was done purposely, for maybe a sequel I just personally needed a little more. Once again this book is one of those that might be perceived differently from every reader, you have to call this one on your own. I just could not wrap my mind around Zach and Nathan, I liked them but they annoyed me more than anything. I will say this I did like the writing style, and there was some really sexy scenes, to be expected cus all they did was have sex. I am intrigued enough, to go and check out the author's other works.

I couldn't finish it. I'm all about tension in stories. I love the build up and the anger that lead to emotional sex or passionate love. I didn't get it here. It would appear that hot sex just solved everything for everyone.

I've not read a contemporary M/M in quite a while, but I'm so very glad I took the time to read this one. Witt takes a highly unorthodox track with this one (which is what attracted me to it), and I found immense enjoyment in every twist and turn.

This is far from a simple "boy meets boy" story, and Witt's highly unorthodox twist to the way they meet is what kept me reading straight through to the last page.

The first night together, the same night when Nathan tells Zach about Jake, it’s all about sex; and why not, even if a cheater, Jake was pretty good in bed, and Zach doesn’t see any wrong in having indeed his night of sex, even if the once to give it to him is not the same man. I like this side of the story, even Zach finds out that Jake is a liar; he doesn’t let it “contaminate” all the other memories he has of the man. Jake was indeed a good lover, and a good boyfriend, problem is he was not exclusive. And on the other side, if he was so bad, the reader should have questioned how it was possible for him to lure two fine men like Zach and Nathan… if an ex is pretty bad, well, you have to question also the other side of the apple. So no, the author doesn’t try to describe him as a total loser, only a cheater and a liar.

Anyway he is soon forgotten when Zach has his test taste of Nathan: he is way better suited for him than Jake, he even likes his cats, who apparently rule over the house. In the first three meetings they have, Zach and Nathan apparently have problem to take the hands off each other, and the sex is plenty, good and hot. The rage both of them had the first night soon dissipated, but the sex remains hot. Not Zach or Nathan have problem to admit they are plenty of compatible in bed, and that they like sex; the problem is when their relationship can’t be only about sex: date after date they need to do something else beside searching for the nearest flat surface, and then the trust issue appears: how can Nathan trusts Zach, when he was the man who stole him his boyfriend? Let alone that Jake was not the first bad experience Nathan had in love.

There is the possibility to read Nathan also in a different way, like being a bit insecure and maybe giving to Jake a reason to not being faithful; please now don’t misunderstand what I’m saying, I’m not trying to find an excuse to what Jake did, it was wrong, and the author gave us also other reasons to dislike Jake, but maybe he was not the right man for Nathan. Jake was not able to inspire trust in Nathan, and indeed Nathan was right in not trusting him, but I think that he really never begun with.

While with Nathan, Jake had a relationship, even if faulted and fated from the beginning, with Zach I think he had more a fling, a mutual exchange relationship of sort: Zach likes sex, Jake is good at it, equal they have something; I don’t think Zach really cared a lot of Jake, and for this reason he was able to forget it almost immediately. For Zach there is not the problem to mistake Nathan for true love when instead he is a rebounding, since Zach has never to rebound.

The story starts with Zach and his then boyfriend Jake out at a bar. All of a sudden their cozy party is interrupted by an angry Nathan who claims Jake is his boyfriend of four years. Disgusted and upset, both Zach and Nathan leave only to hook up later that night out of anger and a way to get back at Jake. Except neither Zach or Nathan can really forget that night and eventually they start dating. Unfortunately Nathan has some serious trust issues and Zach is wondering when the fling with Nathan turned serious and how he feels about that.

Told from Zach’s first person point of view, the plot is mostly character driven. This is a look at a relationship with unusual beginnings that may doom the entire thing. The conflict comes from Nathan’s trust issues and fear of being cheated on again clashes with Zach’s frustration at not being trusted. Compounding the issue is the joint ex Jake who tries to break the two up with some obvious manipulations. This doesn’t really do much to the couple except show over and over again how little trust the two have between them. This issue of trust is central and not very well dealt with. Nathan doesn’t trust anyone and he’s open about it. Zach has never done anything not to be trusted and thus doesn’t want to defend himself for others’ actions.

Both characters are sympathetic since they have good arguments. It’s understandable that Nathan wouldn’t get over being cheated on by two serious boyfriends back to back very easily. He’s open about this trust issues and claims he’s working on them. Zach is sympathetic, up to a point and then is frustrated. Part of where the book fails for me is right here since I understood both sides of the argument and really felt that they simply weren’t suited to each other. Zach runs out of sympathy pretty quickly and almost demands Nathan’s trust based on trust during sex. Nathan repeatedly questions Zach, even after recognizing his own issues, and can’t stop fearing the worst.

The two characters are decently developed but they just aren’t suited. I found Zach not very sympathetic and relied too much on sex as a fix. They two have numerous sex scenes and in fact the book is actually erotica with some emotional scenes thrown in since the sex is the resolution. The two fight – mildly – then have sex. No resolution and the issue comes up again and again. Zach tries to force trust through sex, which while a decent erotic scene, has nothing to do with Nathan’s emotional issues. So Nathan can bottom, why does that mean Zach won’t cheat on him? This kind of leap in logic slows the pace for me since the story turns into a vehicle for a lot of sex with weak resolution. The final resolution is perhaps the weakest of the entire story since there is no better understanding between the men and they seem to agree to drop it and get over it, just like that.

I found Nathan a more sympathetic character simply because he seems to be trying hard to be honest and upfront with his issues. While I can understand why Zach gets frustrated and fed up with Nathan’s suspicion, Zach seems unsympathetic and quick to expect trust. Ultimately the two feel really ill-suited to each other and I kept agreeing with them when they said perhaps they shouldn’t be together. But really that’s going to vary reader to reader. Some are likely to side with either Nathan or Zach more and likely be frustrated while the reader that can understand and sympathize with both is going to be more successful with the story. It was ok for me but I wanted to throw it at the end since they didn’t work as a couple for me. Try and see for yourself.

I originally chose this because I share the surname with the author. And I'm gay. I am always on the lookout for intelligent gay fiction and, unfortunately, this didn't quite fit the bill.

Warning me that even the most attractive partner can turn into a pathologically jealous and needy person, and that nothing, nothing I do will ever make him trust me because his ex cheated on him? Okay, so his ex is also my ex (that was the good part of the book) but as a romance with a (supposedly) HFN, Nathan's behavior was way too much for me to believe in an HEA with a guy like him.

I also couldn't help wishing the author allowed these two guys to actually converse with each other. It's not until the last few pages of the book that Zach gets to complete a few sentences. Nathan doesn't even get to finish a line through much of the book, I'd say. Their dialogue throughout 90% of the book consists of, "Oh God...", "Oh, please...", "God, no, Please don't --", "Fuck, please...". This isn't just Nathan, it's both of them.

Written in 1st person POV, I did get a very good sense of Zach and I liked him very much. Respect was added to that when he finally told Nathan he wasn't putting up with his crap anymore - the checking up on him, the questioning etc. I couldn't help wishing Zach would find someone worthy of him. Maybe even Dylan, his business partner (who is straight but in my mental re-write, I turned him into a GFY character).

There's also the constant internal monologue going on with Zach but nothing for Nathan so it was very unbalanced in that sense as well as a huge disfavor to Nathan. With nothing to help me feel his pain due to what happened in his previous relationships, there was no way for me to be sympathetic when time and time again, he believes Zach is fooling around on him.

As I said, I was enjoying this very much at the start and Nathan turning out the way he does,, was an awful, awful surprise. In the end, the HFN was not at all convincing for me and I was left strongly believing Zach made a very big mistake.(less)

This started off good with an interesting premise. Can two people who are both cheated on by the same guy, find happiness together. It took me 80 pages to get into the story. I'm not sure what my disconnect was, but I just didn't care. It could be because the first half of the story was sex scenes. God this is sad. The way Nathan treats Zach is heart breaking for me. This book is a 3.5 star. Since I truncate...3 star. The premise of this story was rather interesting. I can't remember the last time I read a story where two partners who were cheated on came together in this manner. Sure there is the revenge sex but this one was more than revenge sex. I don't know what was going on with Jack, but he's a jack-ass.

3.5 stars! I was very annoyed with this book in the end. It started out great. I was really enjoying it, yeah the whole "I am suspicious of you all the time" was getting a little old, but perhaps understandable given the circumstances of their relationship. This book had some good things going for it. First, the premise sounds interesting. I'm sure there has to be another like it, but I haven't read it. I was so frustrated when I finished this book. I totally loved the story. Everything about the story. From the jerk ex-boyfriend to watching Nathan and Zach work through their trust issues. Though I did find Nathan to be a little on the overbearing side when it came to trust. Everything flowed smoothly. Great concept for a story. So what happened? The ending was so freaking rushed! I actually loved how this book started. It was something I haven't seen before and I didn't see it coming. I try not to read many reviews before starting a book so I was totally in it with Zach in that bar. However, by the end of the book I just felt worn down. Can you ever get sweet water from a poisoned well?

Seriously, how do you find purity when you started with something tainted. Mistrust and betrayal, two demons of relationship hound Nathan and Zach. Due to an inauspicious start the entire journey is uphill with a lot of sliding backwards on unstable ground. At some point they have to find firm footing for their feelings or this is going to fail.

I've never read anything by L.A. Witt before, but after reading this wonderful story, I definitely plan on checking to see what else the author has written.

As I said, the beginning is great: Zach, the narrator, is on a date with his boyfriend, when another guy, Nathan, sits at his table and accuses him of having stolen his man. The two realize they have been played and walk out together, ending in bed and having a hot session of rebound sex. That night remains in their memory and after a while the two men meet again.

Their no-strings-attached relationship has a couple of issues. It began because of the cheating boyfriend, so both men know that this is a weak foundation for any rapport, while their feelings day by day turn to something more than just sex. Nathan has trust issues and his jealousy - paired with some scheming from their previous common boyfriend - is a wrench thrown in the way of their blossoming love. The problem is that whenever the guys make a step forward, they immediately take two steps back, so I had the sensation I wasn't going nowhere. I like plots when the situations resemble everyday life, but I am afraid this book was maybe a 20% too long and the everyday life became a bit boring.

It's a pity, because when the author, in the chapter before the last, made the characters tackle the real issue in their relationship, the whole situation, the way the characters reacted, the words they said, the way Zach expressed his intimate feelings and recognized what was going on in Nathan's head, everything was so incredibly real that it moved me. The writing became amazingly perfect and to the point.

It was a frustrating read in certain points, but it also had great highlights. If you like contemporary romance with no mystery or strange frills, this is good.(less)

I do so love L.A. Witt! I love an angst riddled story and this one suited my needs just fine. It had lots of angst and frustration that ends with you clasping your hand to your chest and breathing a sigh with a big sappy smile. I've placed it right up there on my favorites shelf.

This was my first book by L.A. Witt, but certainly not the last one. I truly enjoyed its originality; the plot was new and fresh, and it kept my interest until the very last page. On the minus side, I had to skip a lot of pages due to the fact that the sex scenes were way too long for my liking. Add the anticipation of the sex in between of those, and it leaves very few for the development of the characters and the storyline.

I almost didn't read this book after reading some of the reviews, but I'm so glad I did. For me, it was everything I want in a story. The characters were great, the story was interesting, I really loved the complexity of finding love/starting a relationship with someone who was the other man. I felt the amazing chemistry between these two and it made for some hot scenes.

I enjoyed this book. It was a fairly simple and straightforward storyline with no major twists or turns, but lots of steamy, sometimes angry, sex. I have read other books in which this author collaborated with others, but never one written by her alone. I liked her writing and her writing style very much. My chief complaint is that I was let down by the ending. It just felt very abrupt after investing myself in these characters...I needed more. 3.5 stars

Let me say first that I normally like LA Witt's books but this one was a disappointment. There really wasn't much of a story here. The book needed more conflict than just a lack of trust between Zach and Nathan. But what really bothered me was the overuse of the expression "he broke the kiss." I swear that expression was used in every chapter of this book and it bugged the hell out of me. To quote part of the review of another reader (Elisa Ramblings) "Nine-tenths of the Law is for sure an erotic gay romance, plenty of hot sex and two men who enjoy doing it, but it has the merit to not being “only” that".

I've really appreciated how the author was able to make this story something else than just hot sex between two hot guys...very few books I read in this genre managed to mantain this equilibrium.
