Disappointing romance with too many improbabilities and too many historical goofs.

In the introduction, Ms Enoch notes that this was her debut novel and it still holds a special place in her heart. That's as may be, but whether it's her first or her fifth, the weaknesses remain.

Women-dressed-as-boys has become a tired, cliched HR narrative device. Perhaps it fits in with the stock ugly-duckling theme, in which a commoner with no hope of marrying an aristocrat turns out to be a blue-blood. In this...more

If you like heroines who leave their heroes (who are fairly formidable in their own right) in the dust scratching their heads, then you're going to love Kit. She's bold yet not annoyingly so, incredibly likeable but not cloyingly charming, and a healthy mixture of childlike enthusiasm and grown cunning. She isn't perfect but is quite willing to see the brighter (and more profitable side) of things as they come, and that's why we like her so much. Also because she knows how to fleece people of th...more

More like 3.5 stars..rounded up.

This is my first Suzanne Enoch novel and I came to learn that this was also her debut novel. I’m happy to report that I greatly enjoyed it and if the reviews of her other books are correct I know that I will only enjoy her books all the more.

This book is a mix of romance, mystery, adventure, and comedy. Miss Enoch put a lot into this book however there were moments in the middle where it felt like nothing much was happening. I couldn’t understand why it felt like...more

When a wayward boy lands on his doorstep Alexander Cale, Earl of Everton, only thinks it's to pay a debt owned. But when he finds out the lad is a young woman Christine (Kit) Brantley he feels drawn to her, but when he finds out she's a spy, he'll do anything in his power in order to protect her, if she let's him of course!

A fun, action packed read, with Suzanne Enoch writing a new twist on an old tale.

I was supposed to read The Rake first before Lady Rogue and I was kinda hanged up on the The Rake's plot that I thought it was the plot for the Lady Rogue but then it was different and I continued to read and it got me really intrigued. Kit is a girl who always disguises as a boy for her and her father's safety until they came across Lord Everton/Alexander whom she falls in love with.

I'm kinda frustrated about Kit's decisions on why she can't fall in love with Alex but she falls in love with him...more

I guess every author has a "miss" every now and again. I think this was only the 3rd book that Suzanne Enoch ever published. The concept of a young lady posing as a boy to help her father spy on an earl...I think in the back of my mind, I thought it was clever, but I found reading it uncomfortable. I didn't like imagining Kit in menswear throughout almost the entire book. Part of the reason I'm attracted to historical novels is because I enjoy imagining the ladies' grace, restraint (publicly, an...more

This is what a crossdressing heroine should be. *glares meaningfully at Surprising Lord Jack* Well, except for the whole giving up her crossdressing ways to become a countess. That part kind of stinks.

Kit was amazing. I loved her. Everton was okay too, except for constantly referring to Kit as "chit." WTF? Worst endearment ever.

I loved that this book had a non-romantic plot. I love spies and that element of danger that most Regencies lack. I just really like this book. It's swell.

Alexander Cale, the Earl of Everton, is working for the government trying to stop smugglers from funding Napoleon's armies. Christine (Kit) Brantley is brought to Alex's house as part of a scheme by Stewart Brantley. Kit's father dresses her as a male and leaves her for Alex to show around town. She is to spy on Alex at the same time. Alex quickly realizes his attraction for Kit but hides it until he realizes Kit is a "she." Then things become quite complicated with who is spying on whom. Enoch...more

This is really a 3 1/2, but I'm rating it 4 stars out of necessity. This is not a bad book.

+1 genderbender/crossdressing - female lead gets to chill with the big boys (clubs and drinking, etc)
+1 witty dialogue with sexy beast hero
+1 heroes bffs banter (and delusional Reg)
-1 Spy romance bs
-1 random French phrases (disturbingly simply)
-1 underdeveloped villains (and the father, I don't even understand him)
+.5 overall enjoyment - it was actually kinda fun to read, despite the lameness

See, 3 1/2 per...more

Yet another cheesy romance novel about a lady spy! Is the world of cheesy romance trying to tell me something?? Except in this one, the girl is dressed up as a boy.

As a favor to Kit's father, Alex takes Kit in, where Kit is supposed to spy on Alex (England is at war against Bonaparte); Alex quickly discovers that Kit is really a woman, and their love for each other simmers, then explodes in a flame of passionate... well, you know. And did I mention that she maks a grand appearance at a masquerad...more

I liked this book. Both hero and heroine were likable, and often had me laughing out loud. I also liked seeing the regency world from another - male - perspective. It was quite refreshing. What bothered me, anyway, was that the hero saw through Kit's disguise almost at once, while everybody else in London just believed that she was a boy. Yeah, right.
Anyway, this book is worth the money and the time it takes to read it.

A thought--why don't men dress like women in these novels?

Enjoyed this! Had just finished reading 'Private Arrangements' which I couldn't get in to so this was a very welcome surprise. I didn't have to wait for 5 chapters before the male lead realised he was a she dressed up as a young boy. The dialogue is witty and the tension good. One thing - he was very casual about his mistress, introducing her to Kit. Guess it wasn't his fault, he wasn't to know Kit and her Da were turning up in the middle of the night asking for a debt to be repaid. Still...

This is one of the best Regency romances I've read in a while. Although the plot isn't all that new, Enoch keeps the story interesting with her vivid characters. The romance is sweet, the writing is good, and the heroine is so much fun to read! I truly didn't want the book to end. Highly recommended!

I still cannot believe this is Suazzane Enoch's first novel. I loved the banters between Alex and Kit. Yes, the theme is old, but that doesn't mean it was boring. Rather she brought out the same old thing, in a very different way. I absolutely loved the dialogues.

Blah! This book was almost good. I had to skim over the last couple chapters because the end was dragged out mercilessly. I enjoyed most of the story until it flopped. Plus Kit was the worst spy ever! And it was a tad queer that she pretended to be a man for 14 years.

very entertaining! although i was a little bit of impartial to Kit's being such a stubborn boy[and girl at the same time], i kind of like it how Alex tolerated her...i really like this book! i'll have Suzanne Enoch enlisted as one of my favorite Authors!

For some reason I love this book. It's been a favorite of mine for years. I'd say I first read it when I was about 16. I re-read it today. I love it.

Doesn't this book just look and sound lame? I got it because I like gender-benders almost as much as long walks on the beach (meaning I've never done it but never tire of hearing about it as it always makes me giggle one way or another)

Anywho, the book was great. The wit wasn't forced, the story was solid, the characters weren't annoying. This is rare in romance novels.
Kathy
Hard to rate this one. It really had me for about 2/3 of the way and then everything fell apart for me. ok, there was some action and rescuing and bad guys but it was all a mish mosh after awhile. Really 3.5. Or maybe a 3. Def not a 5. Whatever.
Sally
A bit cheesy and lots of done to death tropes but Kit was a nice heroine and it was a nice light read.

Suzanne was born in Southern California sometime in the latter half of the 20th century. In the way that some people are born knowing they want to be astronauts or cellists, Suzanne always knew she wanted to be a writer. Early dreams of becoming a zoologist and writing true stories about her adventures in Africa were crushed, however, after she viewed a television special about the world’s most po...more

“Reg: Speaking of blunt, dinner is on my bill tonight, mes amis.
Alex: What's the occasion?
Augustus: Lady Caroline's agreed to venture out on a picnic with out intrepid hero.
Kit: I don't know why you keep insisting she's smitten with me. I've barely spoken five sentences to her.
Augustus: It's very simple. Reg has thrown his entire being into pleasing Caroline. She knows every nuance of his thought and character. You, however, are a mystery to be explored, solved, and resolved.”
