The latest installment in Sherrilyn Kenyon's The League series is definitely a mixed bag. Let me start with what I liked about it. Caillen's story takes us back to the original cast of characters featured in Born of Night and Born of Fire. We had jumped ahead in time for a while to focus on the next generation of the core families for Born of Ice. But this story is set 2-3 years after the events in Born of Fire. I'm happy about this. I thought there were plenty of great characters in the ori More...

I had the amazing experience of going to Sherrilyn Kenyon's book signing and she is just a lovely lovely woman! And so easy to talk to!
So in this review, I thought a little photo of the two of us might be fun :) Also, Dianna Love was there, and that woman is hysterical! She had us all cracking up.

So, moving on to the [Spoiler Free] review.

Born of Shadows picks up in the same time as the first two books took place- Born of Night and Born of Fire which I More...

I loved this book. I know that many people have been a bit disappointed by it, but I definitely was not. I know one of the biggest problems was The Darling Thing and I will touch on that later, but other than that, I personally don't see why it was so disappointing. Sure, there was less sex in this book and it was a little different from the others in the series, but I didn't feel like those were any reasons to be dissatisfied with it.

I really loved Caillen and Desideria. Up un More...

I feel like I should be bothered by the fact that the same thing happens to the main characters in most of the books in the series:
Man and woman either have someone after them or are framed with some form of illegal act and the rest of the story is spent trying to clear their name or names. Evil family members are involved with the plot to kill them or frame them, or both, all because they're jealous of something the other has or something the are or aren't.
Meh!
Who cares, right? A More...

The League is by far my favourite series by Sherrilyn Kenyon, her blend of sci-fi, adventure and romance makes my jelly quiver!

This is the fourth book in the League series and it follows Caillen Dagan, the brother of Shahara the heroines of Born of Fire. Caillen is a third generation smuggler who would do anything for his sisters, no matter how crazy they drive him, including die for them which is what he almost does until he saved in the knick of time by an unl More...

While I enjoyed this book it wasn't as good as the rest. Many reasons for this which I'll explain later, just wanted to say that I'm a bit disappointed about the book. After I finished book 3 I was extremely happy to see book 4 would be about one of the original characters as I adored them all and I had been hoping more books about them would come out. But this book wasn't the same as the rest, it was even written in a different way; which was not a good thing as I believe More...

I'm just gonna get right into it.

Desi... Deside... Fuck, how's it spelt? Desideria?
You were so badass in the beginning. Kicking butt left, right and centre. And then you met Caillen. Admittedly, no matter how badass one may be, your badass-ness will pale in comparison to his. But still, you didn't have to get all... you know. Pansy.

BUT THEN, you sorted it out and got awesome again. Saved Caillen's life on a number of occasions. Good girl.

Read this a few days ago and some of the details have already floated away from me. There were some parts in the book that seemed choppy.

I think the synopsis should be written differently. By the time Desideria even meets Caillen, which is some 50+ pages into the book, he's not considered a convict anymore because of his father. I don't understand how Caillen got let go from his 'crime' so easily, even though his father is the ruler of that planet. While marooned on an Andarion plan More...

The latest series coming to the reader called "The League" by Sherrilyn Kenyon has just launched the 4th book called Born of Shadows, and is one of the best books I have read in a long time! This was the first book I've read in the series, and cannot wait to read the other books as I could not put this book down from the first paragraph. I love the fact that book not only stands alone by itself, but is part of a series that I can now immerse myself into for the next few weeks!

Strangely enough, this is the first time I started on a book without checking up whether it's the first book in a series or not. But I was glad in a way it wasn't those type of series where the precedent is continued on.

Firstly, this book left some bad impression on me. Towards the end, I just couldn't understand what happened to the author. It's like she couldn't kill the characters, and she put up a lame cover-up story which was exactly what I thought when a certain event happened, a More...

Let me begin with the opening sentences of this book so then you'll better understand why I'm giving my first ( I think) less than 4 star rating to a book by Kenyon.

"Watch out!" (yes great first line. Hooks and all that stuff. Awesome. But wait...)

"Caillen Dagan barely got out of the way before three blaster shots whizzed past his head. His heart thumped wildly as he realized he and his father were trapped by what they assumed were loaners out to collect mo More...

Fourth in the League science-fiction romance series about an entire universe of plotting planets and governments with its corrupt League against the plucky group of pirates, smugglers, bounty hunters…well, you get the picture.

The Story
In Born of Shadows, the core group of characters flies out in support of Caillen Dagan. Believing himself to be a no-account smuggler, Caillen is caught at last when he substitutes his name for his sister's when she's about to be caught smuggling a h More...

I actually had my doubts about this book just from reading the jacket copy, but we’ve all read books whose jacket copy wasn’t a good fit with the actual contents. Plus, I’ve seen this author’s name before, it was a library book, and I was in the mood to try something new.

And I’m glad I didn’t waste any of my own money on it. I do enjoy a good space opera, but this isn’t one.

It features characters built out of quirks, stereotypes, and angst; a plot full of more coincidences More...

Oh my god. This book was slightly better than than Books 2 and 3, but these books are just extremely repetitive in character development and description.

ALL of the male characters have some kind of tragic past, which usually ends up being several times more tragic than the female character. I usually wouldn't have a problem with this, but honestly? A tragic past isn't necessary for a character to be "good" or "attractive".

All the female character tend More...

Actually 4.5

Caillen Dagen, a smuggler, has spent much of his life looking out for his three sisters, but this time one of his sisters gets him into a real mess. Desideria, daughter to a queen and a member of her guard, seeks to prove herself to her mother but is hampered by prejudice against her mixed heritage. These two meet up after an attempted assassination throws them together, and the sparks fly-- literally and figuratively.

Ms. Kenyon continues her league series, whic More...

Kenyon’s League Series has always been my favorite of her various series. I love futuristic sci fi and that is what this series is. This book takes place a few years after Born of Fire but many years before Born of Ice. I recommend reading this series in order, if not at least read Born of Night and Born of Fire before this one. Readers are introduced to Caillen Dagan in those books and also the supporting characters in this book. This book starts with fight action and the action never stops. Th More...

Born of Shadows by Sherrilyn Kenyon is romance and science fiction novel due to be released April 25 2011. It is the fifth installment in Kenyon's ongoing League series. This series is comprised of novels set in one universe with related characters, but each novel can stand on its own. If you have yet to read a League novel, do not be afraid of picking this one up, it will show you what Kenyon can do and inspire you to go back and find the others. I don't know why I seem to like these books so much. I'm not a huge romance reader, I initially started reading Kenyon and other PNR authors when I ran out of urban fantasy I wanted something, anything that was remotely related. Also, as a bookstore employee watching her books fly off the shelf, I wanted to see what the fuss was about. (I started with the Laurell K. Hamilton books somewhere around my freshman year of high school when there was almost nothing else in the genre)

This book takes a step back in time from the third League book to the original group of Kick-butt heroes of the first two books. Caillen Dagan (Cai), you may remember from Born of Fire, is Shahara's brother and Syn (now his brother-in-law) is one of his best friends. This is Cai's story.

Twenty-two years ago Cai Dagan's father died protecting him and his sisters. He was warned never to join the League, to never let anyone take his DNA, a retina scan, or fingerprints, never give his a More...

Non stop action, intrigue, danger and a sweet romance. A race for their lives and those they love have two fighting to survive. Lie's, deceit, and mysteries surround their family histories. Revelations tear their beliefs apart. This story never slows down, just when you think the worst has been done, it gets worse. Romance sweetens the story and has you cheering for a difficult relationship. It follows two people that have lost the little they thought they had only to realize they did not have More...

This fourth instalment of the League series was centred on Caillen (Cai) Dagan, the adopted brother of Shahara Dagan whom we met in book #2. This book was the love story for Caillen and Desideria, who happened to be a warrior princess for the Qillaqs, a civilization which was known for their feminist domination.

There were so many things that went wrong with this book that I didn’t even know where I should begin my ranting. Let me pick on the easiest target first... Caillen!

*meh* This one felt forced. The League is an older series being republished, but this is a new installment to an old, finished series. Felt like extra money for the publisher and author to me. Granted, I've always like the Dark Hunters better, but this wasn't even up to par w/ the previous League books. Caillen is a wanted outlaw about to be executed, when *whoops* he's special. And all is forgiven - just like real life, right ; ) Then he sees the hot chick from across the room, who also S More...

This was definitely not my favorite in the series. I enjoyed the overall story, but it just seemed like each time you thought the plot was resolved, it morphed into something totally different. While I do like to be surprised by the direction a story takes, this just felt too forced. It was as if Kenyon was trying to shove several stories into one long one. Normally when I read Kenyon's books (the Dark-Hunter series is my favorite of all time), I feel as if I can't put the book down, and I'm More...

I think this has to be my favorite of the series so far. I've always liked Caillen when he's mentioned in the other books. He's been the one I wanted a story on, and I was not disappointed at all with his back story. You can see why he's a badass but can be vulnerable underneath. I really like how Kenyon gives her guys a lot of depth and doesn't make them on extreme or the other. I also have to say that I really like how she writes her women. So far in the series, minus the heroine in Nyk's book More...
