The God who saves is also a God who woos His own to a relationship primarily of the heart. As we draw closer to Him, we must choose to let go of other "less-wild lovers," such as perfectionistic driveness and self-indulgence. Eldredge and Curtis identify the lies offered by "false loves" and instruct us on the journey back to the Lover of our souls. In c...more

About eighteen months ago, my mom handed me this little book and told me her book club was reading it. She thought I might like it. That little book was Epic by John Eldredge, and I more than liked it – the book fundamentally shifted the way I see my faith. And it made me want to read everything Eldredge has ever written.

One of the fundamental ideas in Eldredge’s writing is that humans were made for more than the mundane and drab; instead, we were made for joy and gloriousness and be...more

I have mixed feelings about this book. I had shied away from it for quite some time because I was convinced by the title that there was going to definitely be some "I'm the princess, God's my knight in shining armor"/Julian of Norwich (am I thinking of the right religious figure?) "No, I reeeeally love God" weirdness in there. There was a slight bit of that, but I think more than anything, the book was about emotional healing. It framed our lives in terms of the Romance (beau...more

Good book! Enjoyed reading the perspective of our relationship with God as The Sacred Romance. Curtis & Eldredge do a great job describing our lives as a Romance of a greater story and the Arrows from the adversary attacking our hearts and that intimacy with God.

"The story that is the Sacred Romance begins not with God alone, the Author at his desk, but God in relationship, intimacy beyond our wildest imagination, heroic intimacy. The Trinity is at the center of the universe; p...more

There is only One Being who can satisfy the last aching abyss of the human heart and that if the Lord Jesus Christ. Our earthly Fathers although human and imperfect were wired to be for us, their children, the face of God. Unconditional love! Many have fallen short and we continue to seek that acceptance, the grace of being a child of God. Yet we seek that love in so many unhealthy ways. If only we were to spend just a few minutes each day seeking His heart- our seeking, our thirst and hung...more

this book has "first book syndrome" i think. sometimes when an author writes their first book it's either the best thing they'll ever write or a very amateur attempt at writing. i think this is the latter.

it has some very poignant ideas and valid points, but after you get to the third chapter, you've read the whole book. not to mention that John Eldredge repeats many of these themes in many of his other books. and the incessant quotes became really tedious to read. it's alm...more

i've read this at least twice and reading again. it's SO good for self-discovery (wounds you have received, lies you have believed all your life, and your truest self that is always wanting more) and in the midst of all of that, God discovery - his nature and character alive and within us.
"Indeed, if we will listen, a Sacred Romance calls to us through our heart every moment of our lives. It whispers to us on the wind, invites us through the laughter of good friends, reaches out to...more

I could completely relate to this book. We all have pain and deep wounds that Only God can heal. And the closer we get to God the more healing and cleansing we will get. I've always struggled to accept God's unconditional love. I want His love more then anything and I want to be walking in complete freedom and I know sometimes it takes time and we often have to take baby steps but God will take the baby steps of faith and grow them in our lives. This is must read!! It greatly blessed me!

09/23/11 about halfway through. thought this book and its premise was a CROCK. Movies and fairy tales as a way to illustrate our relationship to God? What. Ever. Then I got to the chapters 'The Beloved' and 'Legends of the fall' - and suddenly the book got amazing. AMAZING. Not quite as skeptical of Eldredge as I have been in the past. One of the memorable lines: "Jesus invites us to thirst." Authors also quote Son of Laughter, which prompted me to get/read it - enjoyed it too.

This book was special to me during my college years. It gave me new insight into my relationship with God and, I believed, helped me to understand and better empathize with those around me. I was very naive during those days, and unaware of the pain experienced by those around me. I am thankful for friends who shared with me as we read this book together and the special bond that remains.

God speaks to all our hearts. The hard part is to listen to and live from what He has spoken into our hearts in the midst of all the other messages we get from the world. A life not lived from the heart is not worth living. A life lived from the heart will be one of beauty and adventure. Then with the authors "Every day when we rise, we can tell ourselves, 'My journey today will bring me closer to home; it may be just around the courner'."

From this I learned that my 'ask and receive' prayer mentality might have more in common with the religions of Mesopotamia, and that, as CS Lewis said in his Chronicles of Narnia series about God's aspects 'safe, of course he isn't safe!' But to counterbalance, his intentions toward us are good and his love so beyond our understanding that it can only be described as divine.

I finished the book, but am still working on the companion journal. The journal adds A LOT to the effect this book has on the reader. The book is beautifully written while also being relevant. The journal requires commitment and accountability, in my opinion; I felt like I needed someone I trusted to discuss it with as I did it.

It's been several years since I read this book, so I may miss a lot. I recall this book to be a stirring call to enter into a loving relationship with our Father, a Romance of sorts. The author reminds us of the fall and shows us a God that wants to restore the beauty and grandeur of a perfect communion between Himself and us.

This was in my collection. Some really, really good stuff. Although he quotes not so theologically correct people.
Makes you think, like C.S.Lewis' Screwtape Letters. How to draw close to God, what matters, what doesn't. Interactive writing, imagery. Prompted me to reread Pilgrim's Progress, which I did.

This book was monumental in my understanding of the love of God. This book helped me realize that God is not only the ruler of the universe, but also the lover of my soul. Highly recommend to anyone wanting a deeper understanding of the love of God and the pursuit of his bride.

A must read I think. I also did the accompanying workbook and met weekly with a friend as we worked through it. We still talk about what we learned about ourselves, each other, and God as a result of reading this book together. One of my favorite chapters was on heaven.

Just what I needed. It seems to fit with "So You Don't Want to Go to Church Anymore" well. I tried to read it before, but for some reason I could not get myself to finish it. Perhaps, I just wasn't ready. Yet, when there was enough sorrow in my heart, the book indeed hit the point.

Excellent book about the way God uses art, beauty, nature, love, and even terrible suffering to woo His Bride, His children. As a man struggling to "get" the whole Bride of Christ thing, this book spelled it out wonderfully. Thank God for His very personal interest in us.

This book was an epiphany for me. It truly brought home, probably for the first time, the love story of Christ actively pursuing ME...of doing whatever it takes to win me...just like Cinderella. How could I possibly turn away from that deep, unfathomable love?

Wonderful book! So uplifting and inspiring for the Christian journey that we are on. A reminder that this world is not all that there is, we are on a journey to a better place. The longings we often feel are that we were made for more than this. This is a re-read for sure, a continuing reminder to have eternity as my focus in my walk with God.

It's been a long time since I've read this book, but from what I remember, it provides an nice exploration of our soul's desire for something more ... that longing that we have for love, passion, beauty, etc. that only Jesus Christ can fill.

I loved this book. Granted I was on some sort of spititual quest at the time. The book was all about Desire. In my mind that is what religion, spirituality is about. This longing, this inexplicable longing, that you find yourself (if you're human, if you're like me) fulfilling in all the wrong ways. I can't say I remember coming out of this book with any answers, but the shear relief & excitement in hearing someone else describe a critical part of my being, especially a man (who knew they experi...more

This is a good book if you are entering into a phase in your spiritual life that involves new understandings of Christ as Lover. I read this book in college during the time when Captivating & Wild At Heart were all the rage in Christian circles across the nation. To its credit, the authors do have some nuggets of wisdom that a young Christian should have before entering into any sort of romantic relationship.

However, ever the skeptic of Christian inspirational literature, I never foun...more

This book revolutionized my faith and caused me to rethink a lot of things. I discussed the book with two groups of women. We listened to music, watched movies, and journaled through each chapter. In my top 10!

This is a really good book. It will open hearts to how God really thinks of us and how He has been drawing us to Him. He really is "courting" us. I recommend this book for anyone in any season of their walk with God.

I read this book as a devotional when I was in Rome at the end of my junior year of college. It was good. I really enjoyed reading it and the book drew me into wanting more in my relationship with God.

This book really 'spoke' to me when I read it years ago, after a reread, it seems really dated. 'Waking the Dead' is much more to the point than this attempt at stirring the waters.
Michael McCloskey
The God we are in relationship with is not what we expected. He is "wild" as Brent and John put it. Prepare your heart for a poetic and rich journey in considering how God pursues us.

I love John Eldredge and am captivated by his works Wild at Heart and Journey of Desire, but for some reason The Sacred Romance was more challenging for me to read. The Sacred Romance was written before WAH and JOD, and so reading TSR was kind of like having been in fifth grade but then having to go back and repeat third grade. Mostly The Sacred Romance served as my devotional reading over the last year (it took me a long time to get through this book!), and I appreciated it for that. It also...more

Liked it when I read it, but sad to find out that John Eldredge is an open theist, which means he believes God doesn't have a clue what's going to happen in the end - complete heresy.

“The point is the love story. We live in a love story in the midst of war.” 25 people liked it
“One of the most poisonous of all Satan’s whispers is simply, “Things will never change.” That lie kills expectation, trapping our heart forever in the present. To keep desire alive and flourishing, we must renew our vision for what lies ahead. Things will not always be like this. Jesus has promised to “make all things new.” Eye has not seen, ear has not heard all that God has in store for his lovers, which does not mean “we have no clue so don’t even try to imagine,” but rather, you cannot outdream God. Desire is kept alive by imagination, the antidote to resignation. We will need imagination, which is to say, we will need hope. ” 25 people liked it
